it would be cool if you could measure the angle of the roof from street view
@ClarkeLSmith
@ClarkeLSmith 2 года назад
Hi Brian, I'm reaching out to you to see if you could guide me in the right direction. Here are some specs: Roof is 9/12 roof and the rafters are 2 x 6, 24" on center. Our home is a 1940's home. It's 26' long (along the ridge) and about 26 wide. The rafters from what I can measure are about 16' long from eaves to ridge and since the attic has a knee wall and "storage space" at the eaves, there's about 8' that don't have any drywall on the rafters, and 8' that have drywall (the conditioned part of our attic) - I mention this part because of the question I have (coming lower) about load capacity of the roof. We're in the process of renovating our attic space. As mentioned, it already had drywall but we're removing it and replacing the existing (very old) batt insulation with closed cell spray foam (2 lbs/ ft2) and we'll be adding the drywall back onto the rafters once that spray foam is cured. I think we're going with 3/8" drywall - then on top of that we're adding 1/4 MDF and a few 1 x 4 pieces of trim to divide up the ceiling.... That's our plan. I know that the roof (shingles) has at least 2 layers and it's even possible that there are 3 layers of shingles.... Would it possibly cause a problem with WEIGHT adding all that 2 lbs/ ft2 spray foam, the drywall, MDF and 1x4 trim board in part of that roof (about half way on each side) given the existing 2x6 structure with the 9/12 pitch? How can I find that out? Should I be concerned? Also, in the future we plan to re-roof using metal (standing seam) and we would of course remove all the existing shingles, so the weight will lessen significantly - but would we also be able to add Zip R sheathing on top of the decking before the metal roof is installed which appears to be true 2 x 9 decking (still in good shape) and since we plan to sprayfoam under the roof, we would not be able to remove that old decking (at least not the entire thing... (maybe some pieces if they're damaged) Any help/suggestions/direction would be much appreciated and of course I'm subscribed! :) Thanks in advance, Clarke

How do you do this in Google Earth Pro? I can only get a clear look of my Roof in a 2010 image that can only be accessed in Google Earth Pro. Leaves on the trees block half of my roof from the Sat view. 2010 is the only clear view. I can only draw a straight line in Pro so this left click option doesn't seem to be in it or it's hidden in some menu.

@rogerroman2400
@rogerroman2400 3 года назад
i have a question about pricing if you don’t wanna answer it it’s understandable but if you do it’d be awesome. Just starting my roofing business in Oregon and my question is if you’re quoting a house you measure wrong let’s say you measure 30 squares but when you do the job it’s only 26 squares does that mean you keep the extra 4 squares orrr?
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 3 года назад
It really all depends on you. When I figure an estimate I try to keep it as close to the actual measurement as possible. With that being said if I under figure and need more material I never charged additional to the customer. So on the flip side, if I have an extra square or 2 when I'm done I don't return that because the profit margin in my local market is extremely thin. If I were to give advice, I would say try to get your estimate as accurate as possible but don't get them on hidden things or unknowns. That is of course excluding decking. To clarify what I'm saying is, I have seen companies try to win a bid because they are less cost based on less square footage. So when they try to get more Roofing to finish the job they hit the homeowner with a hidden surprise. Don't try to focus on being the cheapest but being the best quality! There are customers out there that will pay for good quality work. trying to win every bid can be the quickest way to put you out of business. Just an idea try to offer a no hidden fee guarantee. A lot of my Google reviews people say they we're happy that the job got done with no hidden surprises. Don't be afraid to differentiate yourself from others. I hope that helps. Happy Thanksgiving!

Is there a trick to calculate the slope for a hip roof from the ground or Google Maps?
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 2 года назад
We can just look at and get pretty close from experience. I would recommend looking up a few photos of known slopes and you might be able to kind of pick something close to what matches your roof. You don't have to be super accurate and if you're gonna air out figure something slightly steeper will get you a safe margin.
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 2 года назад
You could also download a phone app stand on the ground and put the phone angle close as possible to the sope of your roof.

How well does this method translate to a gable roof compared to your demonstrated hip roof? How about a roof with a combination? (maybe it doesn't matter) just curious
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 3 года назад
I have cross checked this method many times with measuring software. It is pretty accurate doesn't matter hip or gable.The biggest factor is as long as the pitch is all the same, or use the predominant pitch. X SF in a 2d sketch is the same however you slice it. Plug in your multiplier and you're good to go.

Great information, but with a multi peaked roof google earth's view is almost useless. The sunshine and shadows obscure 60% of my roof and with numerous peaks and valleys I have over 20 rough measurements and not being a roofing person have no idea how this information is useful at all in establishing how many squares my roof is. Are there any other free sites that could provide me with this basic information?
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 3 года назад
It only works when there is a view of the roof that is not obscured by trees. It is a free tool that you can use most of the time but not always. If the image is blurry as long as you can see the footprint you can get a measurement. If you can't get a good image of your roof and it's for you at your house, you can measure the width and multiply that by the depth. Then multiply that by the predominant pitch multiplier. Should get you a pretty accurate measurement.

Anyone know a rough estimate on costs for asphalt roof around on a dutch gabled roof around 2200 sqft in central florida? I know its tough to give that sort of info I just tend to get completely screwed on things I fix with my house. I paid around 40% more than I should have on my AC and probably 25% on my septic system. I've had nothing but bad luck in this house and now I have to pay out of pocket for my roof because my stupid insurance company went out of business in the middle of my claim and I have to buy new insurance before the 13th. I can't get that insurance until I fix the roof because the claim is open. Screw insurance its a friggin scam. stupid rich guy who owns it probably getting off scott free while all the people who paid their insurance dues fairly don't get squat and could lose their house if they don't get insurance quickly enough. gave me a whole 2 weeks to find new insurance even though i have a claim open! NUTS! Anyways any help before I request a quote would be appreciated as I can't afford time wise to shop around really and I don't have a lot of money. Hopefully I can even afford it...

@@GrandRoofingInc how would you figure this slope off of street view
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 3 года назад
If you're doing it remotely and the house isn't in front of you, you can try street view. If you can get a view of the house you have to just go by experience. Take what you know and you can multiply or divide. So assuming you can get a view of a Gable end and it looks to be a 45 degree angle which would be a 12/12 pitch. So if it looks half as steep is that it would be a 6/12 and so on. I hope that helps.
