Usage: The amp clamp meter has to be used on 1 single wire, not on a cable which has 2 wires in it! Place the clamp of the meter either around a phase wire, or around a neutral wire.

We cannot (at AC voltage) measure power by multiplying voltage and current. If we multiply them, we will get apparent power (with VA unit). At AC, the voltage phase can be different compared to the current due to inductive or capacitive load.

I did science in my high school, long time ago... So how do I measure (consumed) AC power with a clamp multimeter? In a test situation I need to compare variable power settings of an AC ventilator (axial or centrifugal compressor) with different outcomes of my air-thing-contraption ;-) I would be grateful for any help here!

Respectfully, aren't you grabbing at hairs here to make an kind of off subject point about power consumption? The clamp is for current draw mainly so if you see a non typical current that's all you need to point to the device as suspect. ? how different is the apparent power from what you'd read with the meter?

@2 liter His point is that what you’re seeing with the meter is apparent power, the real power is somewhere lower than what multiplying the measured current and voltage would indicate. The more inductance/capacitance you have in the circuit, the bigger the difference between apparent power and real power. But you’re right, the clamp meter isn’t supposed to be used to calculate your electrical bill, it’s supposed to let you troubleshoot problems. So the difference doesn’t matter that much in the majority of situations. It’s just something to keep in mind when measuring circuits.

Nice video! This helped educate me on how to use my Aneng ST207 Digital Clamp Meter. I have tried searching on how to measure the amps using my clamp meter and lead me to your video. As I want to measure the amps and the number of hertz on my 1.5hp inverter airconditioner, but was getting around 0.0 amps and 0 hertz. Your video has taught me to correctly find the amps and hertz by using either one of the positive or negative wires and not the whole single wire which includes both.

A perfect demonstration of what the title is. Well done. But wish you would add another clip and describe the other functions of this clamp as that is where my problem is and this tool is not showing me any reading or continuity check. Any ways thank for your demonstration of correct draw, especially emphasis of how to check only one wire at a time, to see the reading and not both (That two way current cancels each other with a net reading of zero, so wrongly user thinks this tool is not working). Thumbs upped and you have one more subscriber.

I like how you straight jump into it with no intro. Really helpful and easy to understand concept. But i would like to ask a few question: 1. How to make the adapter that you split the neutral and live wire? 2. Can i measure directly using the clamp meter at the live wire after the mcb at distribution board? Or would it be unsafe? 3. How is this of any use measuring say a line from a panel if i want to know how much power my water heater is using? I cant split the 240v wire from the panel to tank. My meter shows 0s no matter what setting i put it on

General question: On a DC clamp meter, does shielding around the wire influence the measurement?

Yes I think so. In DC mode, its the clamps which are passing small AC and creates dynamic flux from there. A shield around the cable will change the vector of the field causing errors. It won''t straight up "shield" the inner wire into an insignificant wire w.r.t the clamp, it would just change the direction so that opposing fields do not impede the wire. Similar reasoning for double shielding: one shield around the wire, another shield in relatively external environment.

I have a lot of wires in the cellar and I don't know which goes in which room. Any chance I can find out without splitting the wires? I am not an electrician but my electricity consumption suddenly spiked 57% up for no apparent reason. I am wondering if the aircon is clogged resulting in more power draw, or something else has caused this. Thanks for the video. I learnt something!

I like the idea of the shorter split extension where you can check it there rather than messing up the appliance cord. I was under the impression that you can clamp around both wires (as I've never actually used these types of meters), that is kind of inconvenient that both wires cancel out the reading..lol So what are these meters really for then? Taking readings in electric panel and other single wire leads?

A cool device to find on sale is a Kill-o-Watt plug in unit. Mine has a memory and meter function, so can run an electrical device plugged through it - to get the total average power used. Great for things that have a thermostat or compressor that kicks in and out.

For calculate the exact watt and better accuracy we multiply amps with the finest providing voltage OR after loaded voltage? Bcz there is a variation and voltage get redeem after the load and it down like 225 to 215. Kindly tell me now which voltage we will take for multiplying with the watt?

Theoretically the voltage (220V) from the wall socket should not drop after a load is added, but if you are powering a device from a battery than it will drop. In that case multiply the lower voltage with the amps.
