I love that he doesn't quantize the drums. That's why his music feels alive. I like to change tempos throughout a song by 1-2 bpm between sections depending on dynamics, which I learned from analyzing Mudvayne's first album and I have recently started incorporating it into writing and setting up guide tracks. If the intensity is going up, I might speed up by 1-2 bpm, and the opposite as the intensity comes down. If a drum part is fast moving and hard to play, I might slow down by a few bpm to clean it up, or drag the speed on a fast drum fill. All this stuff gets set up on the guide drum tracks and click so that it becomes part of the final drum recording. Then guitars and bass track over the top of the drums which have the slight tempo changes baked in. The trick is to not do the tempo change at the top of a section or measure, but to mask it over a couple of beats after a change and gradually increase or decrease the tempo. Check out The Patient Mental by Mudvayne to hear an example of this.

Experience is key, and being humble after all his success is priceless, thanks for the video!

I absolutely agree with him on disliking beat detective. Metal is not meant to be “100% tight.” It’s always either a little ahead or a little leaned back. 100% on the bar sounds programmed.

So happy there will be a mastering episode, too! I was a lil afraid that you would only go until "mixing". Such cool videos, thank you!

Wow. I mean WOW! Just found this gem. Man, I would have given a kidney for an insight in Mr Madsens mixing process back in 2005 when I started mixing metal albums. Thanks for doing this!

Wow, @1:30 when he said about killing spirit and personality by making music too precise I immediately thought about Angel of Death by Slayer. Listen to the drums on that awesome track and the tempo constantly shifts throughout the song... And then he mentioned Dave Lombardo! High five! ✋

I'd like Tue to answer if he has had an extreme metal drummer playing like 220 bpm+ tempos not triggered and at least mostly acoustic. He probably would have the experience to tell, because most people just seem to say that it is not possible to get a decent sound out of a kick drum on those speeds.

The widening guitar trick with the 2290, is this something I could do with stock plugins?

Mike Dixon I don't know about stock plugins (that depends on your DAW) but I use Boz/JST SideWidener for the same purpose to get a mono track to the sides so it sits better without having to be too loud

This Toby guy is in a hurry. Let them map explain what he 's doing...you want to go to the solo...the only thing I wanted to see is not in there...the leads during the refrain..
