I play in bar leagues and find that stun through and stun back are good shots to hit during pre match practice, to get the feel of the cue ball dialed in. A lot of those bar balls are different weights (usually heavier than the object balls) so it's an adjustment when you're used to practicing with normal equipment

Hey Dr. Dave - this is great - but I think there is one small mistake at 5:30 - for a stun-thru at a longer distance - you say to set your tip for a stun shot, and then 'lower' your tip - but I think you meant 'raise' your tip - which you actually do. Hi Dr. Dave Great video! :) However, I got a question: If stun shot, or just stun, is where the cue ball is purely sliding with no forward or backspin when it hits the object ball how is it possible to stun it forward or backwards? Wouldn't those shots simply just be topspin og backspin shots? Btw, thank you for all the great content, I love your videos :)
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 2 месяца назад
Good point. It isn’t quite stun, but it is very close. stun back = slight draw due to a very small amount of backspin stun forward = slight follow due to a very small amount of topspin
@ricknelson6405
@ricknelson6405 Год назад
With both the tip position and speed of stroke affecting the amount of draw, do you think it would be better to isolate the variables by practicing drills using the same tip position and varying speed, or using the same speed and varying the tip position?
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards Год назад
For the types of shots in this video, it is important to vary the tip position. But for draw shot control over a larger distance, varying the speed is a better. See the videos and info here! billiards.colostate.edu/faq/draw/advice-and-drills/

I’ve been trying to catch the part where the cueball is still just barely rotating back or when it starts to roll forward. It’s a lot to visualize. It probably is easier to do with a bit faster speed. Thanks.
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 2 года назад
The amount of spin is so little, it is difficult to see. The the motion of the CB reveals all. Also, if the tip is slightly above the stop-shot height, a small amount of topspin at the OB is guaranteed. And if the tip is above the stop-shot height, a small amount of bottom spin at the OB is guaranteed.

Dr.Dave, is there a difference between stun draw and just draw? Look like the stun draw/follow is merely a special case of a draw/follow. Though it does seem like in a real game situation, thinking of a shot as a stun draw/follow rather than mere draw/follow might offer additional control in ensuring we get just the right amount of draw/follow. @DrDaveBilliards

Couldn't you show what happens if you try to play a follow shot but use too much speed? Many players seem to be VERY surprised that their "force follow" end up as more or less a stop shot due to the speed, making the cueball slide...

If a "force follow" shot doesn't go forward, it isn't just a problem with speed ... the tip is hitting the CB too low!
