Back around 1975 my mom was driving us kids to Denver in her ‘66 VW Bug. The clutch cable broke and some old guy (old to a 9 year old) explained to mom how to “ float the gears.” We made it over the Rocky Mtns, but never could figure out reverse. Fortunately Bugs are light weight cars and mom had three boys😃

Being a truck driver, I only use the clutch on stop and start. Just like others have said, it's what's called "floating the gears". I didn't realize it was a party trick, but i guess all of us truck drivers are cool now to the bike community. 😂
@Qassu78

Not the same thing at all. Gearboxes are different types. Motorcycle gearboxes are constant mesh gearboxes that doesn't actually have neutral at all. The "neutral" on motorcycle gearbox is usually located between 1st and 2nd gear and it's just a small dent in the mechanism forcing the mesh not to let any torque through. The neutral on motorcycle gearbox is the party trick :'D The construction of said constant mesh gearbox makes it actually really easy to use it without the clutch, even the neutral is easy find without any use of the clutch.

Depends on the truck, and how old it is, older trucks shifted at higher rpms. Is always been a sound for me, and a feel. If you do it right, should only take 2 fingers, it will slide right out and pull itself into the next gear.... I pull a tanker, 7000gl bulk tank, no baffles, just usually around 4500 to 5000 gl of methanol or caustic, something like that sloshing around... it will teach you to shift if you don't know how. Screw up and get a sledgehammer to the back... its a living.

I can only speak for myself and my 1100 cc but i have to be somewhat precise on how much pressure i apply to the gear lever. Too much and you shift before unloading the tranny, too little and you can end up in neutral between the gear which i feel is even worse! But yes i take riding somewhat seriously so normally i shift w/o clutch for practice.

I thoughtlessly downshifted without the clutch during my MSF basic rider course. The sudden slowdown of the bike sure caught my attention! But I’ve had cars with manual transmissions and learned this technique. I’d gently pump the stick against the next gear and it would slip into place when RPMs matched

I actually figured this out on my old bike but did not continue doing it as I made the logical assumption that it is really bad for the engine and could cause long term damage
@lucascarracedo7421

The main, and probably only, downside to clutchless shifting is that it tends to favor being in a certain RPM range that works best for each bike and gear. If you are riding with a relatively strong high or low RPM bias it'll get harder to pull it off. For example, when revs are super high and you would regularly blip down using the clutch, it won't be very fun doing a clutchless. So while useful and fun it's also quite a bit situation specific.
@Domthemechanic
@Domthemechanic 4 месяца назад
Ehhhh tbh on my Honda I be downshifting at 10k rpm up to like 11.5k+ all the time and it not hard at all. I’m sure it’s different for every bike but I’ve been on manyyy older super sports without a blip, or quick shifter and it’s been super easy. Might just be the mechanic in me tho
@lucascarracedo7421
@lucascarracedo7421 4 месяца назад
@@Domthemechanic but you just answered yourself. For those bikes 11K RPM is their preferred state. So yeah, it depends on the bike, exactly. If you were running that kind of bike at 6k RPM it wouldn't be so easy to pull a clutchless.

you can do this in a normal H pattern gearbox in a car too, It's not just a sequential gearbox thing. I had to one day when my clutch cable broke. (Mk2 Escort) it did mean starting the engine in first gear to move off, but it pops out of gear quite easy, you just have to get the revs right to put it back into a gear... and when you do it right, you don't even feel it except through the gear lever clicking in.

I've done it on my bike here and there, and yes, I'm a truck driver too. We float gears, only really use it for start and stop in the truck, but I still like to use the clutch on the bike because unlike a semi truck, it has a synchronizer and it's no effort with the hand, unless I was riding for about an hour or two, and my hands are frozen, then I'll float the gears till I pull off

Clutch less shifting has been around for decades. We as racers often shifted without the clutch because it was quicker. We would put some pressure up or down the shift lever and tap the kill button for a moment. This would unload the gears and allow the shift to happen without too much wear. Regularly shifting without the clutch was definitely harder on the transmission due to wear on the gear dogs rounding off. As a professional racer we didn’t cater to at all about that because we tore our engines down typically after every one or two races. Personally I would think that riders should use the clutch because the transmission gears will last longer. There is another methodology of clutch less shifting that we did that put a kill switch on the shift drum to trigger whenever you pulled up or down. This made for some very fast shifting and it also wore the gears out quickly. Don’t do it, it is too hard to squeeze the clutch lever so just do it.

I've been doing clutchless shifting (up and down) for the last 5 years on my 125cc. No problems at all, other than reaching a false neutral 1-2 times a year and rev bombing. I only do from 2-5th gear, 1-2nd is harder because you can easily get in neutral and have to use the clutch because the crank RPM is too high compared to the rear wheel RPM. I don't do it on my 600, because it doesn't have 2 throttle wires, so the carburetor butterfly valves are 'floating'(open) a bit more than the actual gas roll position making it very clunky.

I clutchless upshift when I'm feeling lazy or racey, but everything always works smooth when using the clutch. I really don't like clutchless downshifting. I don't feel that there is enough time between the gears to accelerate the engine. It's fun in a car to slip in into neutral by letting off the gas and rev-matching while in neutral to slip into the lower gear without the clutch, but you have to get it right.

I've seen so many YT videos where the riders will be in 4th or 5th gear and come to a red light and just pull the clutch in and let it drop to idle and come to a stop w/out even downshifting. It seems like those are the guys who don't know how to rev match. I prefer to always downshift when coming up to lights so my bike is in the proper gear for the speed I'm at in case I do need to suddenly accelerate to avoid something or if the light changes to green I'm ready to just give it gas.

thats crazy....I do this by blipping the throttle, not by letting off the throttle. for both upshifts and downshifts, lightly push down or up on the shifter, depending on which way you intend to shift, blip the throttle, and you should fall into desired gear. and yes, it is how I got home anytime my clutch cable snapped, and how I got around on a bike that had no clutch cable or lever (it was a bitch, too, because in addition to no clutch lever, it was also a push start, meaning that if it didn't start, you had to get it back into neutral before pushing off again. same for stalls.)
