I started out working in community radio - which lead to an interest in audio production. Fast-Forward 5 years and I now work as a freelance audio-producer, creating Audiobooks, Radio Adverts and a lot more for my clients. I learnt pretty much the majority of what I use today, through your channel - just wanted to say thanks, Mike!

Others might also be a little confused at ~2:20. It sounded like Mike said "reverb" which I could not find inside noise reduction/restoration. At first, I thought it might have moved into the reverb flyout. This is not the case, what Mike is saying is noise reduction/restoration > DeReverb. Thanks for the amazing videos, Mike.

really good review of this plugin. I've been using this for a few days and so far I really like it. I have found it works best after I have mixed a song without it first as best as I can. At that point I bring in Abby Road 3 and cycle through the speaker options. This will make any imperfections in the mix stick out like a sore thumb, usually in the lower mids. Abby Road 3 can help take your mixes up a notch or two when you don't have state of the art equipment to work with.

Very helpful tips but I disagree with cutting out all the breaths - others of course will disagree. Cutting them out sounds OK if there's a music bed underneath but I feel it makes the speaker sound too robotic and unnatural. After doing basic noise reduction and setting up the auto gate I have a four-step process. I start with a single tube compressor with a light ratio of 4x1, then utilize a De-Esser. After that, I throw on the parametric EQ and add in that high end sparkle and reduce the low end. Finally, I add a Hard Limiter and either boost or reduce the signal depending on the track. After I set my effect racks for each host/guest I'll do the loudness matching. I've found these steps usually create a very listenable product. I also will add another Hard Limiter on the master track and set it around -7 DB to ensure nobody's ears get blown out. Any thoughts on how I could improve this process? Love your videos Mike, thank you
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 года назад
The one thing I would suggest rather than limiting to -7db at the end match the loudness to the podcast standard of -16LUFS
@kmkm-dp9wc
@kmkm-dp9wc 2 года назад
@@MikeRussell Thanks for the response Mike, would you suggest doing the loudness matching first or last in the processing portion of the edit
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 года назад
Both! I'd suggest matching the loudness of the clips before you start processing and at the end of the mixdown to ensure the mixed down file also hits a consistent level.

I add compressor to a portable recorder after the recording and it sounds good but I wanted to try a USB compressor mic but it's too sensitive and picks up everything. Is there something I can do to make it less sensitive? The compressor mic is in my laptop. When I started podcasting in 2004, I used Castblaster. I love what the program does and I can't get it working the way it used to. Can you recommend another program that works similar to Castblaster? I love pushing buttons and stuff like that when doing my podcast live to the hard drive.

Hi Mike - Audition Newbie here with a question regarding Parametric EQ, specifically your suggestion beginning at 7:27. I do not see how you start the recording AND manipulate the HP or the other levels to simultaneously hear the changes. When I attempt to perform this task, I must press play to begin the track, then when I manipulate the HP, I hear no difference. Suggestions?
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell Год назад
Follow the instructions carefully in the video, everything you need to know is included. If you're not hearing the HP then push it up to a very high level and you'll hear the difference. The idea though of the HP is just to remove frequencies that aren't in the human voice so when setting the HP unless you're making radio imaging and want a very processed voice you shouldn't really notice a difference when using it for a podcast except perhaps to remove some low end noises.

@discGolfZulu
@discGolfZulu 2 года назад
If any normalizing or compression are needed, where would you do that in relation to the steps you took in this video? (Also, I assume the use of the autogate takes care of all necessary noise reduction, yes?)
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 года назад
There is no one size fits all answer to this question as it depends on what sources are going into your podcast. Also the autogate is a gate which opens and closes and allows all sound through the gate above the threshold (including background noise) and no sound through the gate below the threshold. The best practice to deal with noise reduction is to remove it at source before recording 👍

Would love to hear what's going on in your brain when you do things like Parametric EQ. Booth Junkie has been great for a minor look at the aspects in Reaper, but I could see you making decisions in the EQ for this podcast trailer... any chance of a Parametric EQ explanation and how to decide what works for each voice? Eg. reducing 200-250Hz to remove "muddiness"
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 года назад
Hi Matthew, very valid request and one that's often asked but without wishing to sound patronising how to EQ is something you learn through practice and experience. There is no set and forget unless you're EQing your own voice recorded through your own mic in your own studio. If you're producing different voices or even your own recorded through different equipment the answer would be different. You're looking to avoid muddy bass by rolling off the low end and avoid sibilance without removing sparkle. There are some tips in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k07U2hqVUfc.html and also we cover EQ in our production courses courses.musicradiocreative.com/

@@MikeRussell Absolutely fair - as someone starting at the bottom, hunting for a methodology or a path to guide the journey to experience is probably common! Hi Mike! i really appreciate your videos. I'm editing a podcast regularly and I am trying to figure out the smartest way to do it. In this podcast we have two women talking on two mics to record their voices on separate tracks. Is the any smart way to remove the sound on mic 2 from person 1 and vice versa? Mic 1 records person 1 but also captures the voice of person 2, but lower. Can I remove person 2 from mic 1 in any simple and smart way? The way I do it now is that I mark the bit I want to remove and then lower it, but it's time consuming. Mostly I want to edit out the sighs and breathing, is noisegate the best way? I've tried that for the speech aswell but that only makes the people sound weird :) I haven't been able to find the answer by googling or among your videos. Thanks in advance, Emma
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 года назад
Hi Emma. The easiest way is to position the speakers and mics so that the mic bleed is minimised. Failing that a well set noise gate is the way to go.

Hi Mike! Every time I try to remove breaths, the maximum amplitude statistics I get is 27.41 and when ticking the autogate some of the speech ends up being inside the closed gates.
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 года назад
Try changing the attack, release and hold functions but if you're breaths are loud compared to your speech this is unfortunately likely to happen I'm afraid.
@renatussilvano7859
@renatussilvano7859 2 года назад
@@MikeRussell My breath aren't loud. It's like the effect isn't being applied to the voice.
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 года назад
What’s happening is you’re setting your noise gate based on the results of amplitude statistics of your breaths but your quiet parts of your voice are also at our below the maximum amplitude or your breaths hence why they are also being cut out. If you’re using a noise gate then adjust the hold to be a higher number and the attack also and this may help. If this doesn’t help then you may want to consider Waves DeBreath which you can get with 10% off using mrc.fm/waves which may also help.
