Thanks Jeff & PYS, even a dummy like me can understand basic electrical systems now. I am applying this knowledge to my vehicle and caravan with extra batteries for free camping. I've enjoyed all your videos also.

PO Had a 3 Bank charger in place, I added a House bank last season. I'll be switching the House bank to Battery 1 "Post1" sweet tip since house is the most used.

Hi Jeff. I've just been binge watching all your Seminar videos. What a great resource. Thank you so much. I'm in Australia so you already know everything will be fused. :^) With these Battery Isolators, is it possible to use more than one isolator? Say one from the alternator as you have explained but add another smaller one in the solar circuit to split between house and starter to keep both the house and starter "topped up"? This is on the proviso that the chemistry of both the house and starter batteries are the same, Thanks in advance.

Awesome video, I'm getting hooked and learning so much from your channel. Thank you. Question. I've replaced an original old 2 alternator, 3 bank isolator because the alternators would never charge the house bank. I'd have to put one of the alternators on the House post on the isolator to get a charge to the house. I replaced it but the new one is behaving the same way. The alternators are 51 amps each. The house batteries, of course, are the most important to charge underway, I'd really like that isolator to work properly. Any ideas?

Jeff, question about the isolator when having a setup of three banks. Starter battery, AGM 80aH, House 300aH lifepo4 and thruster AGM 95aH. Is that a durable setup to let the alternator charge all of them in parallel (60 AMP standard alternator).

Awesome video I think you've solved my problem, thanks Jeff! Before I bite the bullet can you tell me if my shore power battery charger will charge both batteries via the battery isolator? Will both charge up while I'm connected to shore power? And can I have batteries of two different sizes charge from the battery isolator? Thanks again for the the video!
@PacificYachtSystems

Hi John, most battery chargers (powered by AC shorepower or AC generator) have 2 or 3 outputs and will recharge multiple batteries without the need for a battery isolator.

HI Jeff . I have one question . let's say I HAVE A STOCK alternator , lead acid battery for cranking and an AGM house bank . is it okay to install an isolator ? would the alternator undercharge the house AGM banks because there is no external regulator .

Great stuff Jeff, the content is spot on and you present it well. How does this setup work (or not work) with daisy chained solenoid? Is it incompatible or just not optimal? You mention it in the video but could you elaborate a bit on the why?

If the house bank is undercharged on post 1, and there is a mostly charged starter battery on post 2 and a mostly charged windless battery on post 3, and since the battery isolator has no charging profile per post, and it charges based on what it sees on post 1, won't it overcharge posts 2 and 3? PS: Love these videos! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience and passion. It makes a huge difference and I have learned a lot.

Hi Marco, battery isolators are a compromise device. In a perfect world, each battery would have it's own externally regulated alternator and dedicated battery charger. But that ideally world doesn't really exist. For perspective, never seen this ideally setup ever. A battery isolator is like a multiple battery bank charger, it has 2 or 3 outputs and all the batteries connected to it will be charged to the same charging voltage. Ideally all the batteries should be the same size and the same level of discharge for the isolator or charger to not slightly overcharge a single battery. But that's rarely the case.Remember the less then perfect charging will only last for a short period of time while the alternator is in bulk and absorption mode.

@@PacificYachtSystems could you put a DC to DC charger on each post to charge different battery types that may be used for different banks with various charging profiles? Just a thought. Thanks for all the great information 🙂

How do you actually install one? I bought one and I am not sure how to wire up the energiser lead and what it’s for?

Thanks Jeff for the videos! Just one question: I've read that connecting the isolator between the battery and the alternator will produce a voltage level difference that would change the way the alternator's regulator ''sees'' the battery charge level, is that right? If so what should be done to solve this issue? thanks.
@PacificYachtSystems

Hi Martin, that's exactly the advantage of a modern FET battery isolator versus a diode battery isolator.
@BRYKS22
@BRYKS22 3 года назад
So basically, say if I have 3 batteries on my sailboat. 1 is for cranking and the other 2 are separate house batteries. Let's say I have been running house battery 1 all day and want to charge it up, the battery isolator will only send the charge to the batteries that need it (#1) to be charged without overcharging the others say like if they were charging in parallel?
@PacificYachtSystems
@PacificYachtSystems 3 года назад
The battery that is the most discharged will get most of the current coming from the alternator via the battery isolator. The alternator regulator will reduce output as both batteries are nearing full capacity.

@@PacificYachtSystems and doing this it will keep from cooking my charged batteries? Seems like back when I was running on "all" I did that once.

Jeff, how does a battery isolator cope with an alternator charging a 12v starter battery and the house bank is 24V?
@PacificYachtSystems
@PacificYachtSystems 4 года назад
Hi Mark, a battery isolator won't solve this problem. You'll need a DC to DC converter/charger to make this happen.

@@PacificYachtSystems you come that way in every of your videos. You are almost insulting your audience by your posture, your overelaborating AND not explaining a thing. Just the way you do it, not why. I'm an educated and trained electrician with 2 yrs. of electric engineering faculty, may call it a BS electrical engineer. And I did boats. Yes, you know your stuff by practice only. The reason why you don't explain the workings is that you don't understand it in the first place. Maybe that's where your arrogance come from ?

I respectfully disagree John. I dont perceive arrogance at all. I think you are misinterpreting his passionate confidence and sarcasm as arrogance. Having a sarcastic sense of humour myself I actually quite enjoy it. He is not lecturing to engineering students, he is explaining in such a way the ordinary boaters like myself can understand.
