HOW TO MANAGE THE PATIENT WHO IS CRASHING ON THE VENTILATOR // Things can go wrong on the mechanical ventilator, alarms can sound, breaths will stack, patients will become not be synchronous withe the ventilator. In extreme cases, patients may become hemodynamically stable.
This episode of CritBits will demonstrate a rapid mnemonic to help you to rapidly evaluate and treat these patients. This is a much watch for anyone who manages mechanically ventilated patients.

Hi, thx for the great video. I have a question: last night, I had a patient whose satO2 suddenly decreased and he appeared so distressed. And so I did what you said here and I disconnected the vent from the patient and ambu bag him. But his respiratory drive was so high that I couldn't follow his rate...and so he ironically became more desaturated. 😢..Do you have any advice what I should do if I have this situation again in the future? Sedate more? Or give paralytics?thanks

Very tough to comment without knowing the entire scope of the patients issues. Sorry

@@CriticalCareNow hi,that's ok. Thx for replying.. but just one question..is it normal or often to give an extra bolus sedative before disconnecting the patient from the ventiator to bag the patient manually? Thx

Truly depends on the situation.

what should be done if a patient develops a pneumothorax while on mechanical ventilation? would you manually bag or switch to PC mode until chest tubes get inserted?

Lower peep to the lowest tolerated levels and place tube

What do you think of removing the vent and bagging the patient that is crashing and/or in cardiac arrest?
