Thanks for this concise explanation! Question: You're subtracting a quarter inch from width and from length to allow for expansion. Is it necessary to anticipate expansion for aluminum windows?

The old windows usally have room/space between window and rough framing so as long as you measure the old window CD and get same size you'll have enought room for any expansion

So I wouldnt take this guys advice as far as measuring windows when its brick. I did unfortunately and the the windows are all too big and dont fit. I now paid for windows that I cant return and have to buy new windows, costing me $2 400.00. My advice to anyone looking to replace windows is go inside take the trim around windows off and measure EACH window from outside of frame to outside frame this way the windows you buy will fit the same as the old windows. A costly lesson learned.

You probably saved me from same mistake! I assume brick siding is not necessarily going to be aligned with interior frame.

@@azizb.7561 correct, it depends on the brick layers. I learned the hard way. Just pull trim and measure old windows and get exactly same size to replace. You might have extra space you'll have to fill/frame in but atleast you know the new windows will fit exactly the same and it makes putting trim back easier seeing as it will cover the paint lines from old trim so no painting walls

@@wayneboivin7525 I believe this method would of saved me, whereas today I installed new window. However I measured the framing rough opening… and now seems on exterior there’s no space to trim out the window, whereas if I had used same measurement of old window, that would of worked better. I think I have to reorder 😢

@@calvinjohannsen6519 that's why I said measure old window from inside to get excatly the same size window. Hope things work out for you. You can always use or cut down trim for outside, it may not look the same CD as it did but atleast you wont have to reorder window

@@wayneboivin7525I have windows that were poorly installed, they’re right up against the rough opening so I can’t just measure the old window and do the same, they need more space than the initial installer gave for insulation and expansion.
