In this video I'm going to show you how to match knockdown texture on a drywall ceiling repair. I'll give the you tips, tricks and all of the tools needed to match your knockdown texture without having spray it on and make a giant mess with a bunch of unnecessary equipment. All while not even coming close to matching your knockdown texture. Whether you're a DIYer, Painter, Handyman or Contractor. On the ceiling repair project I had to match a heavy knockdown texture on the ceiling of a condominium in cocoa Beach Florida. First I applied the joint compound with my knockdown texture sponge. Next I left the knockdown texture dry for 10 minutes before knocking it down with my 12 inch acrylic knockdown paddle. Now the new ceiling repair texture is ready for a quality primer and paint!

Great video I need to order that sponge I picked up a sponge at Lowe’s and it worked but some of the globs were a little thick I noticed when I drug the ceiling. I have been doing painting and remodeling on the side for a long time but never really started honing my texture matching skills till now. Trying to match knock down at my house recently.

Hi I just did a knock down repair .I blended most of the room really good with my hopper. But one area where I patched a crack i can see my patch outline a bit. Is it because I didn't float out wide enough with texture or because I didn't prime it first? Will it blend in better if owner paints it? Thanks in advance.

Hi, husband did a knockdown repair that doesn’t look good so I searched on RU-vid and found your tutorial. Now that we know what went wrong, I wonder if you recommend sanding off the repair to do it correctly? I wonder if doing it correctly over the repair will result in a bulge or - heavy spot that is equally noticeable?

Question for you I did a knockdown texture on a ceiling that had a lot of drywall paper cuts and an old bad drywall repair. After the knock down and paint has been applied, I can still see some of the brown paper from the drywall coming through. The ceiling doesn’t look good like the others I did in this project. Can I Just apply a heavier knock down over the existing knock down to fix this? The knock down I did was a light application. Thanks for the tips and tricks. I am a construction girl in training that does my own rehabs and flips. 😊

Paul thanks for your tutorial, will buy tools needed, renting apartment, don't like painters coming to my place, some areas of my textured ceiling shows cracks, I want to fix those areas and match knockdown texture on ceiling doing it your way, will ease at it, also I have long diagonal unsightly crack on wall, need to see how to repair, browsed all tutorials, yours is best, short and to the point.

Thanks for this video. I had two spots I had to do before repainting ceiling after we remodeled kitchen and I was stressing how I was gonna match the knockdown without hiring someone. Your way worked perfect!! I took regular sponge and plucked some chunks out then I had old piece of thin plexiglass to knockdown.

I need to match the white color of a ceiling stomp texture. The color appears to be mixed uniformly into the compound. Is that done, and if so, any tips on the type of paint and mix proportions?

Paul, great video and just what I needed to boost my confidence. I had a toilet supply line leak and ruin a portion of the ceiling in our dining room. Hi Victor, Let the texture sit for 15-20 minutes. Maybe a little longer if you’re texturing over a painted surface. Also, apply very light pressure when knocking the texture down. I hope this helps, -Paul

Victor Pistone ... you may be pressing too hard with the knockdown tool, or your angle is wrong. Try practicing on a piece of drywall first. Hope this helps.

I done your technique a few times and it's worked great, thank you. Can you or have you used hot mud to finish the repair quicker? I've been temped to try it but most homes I've been in lately weren't ones I could really "experiment" on.

That's awesome IJ!👍 I have tried it. I prefer using the all purpose for the texturing part of a repair. Simply because the consistency of the hot mud is constantly changing. If you use a heat gun or put a floor fan on the new texture it actually dries pretty quick. Are you a contractor? Take care, -Paul

Hello- like the videos! I have a 22 by 48 piece of ceiling that I needed to cut out and put back in ( to access some pipes). I have some cracks between the new board and the knockdown ceiling that is in place . Should I use tape to cover those cracks or just fill in with compound , let dry , and then put the new knock down material on the new piece of board? Thanks much Rob

Yes, I would maybe add a few drywall screws first to minimize any movement first. Then use FibaFuse drywall tape to make this cracks go away.

It was a water damaged ceiling area that I had to cut out, add a furring strip, tape, mud and texture with the knockdown texture sponge. What's going on with your ceiling? Why doesn't anyone show the final product after drying and paint? We had someone come repair our ceiling and it doesn't match the rest of the knockdown. I'm not sure if there is no such thing as a perfect match but I would like to be able to see final results from some videos so I can compare.

This only works with big chunky knockdown. The sponges are no good for small portions as you always get the big chunks.

Samson, No a hawk doesn’t quite work for matching a sprayed on knockdown texture. Way more control with a sponge on repairs. That’s very helpful, but what color of paint do I paint ? Beacuase my ceiling seem like 2 colors, white and grey

Hi Nina, that is most likely an actual “ceiling paint” which has some black added to the white. That is what gives the ceiling paint a grayish hue. But just know not all ceiling paints are exactly the same mixture. So what you’ll need to do is feather the new paint into the existing paint on your ceiling. I hope this helps. I have a small area in the kitchen that came loose in the corner above the pantry. I tried to patch with drywall compound but the damaged area just got bigger, existing knockdown is just flaking off. I stopped for fear of making it even worse but it's looks a mess now. Should I just enlarge the area of loose stuff back to solid ceiling and try the repair again per your video??? Thanks...

I wish I had one of those sponges. I make a piping bag from a zip lock baggie but my blobs are usually too big and it doesn't blend well with the existing knock down.

