Mixing rock drums has been a long standing passion of mine having grown up listening to rock music and metal. In this first episode of my drum mixing tutorial, I pull back the curtains on my drum mixing techniques that I've perfected and refined over the years under the tutelage of some great music mixing engineers.
This drum mixing tutorial is focused on how to mix acoustic drums with this first episode zeroing in on the kick drum and overhead microphones. We'll dive in to kick drum EQ, overhead EQ, and compressing kick drums post-EQ, with each subsequent video unraveling the steps of a full drum mix.
The first step to great rock and metal music production starts with mixing drums, and will give tremendous insight on what's valuable when you're recording acoustic drums.
The examples of drum compression and drum eq carried out in this video are predominantly using SSL E Channel plugins in Pro Tools, but the principles apply to any plugins or DAW you have at your disposal.
Audio mixing takes time to learn, but with the right insight you can learn how to mix huge drums even with imperfect home recordings.
