In this video, I walk you through a quick little ruined walls build for us to test two formulas for homemade washes. I then show you how to make a cheap wash with materials you probably have around your house, and one with a little more expensive materials and then compare the two.
Cheap Wash:
- black/brown paint
- dish soap
- water
Premium Wash:
- liquitex flow aid
- black/brown ink
-water

That premium wash looked good enough to use on minis.

I see this so good for scenery like porous rocks. But what about action figures? Not miniatures, but something like 8” or so. Would this be suitable for textures in figures?

The cheap way version looks a bit more worn out and weathered. Will have to try this out with regular minis.

Great video. Question for you, I did a wash on a larger piece today and got some white residue. I read it could be that I should use distilled water? Do you have any recommendations on what to do/fix the white residue? Thanks!

So the idea is to add a little drop of dishwasher on my wet palette, mix my paint with it and water and that's it ??

Hi, question for you, I saw a video where a wash is applied and then cleaned the extra unwanted wash with 91% alcohol in a towel or cloth and I been doing that for my action figures, but will the same apply here if I use any of these washes? I don't do miniature terranes, only action figures so I'm curious if the alcohol will messed with the mixture or soap or the flow improver

Cheap wash takes it. Difference with premium not enough to justify price, especially on terrain.

you put a black wash on a black based terrain piece. What does it look like on a lighter based/colored item, say a white based object.

Having a back drop to catch overspray is a great idea! its not pressurized spray so the overspray in very minor but always a great idea:)

Why don't you mix your own high quality wash for minis? Wouldn't that give you more control to get exactly what you want?

I get that you have called your more expensive product combo - a “premium” because of price…..but holy! Acrylic vs the standard ink ( which is what you’re using ) ..,where Acrylic is the quality product - every single time!! It comes down to what’s is providing the colour to each of your mixes. Acrylic is pretty much 100% going to be a Pigment and the Ink will be using a Dye. Although using dye to provide the colour has its uses, you have to remember one big thing. Dyes are incredibly susceptible to fading . So much that black ink can go from dead black to barely being noticeable. It fades so much and so fast that it can actually disappear on the work. In a consistently daily lit studio, I’ve seen it disappear in 3 months. These dyes just really don’t hold up to any well lit environment. Pigments are a totally different thing. These days it’s pretty hard to find acrylic paint, where the pigment used matches or is worse than a dye when it comes to sensitivity to light. And “pigments” are the key to that stability. So you can have an ink wash that you paid more for the parts of it ( mainly the liquitex flow release - a product that’s totally worth it) - and it may even behave slightly than your first mix of wash. But, dude, what good is it if it just changes it’s appearance over less than a year removing the effect that you paid for - and ends up just going away? If you love using ink for whatever reason, buy a pigmented ink. Make sure it says it on the label. And an acrylic ink would be incredibly better. Slightly more expensive - likely. But it’ll be there 6 months or 20 years from now. And because it’s acrylic, you’ll be able to do different effects on top of that dried wash and never accidentally wipe it off. Most scenery and gaming will have good lighting over it to enhance its appearance and gameplay. But if it’s ink on that mini or scenery, that awesome lighting will be fading that nice ink wash effect you’ve done on it just much more quickly. As much as I used ink in my washes a long time ago, I’ll never use it now. I’ve also taught painting as my job, for 33 years. So I’ve got some time to look back upon even if it’s to shake my head. Forget the ink. Choose a pigmented ink or an acrylic ink if you must. Save the work that you are so happy with. Cheers

Here is the original video from Black Magic Craft. Fantasy Forge is a great channel but it is always important to give the originators credit and link to there videos.....ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IokSYHu58V8.html

Then you should credit earlier well known videos from Luke's APS (aka Geek Gaming Scenics) from 2017 or even Mel the Terrain Tutor's OG video from 2015. There's no plagiarism here, and neither Jeremy is one. It's just well known recipes from the community that YT channels with a strong following end up filming because everyone's asking them about it. If it's worth making, it's worth repeating it, nobody's getting swindled by spreading the knowledge and making the community bigger than it was.

I like you videos but....... So far all you have been doing is remaking Jeremy's videos from Black Magic Craft. I mean they are nearly identical. I understand you are inspired by him but you should be making your own totally unique content.

I appreciate the feed back. There is undoubtedly going to overlap of subject in tutorials for every single thing imaginable on youtube. I certainly don't go and copy BMC's videos intentionally. I base my tutorials off of the most frequently asked questions or requests I get from my audience. I also have followers that don't follow BMC. I think saying that my content is identical and implying I'm unoriginal is a little unfair as I have many tutorials/builds that are. And those that are maybe not as original, have a unique approach or technique. I will continue to try and create content that is helpful, informative and original:)

@@FantasyForgeMiniatures Watched them both and don’t find his assessment to be accurate. IMO This isn’t a ripoff it’s two tutorials that use different ingredients to produce similar results, but painting tabletop stuff isn’t a cornucopia of labyrinthine alcoves filled with forbidden knowledge to begin with, hence the overlap you mentioned. I appreciate that I now have two different recipes and pros and cons to go with them, so thank you, keep making good tutorials!

@@FantasyForgeMiniatures agreed, and even if it was identical (which it isn't) info, I'd appreciate your style, sense of humor, and not openly associating with black magic as a preferred alternative.
