Cialdini’s 7 principles of influence: 1. Scarcity. At the top of the list. The fear of loss or the fear of loss of opportunity is the most motivating factor in human psychology. Scarcity is more powerful than urgency 2. Consistency. People have a deep desire to remain consistent in what they do and say 3. Likability. People like people who like them (praise). People like people who are like them (similarities) 4. Reciprocity. People feel obligated to give back 5. Authority. People are much more influenced by those who have a deep understanding and a lot of experience in their craft 6. Social Proof. People are much more likely to be influenced by you if you have credible people who vouch for you 7. Unity. Shared identity or sharing membership of the same group. ‘We’ group

You need to know who you are dealing with for reciprocity to apply. There are a lot of entitled and narcissistic people in society these days. In my life believing in reciprocity ended up in my getting really burned by the people I gave the most to.

This is very very good and I am a professional negotiator. The key point is the one about not dismissing your efforts. Unless you respect yourself, nobody will respect you. I used to have a lawyer come into my office and blabber on and on for 2 hrs about all sorts of things, run things by me, ask for advice, tell me what sort of day she had had, etc. I would walk into her office once in a blue moon and spent 15 mins and on leaving the office I'd say "Thanks, sorry to bug you" and her response would be "Mmmhmmmm". It became clear to me that she didn't notice that the reciprocation was greater on my part than hers, because I never valued my time the way she valued hers.

I know what you are talking about, Jennifer. But there are give backers still out there, right? From what you're saying it sounds like you're suffering from toxic relationships. You're probably feeling more obliged than you should. And it is you and only you to choose the people you want to see around yourself. You choose what and whom to pay your attention and time to. So water the flower not the weeds like Buddhists say. Best luck! I hope you'll find your way!

Reciprocity is evolutionary as well - we have seen this behavior in early primates, which was baffling because it went against a self serving evolutionary drive, but realized reciprocity allowed the population to survive better rather than individuals - super fascinating

This information explains a big arguement me and my father had up until he passed away. I wish he could have seen this to understand my reasoning. To be quick with what the argument was.... He owned a sign company. I would meet a customer and find out what they wanted and say I will get back to them with an estimate. I would get back to them with the estimate but in addition I would also give them a scaled drawing showing the colors and letter style I recommended. My father would blow a gasket. He would say there gonna take our art and give it to a competitor and you just did the artwork away for free. This is my validation that my sales sense was in tune with what society installs in people. Unfortunately I had to leave the family business and open up my own sign company.. My sales on an average is approxamately 80-90 percent of estimates given with artwork before it is even signed. I didn't know this was the key factor in why my sales being were so high.

Genius. Witty-full Sir. Subtle re-phrasing makes a huge difference. These are all fine, human manners WE should embrace every day. One of favorite episodes from Lewis's portfolio. Thanks Le'. As a designer, I'd complain about his book cover. I'd never notice it either in a bookstore or on site. But that's justmy visual reading mind.

Great vid Lewis .... surprised he didn't say regarding the 'we' thing ...I ALWAYS speak to customers using this word and never 'you' in conversation ...ie ...How are we doing today ?.. what are we looking for ? etc. Works time after time and I've used this hack for years to create AIDA in sales ..ie . Awareness, interest, desire and action, (the sequence to close any sale) . . Keith UK

This has been one of the most enlightening uploads ever, and the psychology of selling in a ideal way!! Not by using any of the techniques that we've had Used on us all.... But, the way we can help each other, as well as being honest, open and honourable!
