According to what you discuss on the "ball-first hit" part starting around 5:12, I'd guesstimate about a 14% chance of scratching on this shot, even if the ball is pocketed successfully. Do you think that adding topspin or backspin might be a good idea to avoid a scratch more predictably, or would you recommend only honing in one's accuracy?
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 2 года назад
@@myblacklab7 At 6:03, I mention and show that adding backspin does help avoid the scratch.

Wouldn't the bonus shot be illegal under APA rules since you cannot touch an object ball with the cue ball during ball in hand? And if you can't touch another ball, then you can't make it frozen.
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards Год назад
@@timothyrisch9875 It is a carefully-worded "proposition shot." You are correct -- it wouldn't be legal under any league or tournament rules. Watch the video again to see how I worded it. I didn't say you had ball in hand or that ball-in-hand rules apply.

I play on English tables all the time ,a lot of these shots wouldn't work because the pockets are far tighter. The center pockets on American tables are over an inch and a half bigger and the other pockets are over an inch bigger and the balls are only quarter of an inch bigger. I've played on American tables and they are a lot easier to pot a ball on.

Yeah, I practice the beyond 90 frozen shot every now and again, and it is less difficult than one would think, at least if you practice it every now and again. And when the cue to object ball distance is much shorter it is that much easier. At some positions you really have to watch for the scratch, though, so it's good to know those. @theayatoll in billiards, we call that 'cue ball control'. An amateur player shoots just to make a shot and hopes they make it, but a great player sees 4 or more shots ahead and uses cue ball control to get the cue ball exactly where he wants for those shots. A great player makes easy shots because they put the cue ball exactly where they want to make an easy shots.

suggestion for the final shot of frozen balls. you should be able to put CB in the kitchen (if playing one pocket) 1 diamond from the side rail and aim at the 11 as if the 13 isn't there with medium-medium full power the 11 should go 2 rails into the corner :) always enjoy the videos!!

On the Frozen Proposition Shot, another solution was made many years ago - and which I have done quite a number of times. The cue ball is placed in-line with the #11 object ball, about six to 10 inches away. It is a simple jump shot. You just hop on top of the 11-ball; once you get the hang of the exact amount of angle and speed, it becomes one of those 'close your eyes and shoot' kind of shots.

Thanks for the vid. I'm playing in Argentina and they got some really funky rules here. Opponent get two shots if you scratch and two shots if you don't hit your ball, and two shots if you sink one of their balls. Also, the 8 ball has to go into the pocket where your last ball drops. You ever hear of such a thing? Pool in Bizarro world.

Absolutely love your videos and analysis Dr Dave, unusual question but have you ever played or taken an interest in English 8 ball pool? Or reds and yellows pool, black ball rules? I would be very interested to see what shots you would come up with using that ruleset on the kind of tables I play on, of course I’m sure you’d still demolish me 😂
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 2 года назад
I've played only a couple of times when I visited England about 20 years ago. Many 8-ball shots I show in my videos also apply to English 8-ball. Certainly, all principles like CB control and pattern play apply equally. What rule differences do you think would create opportunities for radically different shot choices?
@jackmurray3885
@jackmurray3885 2 года назад
@@DrDaveBilliards combination shots for the 8 ball which are legal as long as both balls are potted , irrespective of the order they drop, or the total snooker rule where if you are completely snookered from hitting an object ball of your set you don’t have to hit a rail after contact, or even the 2 shot rule on a foul, where by if your opponent fouls you have a free shot where you can hit any ball including the 8 or pocket an opponents ball, then you have your visit as normal, I’ve played for 5 years and know there’s some different shot types you can use with these rules but I was curious with your imagination what you could cook up 😊

Nice video, DrDave. I jus want to know a few things. At 9:36, this may not be likely to happen, but if there was external influence on the game-winning shot, like Demetrius catching the ball mid-air, mid-shot, what will the verdict of the shot be? Also, at 13:12, if this comes up in a game situation, however unlikely, under all balls / all fouls category, how do you think it's possible to freeze the cue ball to the 13 like that and to avoid the foul at the same time? Thanks
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 2 года назад
At 9:36, if the shooter interfered with the CB (e.g., by catching it) before the shot is over (i.e., before all balls come to rest), then it would be a foul and loss of game (if playing 8-ball). At 13:12, I was clear in saying "you can put the CB anywhere" as part of the proposition. In an actual game situation, you are not allowed to touch an OB with the CB with "ball in hand." That would be a foul.

@@DrDaveBilliards I'd like to add this 13:12 shot to my game-winning arsenal. So, what if you have the opponent or referee watch you place the cueball and you successfully leave a hair- or paper-thin space? Does being frozen make a difference vs. such a gap? It seems like the space could cause as little error as striking a frozen cueball very slightly off-center.
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 2 года назад
@@raygrinders3918 Being frozen is totally different than having a tiny gap, in which case a double-hit foul would be unavoidable. For more info, see: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/foul/double-hit/

I bought a Poison cue 150 euros. Beautiful thing but has a 13 mm tip and I used to playing 11mm. Im shocked at how ridiculous the spins are to make because sometimes hitting it hard it will not draw at all... Made the tip more round and works just a bit more but I think pros play with smaller tip and plays way better isnt it?
