Judges are always on the look out for the outstanding contestant who is such an obvious finalist (or even winner) that it makes their jobs much easier. Every pageant organization seeks a natural marketer in their titleholder who understand the ways in which brands are shared, grown, and expanded. This also extends to you as an individual and whether you're competing for the attention and approval of the judges, or a prospective applicant entering the job market, the strategies shared in this video apply all the same. Good luck!

Hi Crystal. Thank you, yet again, for a fabulous video. Could I make a video request? I am relatively new to pageantry, but I would love to know what happens prior to a contestant at Miss Universe, for instance, walking down the stage and being called in the list of semifinalists. What were they judged on prior to that? What do judges focus on? Basically I would like to know how judges narrow it down from more than 90 contestants to 35.

Hi Taylor - Thank you so much for that excellent question! A few days ago when I first read your comment, I actually sent a few feelers out to my Miss Universe contacts and I wanted to get some answers before responding or making a video. I've gotten some mixed answers. It appears that the specific scoring elements in the preliminaries are not publicly disclosed. If they are available to franchise holders, it's tightly-guarded and not super transparent to the rest of us onlookers. Unlike the Miss America organization, which is very transparent (it's all listed on their website) but funnily enough, known for constantly changing their scoring system which leads confusion but for the opposite reason - nobody can keep track anymore - the Miss Universe organization has kept their "secret sauce" close to the chest. The Miss Universe org's scoring system has been the subject much speculation and I'm getting the sense that it's a bit of a known public secret (heh) that the Miss Universe winner is selected by a combination of both the judging panel AND the Miss Universe Organization- aka the pageant officials. But on a high level, the main areas of selection to narrow down the 90+ contestants to the top finalists are through their scores in preliminary competition, which takes place over a few days. The areas they compete in are swimsuit, interview, and evening gown. I'm going to share the responses from one of my trusted sources here. My comments are between asterisks *like this.* "Miss USA has long been criticized for not being more transparent with their scoring. They even say during the telecast that the finalists are determined by the judges and the miss universe organization. It’s a known fact that they have the power to select contestants they want to make the finals, even if the judges didn’t pick them. I can’t speak for the scoring at nationals beyond that but I can tell you how the locals and state competitions work. I was under the impression that’s the same judging for other states and nationals. They use something called a mention system. Meaning there are no scores. Let’s say you’re trying to cut your contestants down to 15 finalists. After interview you, they circle the 15 they like. After evening gown, judges circle the 15 they like and same after swimsuit. Then basically whoever gets circled the most moves on. And then the top five is typically a ranking system like Miss America used to do. *Scores are no longer involved in this - it's only a list of 5 names and the judges rank their pick for winner, 1st runner up, 2nd, runner up, 3rd runner up, etc.* They say that the interview is a personality interview so it’s primarily just getting to know that contestant with likeability and charisma being the most important factors. Although I do feel like that’s changed a bit as I have had some contestants at Miss Teen USA get more political questions (however, she went to a terrific school and possessed a very political resume so that could have been why she got those questions.) Onstage question is actually not judged it’s just taken into account when they do the overall ranking which is why sometimes a woman will win when others clearly did better in their onstage answering." I'm actually in the process of organizing an interview with a former director for a Miss CA USA local, which is the same organization that leads up to Miss Universe, and I'll ask for a bit more context. I hope that helps for now!

Hi Ruth! I’d take the lead of your headshot photographer (especially if he/she does pageant headshots) but of the top of my head: 1. Bring different colored tops for a variety of looks 2. Switch up your smiling expression ever so slightly in between takes to have more variation in your photo set. You can also make small adjustments in the way you angle your chin or head too - that’s what professional models do to provide a wider set of options. 3. It can really help to get your makeup professionally done. But if not, a good photographer is likely also a good photo editor/retouched and this person should have a checklist of things to fix: whiten teeth slightly, smooth out skin in some places, bump up hair, etc. 4. This is my personal advice but when you choose your headshot don’t forget to choose one that actually looks like you! Have a great time Ruth!
