Hi everyone! I am so excited to share with you today an incredible and simple diy project. I am going to show you how I made my very own tack trunk!
It was super inexpensive!!!
The total cost for me to make this tack trunk was $75.00!!!! And that was adding custom features, like the padded seat, and the embellishments.
I have always wanted a tack trunk, but could never justify spending at least $400.00 for one. However, when I was walking through Home Depot one day I found this Husky tool box, and I thought it would make a fantastic tack trunk!
If you want to read how I did this step by step, I have the directions on my website Budget Equestrian.
www.budgeteques...
And I am super excited to let you all know something big is coming to my website......
If you have been following my diy projects on RU-vid, I decided to write down all of my projects, and put them into books! You can make everything I do with simple instructions, and lots of step by step photos! I am so excited to share this with you guys!!!! More details on this coming soon!
Subscribe to my channel for LOTS of videos all related to horses, and what it's like to have your horses at your home and all of the different projects you can do to make the most of your time with your horses!

I love the idea of a cushion on top! It would have been cool if the purple fabric with a case that could be slipped on and off to be washed, and the cushion could have velcro the attached to the truck. Just an idea! But all in all, awesome idea!😍

Hi Maggie Schrage :) You are right! That is a fantastic idea! If I make another one, I will have to try it that way. Thank you!

That would be easy to do! Make it like a pillow case and sew Velcro on the open one or even a zipper.
@SilverPonyKat

If you had used vinyl for the cushion, or something similar, then any mess can be easily wiped off. When using fabric, sew it like a pillowcase with either a zipper or Velcro to keep it closed. Then the fabric can be taken off and tossed in the washer. Love the idea of personalizing with the stickers! Can you do a video of your first aid kit? I need to make one. I need something like this for my harness. The bigger wheels will be easier to get it around!

I did this years ago for my child to take to Pony Club Camp. I used a garden foam kneeling pad for the top. Worked great. 😁

Everyone, at almost barn I’ve been at, uses these rather than wooden ones! So much more functional! You can just buy custom tack trunk cover if a nicer barn wants one.

for projects like this I highly recommend 3M extra strength fabric adhesive spray it'll attach the foam together it'll stick the fabric to the foam and it's washable. I have used this to attach suede to the seat of an Aussie saddle! I've been using it for a year and it hasn't come off yet. you could also use it to attach the whole thing to the tack box.
@BudgetEquestrian
@BudgetEquestrian 7 лет назад
That's great! I will look into that adhesive! The tube glue that I used for making the pad stick has held up really well, the foam pad is still firmly in place😀😀😀

OMG, this is sensational! I have decided to renovate Bertha (my horse float) and I have front storage which is quite frankly useless. This solves the issue. Your painting video is sensational too. We're flooded with cheap Chinese floats in Australia which means the second hand Aussie made floats that are well made are worth next to nothing and I just paid it off so not getting more debt!
@georgegoertzen4723
@georgegoertzen4723 6 лет назад
It may have more to do with your very cheap sewing machine then your ability. Getting a good quality second hand machine is better than a new cheap one. Button tuffed is much easier to get a better looking finish than quilting. Use a piece of Masonite cut to the size you need to fit the top of your trunk. Lay out your button pattern and drill small holes to pass the button hole thread that will hold the buttons in place. Self cover button forms and quilt batt can be purchased from most fabric stores or even Walmart. Add foam , then cover foam with a layer of fiber quilt batting to give a smoother edge. Cover these with your fabric and either staple or tape to the back of the Masonite. Add button tufting, using a small cheap flat button to keep the self covered button in place. I would then velcro the cushion to the top of the trunk rather than glue it so I could change the fabric as desired. I love your idea so much that I'm going to make my own. I too, couldn't justify the cost of buying the 'real' thing. Your idea is a tuffer, more affordable option and I can make one for each horse or type of tack. And they are stackable and keep tack clean, dry and safe from rodents for longer periods of storage. This has been such an inspiration for me and many more besides.

I ride horses and show cattle and I think this is a great idea because show boxes for showing cattle are around $400-$600 depended on the size you want and tack boxes for horses are all different prices so this is a great idea I will definitely be making one

Interesting. I might have looked for a piano bench cushion. A little more expensive but saves time and frustration, especially if your don’t sew 🙃 just another option. LOVE the stickers. Gives me some ideas for my tack/tool box.

If you don't want to sew a cushion, they do sell cushions for outdoor furniture that works. You just have to find the right size. I have a cushion originally used for a small, outdoor two person swing. You could also add some webbing to the inside of the cover and you could store some stuff there.

Next time, if you ever need to do this again, use thick card board or even particle board and use that as a base under the foam. When you fold the fabric under, you can secure it with wood glue and Staples. I got a cheap staple gun from Walmart and I've gotten a lot a use out of it!
@brittanysullivan2395
@brittanysullivan2395 6 лет назад
Caitlin Campbell did the same thing and used vinyl instead of cloth to be easy to clean off and waterproof. Used small screws from the inside to the board to keep it in place.

I really really like this idea! I go out basically every weekend with my horse/s and it's just a pain that my dad (who lives in the town 50 minutes away) has to come get me and the float, which means I have to pack everything in his car when he gets here. Which is annoying because I like to have everything ready and I can't sort it out its just putting everything in the back of the car. I tried using a box for a while for my brushes, saddle pads, bridles, ect. But it was still annoying and honestly didn't get unpacked! Do you think you'd be able to fit a saddle in it? I normally ride in my dressage saddle which is a bit longer. This would also be useful just to pull this instead of making 5 trips to where I take up and my take shed! I also have no idea if I can find something like this since I live in Australia and these will probably get quiet expensive
@BudgetEquestrian
@BudgetEquestrian 7 лет назад
Hi Sarah Mckendry :) I put my saddle in the tack trunk I made and it does fit, but then I just didn't have as much room for the other tack I have lol. If there is a store like Home Depot, or Lowes where you live, that would be a good place to see if they have a huge tool box like this. And I'm not sure if Home Depot delivers to Australia? But I am sure you could find one of these tool boxes, you just have to search for it. I hope you can find one, because it makes hauling a lot of stuff a LOT easier!
@sarahanne2
@sarahanne2 7 лет назад
That's okay as long as I don't have to carry my bridle or saddle haha. No unfortunately I don't have any of the shops. I will have a look but the biggest toolbox was probably be very expensive here unfortunately

Sarah Check out the Stanley 50 Gallon Mobile Chests. They're only a hair shorter than the Husky chests and they're available in AUS. Look at Mitre 10 City, Supercheap Auto, Paddington Hardware, or or General Stationary Supplies (as weird as that may sound lol). They're all Stanley suppliers out there. It should be around $75AUD. Hope that helps!

Hi Chloe :) It holds my saddle, but when I put the saddle in it, the saddle takes a lot of space. But if you don't have a lot of stuff, an English saddle will fit.
