There's a local boutique organic pet food store near me that sells proprietary blends of chicken feed for about $1/lb. So right now, it's about a break-even propo$ition now with the eggs we are getting and current pricing, but the food quality of the eggs is demonstrably superior to store-bought eggs where you have no idea about what hormones, pesticides, gmo etc went into them.

Try to use the food grade D.E. It will be white in colour. The brown D.E. is used in swimming pool filters - not great. Apart from that, its a very high protein mix that would be great for moulting birds or for babies. Maybe a little less protien for 'normal' aged girls, just to protect their bones. Too much protein can cause problems. Maybe add some wheat to the mix? It's great that we all experiment and share so that we can come to what is best for each of us. :)

We had 16 at our highest and now we only have 10 layers which is plenty for our small family. Hello Sir. I have 5 chickens and 1 rooster and I use store bought mixed food for them. But i'm wondering if it's possible to only feed them corn and nothing else. Is it good for them or do I need to mix with other foods to? Like oats and etc.
@onceuponatinyfarm
@onceuponatinyfarm Год назад
Corn alone wouldn’t give them enough nutrients or protein, but a mixture of corn, wheat and oats with some sunflower seeds would ensure they get enough protein to lay and stay healthy. Corn has a low percentage of protein but is good for the birds especially in winter to give them enough fats to stay warm.
@PloughmansBackyard
@PloughmansBackyard Год назад
We've found using corn adds so much fat around the organs it really not great for them to consume so much corn. When processing our chickens we seen how corn puts a lot of pressure around the heart etc. love that your making your own feed. We are starting ours, sprouting/soaking using wheat, oats, lentils, and sunflower seeds. Looking into more ingredients to add aswell. Great video though.

Corn is ok, with moderation. I only use cracked corn during winter time, to give them more energy and help during very cold weather. I live in NY state. if not snow on the ground I let them go out of the coop. Between spring and fall they only go in the coop at night and come out on early morning.

A few videos like Justin Rhodes suggested to go to your local FEED STORE, not tractor supply or Amazon. I'll give you an example. 50lbs of oyster shell on Amazon was $50.00. At my local valley feed store, 50lb bag was only $12.99. 50lb bags of other whole grains was only $12-$15 instead of $20-25 at tractor supply or Amazon. Theirs girl that has a video explaining whole grains, Wheat, oats ,corn, black oil sunflower seed and flaxseed . She's getting 22.3% protein. Her channel is Sawyer ridge farms. Thank you

@@stephanies5686 I stopped for a while during the growing season because I didn’t have a time to make a feed when I’m farming. Now I’m back to making my own feed and I just made a new video about it if you want to check that out 👍

Most corn is genetically modified

Yes I no longer make this mix with these specific ingredients. I am currently sourcing my grains from Azure standard to ensure I’m getting all organic and non gmo grains.

Don't you know all corn is gmo? So you add a whole 50lbs of gmo corn trying to avoid gmo. Lol makes sense.

I didn’t realize that when I made this video 3 years ago. I’ve made newer videos where I get all non gmo organic whole grains to make my own feed mix. Here’s a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1Eyu_jQP3AM.html

90% of corn is GMO

True, these days I only get my corn for my animals through Azure standard, I get non gmo organic whole corn for their feed.

Now I get all my corn from Azure standard it’s all organic and non gmo, and corn is something I notice the birds lay much better when I include it in their diet. I’ve tried some corn free organic feeds but they laid way less eggs using those.

Chickens will choke on whole corn
@onceuponatinyfarm
@onceuponatinyfarm Год назад
I think that might be true for baby chicks and younger birds but my full grown hens have been eating whole corn kernels for years now and I’ve never had any problems. 🤷‍♂️ If it’s a concern you could always get the ground corn but from what I’ve read they get more nutrients and oils from the whole kernel. If they have access to enough grit they should have no problem swallowing.

a lot of corn are GMOs. Just sayin'

I know! I’ve actually started using an all organic mix from New Country Organics instead of making my own feed because I’ve come to realize it’s more important to know my birds are eating gmo free and glyphosate free food than just saving a few dollars on cost. Thanks for watching!

@@onceuponatinyfarm I know that you ferment your feed, have you ever tried sprouting?

@@boogerie last year I did a few trays of micro greens like sunflowers and broccoli sprouts and fed them to the birds. I’d like to do more of that this year, do you have any suggestions of good things you can sprout?

buying to much not needed. crazy . if buying from manufacturers, you will always end up with expensive eggs.might as well go to the store and buy your chemical eggs.

I'm so over the non-GMO thing. GMO isn't 100% bad. I guarantee you are eating vegetables that were developed through some sort of genetic modification. I'd be more concerned about using non-food grade DE in their food. The gray stuff is bentonite.

What gets me is seeing ice cream in stores that says "Now made with non-gmo cow milk" or whatever, like they're doing you a favor, and also gives them an excuse to charge more. For years we had no idea those things were bad or that GMOs was in our foods, I think it's about being informed about what is in our food and having the option to choose what's important to you. If it's not important to eat gmo food then don't even look at the ingredients, but for me, I want to know what my chickens are eating and that it represents my values, which are constantly evolving with new information. Thanks for watching.
