In Part 5 of this deep dive into Lisa Feldman Barrett’s “How Emotions Are Made,” we’re going to look over some of the suggestions in her chapter on Mastering Your Emotions. Now that we understand what emotions are (and have a better understanding of what they aren’t), we can look at how to have clearer emotional signals, so that we don’t get them confused with other signals our bodies are giving us. I’ll go over these ideas and more in this video.
There are a couple of challenges with these approaches to Mastering Your Emotions, one of them being the issues of the language of emotions, which seem insurmountable, until we discuss the Circumplex, which I’ll go over in much more in Part 6, over on my channel, @simonsbookclub. Check out the video here:

In the next two installations of this series, I’m going to be speaking with Lisa Feldman Barrett directly, and looking over how I’ve understood this book and her work so far. Dr Barrett is amongst the top 1% of cited scientists in the world, and she’s about as expert as it gets in the field of Emotions and Affect. She’s been studying the brain almost for longer than I’ve been alive. Check out her book, How Emotions Are Made, here. It’s amazing stuff.

I'm also inviting you to join the Discord, where we're discussing a lot of these ideas, and more, amongst a group of really cool, smart people, all in the spirit of nonviolence and curiosity.

Saudade, one of the most beautiful words in my amazing Portuguese language!

Oh nice! It's a beautiful word. I often see this big, beautiful mural of a woman sitting on a plant (I think?) and it says Saudade on it. It's gorgeous. Can I ask, how you feel saudade? I don't mean, in what circumstances, but more like, is it only a negative feeling, or is there any positivity in it as well, a fond remembrance of things past maybe? I'm still trying to see if I get the feeling of it right :D

It's a mural in Graça (a parish of Lisbon) by the artist Mário Belém. And at the bottom is titled: “Better to be lost here somewhere than on my way to nowhere,”

I was feeling anxious once for no reason and I prayed to God asking why? I saw a vision when praying of vegetables. I have found eating a salad when feeling anxious for no reason has helped a lot. I noticed little sleep makes me very sensitive and emotional, especially to world news. Babysitting kids, I see how emotional they get with horrible tantrums if they miss their nap. I guess we never grow out of that.

When shame and trauma collide, listen to the trauma and kick that shame to the curb.

I like what you said here. I had a book club meetup on the weekend, and we got into talking about shame vs guilt, and how with guilt, you acknowledge the actions that led to this moment, while with shame, you identify with the actions. Like, the difference between saying “I failed” and “I am a failure.” I think the same idea can be applied here. When we’re aware of our trauma, and aware of the response that’s emerging from that trauma, it’s healthy to just witness the response, and to not identify yourself with the response, to not label yourself as what you are, or who you are, but to just be kind to the process that’s unfolding.
