I just got a job at a landscaping company and I can get all the throw-away plants/trees that I want from the "dump" pile! Plus I can take any cuttings from pruning everything. Needless to say, I'm bringing home lots of plant possibilities for bonsai projects, and learning about different ones that I didn't even have access to look at before I got my job. In addition to purple wisteria with a fragrance, and Star Jasmine, I get to experiment with Indian Hawthorn, all kinds of yews, Elaeagnus (Silverberry), all kinds of hollies (Needlepoint and Nellie), standard maples, jap maples, crape myrtles, oaks . . . Wish that I had a way to send you all my hundreds of cuttings! :)

I can't help feeling sorry for Mr Chan, I used to have a youtube channel some years back and the obligation to followers can be a little heavy on the shoulders at times. It becomes another job in itself and with everything else he has to do, can just add to the work load, no matter how much the person enjoys it, it can feel a burden at times when we aren't in the mood for it. Having said that, I have just purchased my white wisteria to keep in a pot, I have read that the Japanese wisteria grows clockwise because of how it grew many centuries ago, because Japan used to be in the Southern hemisphere but moved to the Northern, but the wisteria from Japan refused to adapt. Interestingly enough, in Southern hemisphere places, tendrils grew this way whereas in the Northern hemisphere tendrils grew anti-clockwise, as does the water flow in the plug hole of a bath? I am in my 50's and have only just learned this interesting fact about why things grow either clockwise or anti-clockwise. Thank you for this informative video, I look forward to growing my first wisteria bonsai, I am sure one of many to come thanks to your wisdom :)

I am surprised that the wisteria you showed at the Chelsea Flower Show is a picture I have admired for years, glad to know it's one of yours. I have been missing flowers a lot this year. Thanks to a long visit to family far away this year, my garden went unattended and I really don't have any flowers to enjoy. Mainly thanks to a patch on miniature pumpkins growing all over them. I remember maybe 6 months ago you worked on a customer's wisteria, it had bloomed a bit early because it was kept in a greenhouse. The trunk was straight at first then leaned to the side, with a branch coming from the outside of the "elbow". That tree motivated me to buy a wisteria THAT DAY, lol. In the past 6 months it has taken over my fence 😂 Can't wait til spring so I can get it on it's way. Thanks for the info Peter!

I brought my Wisteria into the house because it's getting cold in New England. Today I looked at it to see if it needed water and it was covered in spider mites 😭. Luckily I have some spider mite spray, and I'll continue to watch it. When I bought it, it was just a stick, and now it has leaved out pretty nicely, no blooms yet though. I can't wait to see if/when it blooms.

Kdybych umela tocit a vkladat videa, videl byste tvarovani smutecni vrby. Vrby pestuji v suibanech, tvorim ostruvek s vrbou a kolem jezirko.

Hi Ken, I have a number of Bonsai.. probably only 6 wisteria. One of which has a knotted root, probably my best one but I worry it will choke itself in time. Should I tackle the root nibari now and remove the choker or will it be fine without intervention? If it were any other root system I would have done so but so many Wisteria I deal with on houses seem to manage but they are bigger plants under less stress. Thanks for this video it was very helpful!

I have been reading that following the very hot, dry period we experienced in the UK caused many trees and shrubs to react as if it were autumn. They simply retracted all the sap from the leaves as a defence and the existing leaves just turned brown. There was no amount watering that could stop this. Strangely, some of my plants did this, and others didn't, even two of the same species reacted differently to each other. They all got watered the same.
@Stettafire
@Stettafire Год назад
It's kinda interesting because a lack of watering can also cause this. Essentially the water fails to reach the apex and the plant just rejects that part and focuses on the parts it can keep alive

It stopped flowering. I cut it back a lot and discovered the next year that many long tendrils do not over winter in a colder climate, so I had many dead canes instead of flowers.

Apparently, they are super easy to air-layer. This is exciting news to me :) A word of warning on sawing Wisteria - the wood is toxic and carcinogenic, so absolutely wear a lot of protective equipment, and do not try to make sculptures out of the wood. Wisteria wood is often used to imitate persimmon wood, because it is so inexpensive and easy to grow compared to persimmon - but yeah, toxic furniture is not fun to own.

@MrTheWaterbear
@MrTheWaterbear Год назад
@@ms.pirate Just to be clear - mostly the wood dust or exposed core wood is dangerous, because it has a habit of decomposing into a toxic dust over time. If you have a large Wisteria, you need to make sure it grows over stable support. You can freely prune or air layer it whenever you feel like it - they are quite robust. @@luigiluigi2098 Yes washing up liquid used for the dishes is fine. Will not harm your plants at all. Yes I do believe it is neem oil, but I've never tried neem oil
