I work in costuming and have been told to add 2inches to the suit just incase you are layering as well vest, shirt, etc...

Another way to determine jacket length is, with the jacket on if you can comfortably cup your fingers under under the jacket that usually suggests a 'short' length. If there is room between the jacket and cupped fingers this would suggest a longer length is needed.

Thank you for the video Richard. I have two questions, you said 'within an inch' for the shoulder measurement. I am measuring 42cms/16.53". Do you mean I can use a jacket with a shoulder or 15.53" or 17.53"? It wasn't clear and I read a comment by another viewer who also asked this question. My second question is about measuring for the jacket length. You showed us to measure from the shoulder to the bottom of the zipper whereas other people say to measure from the neck to the middle thumb knuckle or the the bottom of the zipper. My measurement was 30.70" for the neck to zipper and 34.64" from the shoulder to the zipper. A big difference. Why do you suggest measuring from the shoulder? This is very important for me because as I am 5,7" tall and stocky I am finding 42S jackets tight on my stomach and the length a little under the waist, too short for my liking. However, the 42R is covering my behind which I think think from the back looks better but from the front is it too long. I have ordered so many jackets and still I am not comfortable in choosing or knowing my right size. I will be very gratefulif you can answer these questions and concerns, and I am sure it will benefit other viewers too. Many thanks.

So here's my dilemma. I haven't worn a sport coat or suit coat in a long time time. I was a 44R. Now I'm much more filled out in the chest area and stomach. I'm 5'11", 240 lbs. A 44R is definitely not right. I tried a 46 R at Target. It was too tight. A 48R was the right length but pulled near the chest area.

My head is a TV, how would I measure my hat size?

Yes , I have a question. I'm ordering a jacket, I've taken my chest measurement as shown in the vid, it's 40. That's what I sent in. On other vids I've seen chest measurements taken across the front of the chest pit to pit and not all the way around as was shown here. Which one is correct ??? Will I be getting a jacket now that's 80 inches around ???

I measured myself at 46. Went into fancy suit store, told me almost all high-end designers consider a tape measure 46 to be a 50 or 52 in their suits. So I had to try on 50's and there were only a few options. I don't get why they don't call a 46 inches around chest a 46

I'm overweight with a beer belly. My problem with jackets usually isn't my chest shoulders, but buttoning them around my belly. Instead of measuring chest under my arms, would it make more sense to measure around my stomach?

I’m not clear on what you said to do with the shoulder measurement. It likely is the most important body measurement but you glossed over it. You said something like “within an inch”, does this mean if you measure 18”, you can get a jacket that measures an inch more, seems like a lot.