Hi Kitty, the best way to match a swirl texture is to roll on thinned down joint compound with a 1/2” paint roller cover. Then take a texture or wallpaper brush and make the appropriate swirl size over the repair. I hope this helps you. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! Good luck! -Paul

i have matched the texture but struggling to match color...i got some flat white ceiling paint and it did not match. then i got zinsser paint and primer in one, still did not match. is it possible the original knockdown was just white drywall mud and never painted? the compound i used dried a bit gray. should i have used compound that dries white? thanks

Paint on the ceiling is old. You cannot recreate a perfect color. As it ages it gets dirtier and the new paint no matter what should look whiter. Only option is really to paint the whole ceiling.

Where do you get a knockdown texture sponge? Lowes, Home Depot, and Menards only have roller sponges for painting. My Ace hardware had a sponge similar to the one you shown but it didn't look exactly the same. Thank You

Do you have an opinion on the best way to repair a really bad ceiling patch? I'm talking about a patch that is far beyond re skimming. Would you try and grind the area down, or remove the patch and start over?

@@PaulPeck I agree with you there. The patch I'm talking about is 2 by 3 and looks like a severe burn scar. The guy tried to match a fine knockdown texture with a hock and a trowel. He was not qualified to do the job to begin with, but he also didn't wait for the mud to set up before he tried to knock it down. In the process he also got into the tape seam, about 4 to 5 feet long causing a large crack in the joint which also needs to be repaired now. All this stems from him removing a soffit in a customers kitchen. He also did not texture the walls with orange peel where that connected to the walls to match the wall texture. Instead, he skimmed over the repaired spots on the but I did a very poor job of sanding it down and then painted over it leaving it smooth air bubbles and sell marks clearly seen through the paint in 3 places 18 x 18 each. The tape scene in question is around 10 feet long. I gave the customers a bid for $1,100 to repair everything. Needless to say they're not very happy and told me they would get back to me lol. They obviously think that my price is high, but there's quite a bit of repair work to be done there in my opinion which will span two to two and a half days of my time to repair correctly.

I appreciate that Brandon!👍🏻 Yes. I have. The cans don’t work near as good as the knockdown sponge. You can blend the texture way easier with the sponge. Is it possible to place kilz or knockdown over ceiling paint? Another question I have. I removed popcorn from a ceiling on an old home. I sanded spots that needed it and I painted the ceiling with ceiling paint. After 2 days several spots bubbled up. I sanded the bubbled spots and repainted a second time which resulted into the same problem. How do I fix this?

I've got a small bathroom thats got the knockdown texture just flaking away from the sheetrock in very small pieces .Im guessing from too much moisture and heat from the shower with the exhaust vent not on,can I apply a thin skim coat right over the existing texture left and re hand texture with the knockdown sponge?? Hey Paul, thanks for your videos. I need your advice and help. I've made two attempts on the knockdown. I did what you said and the first time I guess I didn't put enough. The second time I put too much. I use the same mud and sponge. Im really light on the 24in. knockdown knife, I wait about 7 to 9 minutes and it just doesn't match my existing knockdown. Either the patern is too big or too small. What do you recommend and what is my problem. Thanks again for taking the time to help. Paul

Hi A G, I did add just a couple drops of water to a mud pan full of joint compound. And that’s just to get some of the air pockets out and make it a little more creamy then straight out of the bucket. The more you thin it down the more it will flatten out. The texture in this video was not real flattened out it was probably quarter size knockdown splatters. I hope this helps. Hello Paul. I have 8 nail pops along one side of my living room cathedral knockdown ceiling that i have repaired, and now i just need to add the knockdown texture and finish the project. The ceiling is not painted and would like to match the original color of the joint compound as close as possible without having to paint the ceiling. You should've used a Zinsser124 primer instead of a 123 and when you knock it down you should always go from northwest to southeast unless you're in the mountain time zone then you obviously want to go from east to west. If you haven't figured it out by now, I have no idea what I'm talking about but I have noticed on every RU-vid tutorial, there's that one guy that has to be the know it all that says the video is all wrong. LOL Thanks for the video, I needed this info.

I notice cracking so I’m going to use your video to guide me in scraping area that is getting loose than use the knock down sponge use the 12”Acrylic knock down tool to lightly break it down prime it n paint next day Very informative thanks again. Question, I heard priming after the skim coat and prior to applying knock down texture helps with matching knock down because the wet bud doesn’t dry up into the skin as easily etc. would you recommend something like that?Thanks for all the tips!

Can joint compound mold? If so, can a little bleach be added to the water used (to thin it down when using it on ceiling for texture knock down)? It was on surface & scraped it off but mold spores do spread inward.

Md, If there’s mold in the bucket, I would throw it out and get s new. Bucket. Because the mold can continue to grow after the joint compound is applied to a wall or ceiling.👍🏻 I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! -Paul

I needed to use it & didn’t have time to get new. Used straight bleach & mixed well AFTER removing all surface mold. After I fixed area, I threw the rest away. So far, the bleach addition hasn’t affected the color or set.

How close did this actually match? Could you still kind of tell that there was a repair there? Wish there was a good after photo as the video is kind of blurry and you only show it at an angle instead of straight on.

Paul, I am trying to repair a bathroom ceiling that the previous owner did a bad repair job. Where the ceiling was repaired, the section where the drywall comes together, it appears they have the paper of the drywall sanded too much and parts are showing. I am guessing I should sand the joint in question down to where all the knockdown is off and prime it first. Should I then coat the ceiling with a thin layer of mud and then use the sponge to redo the knockdown texture look? Thanks! Steve

Paul, I really appreciate your informative videos. I have a crack in a knockdown ceiling and I need to repair it. Should I scrape the surface area around the crack smooth, mesh tape and fill the crack, and then apply knockdown texture? it's drywall, not a big crack with wise but it runs across a 16 foot room. I didn't want to apply new knockdown texture over top of all because it will never blend in with the rest of the ceiling. I appreciate your advice.
