10:51 Hey Joel, I enjoyed this! Quick question about the manufactured surround. Are you just driving the stereo tracks in to a 5.1 submaster? Or are you using some sort of upmix plugin on those tracks? Thanks, as always!

Hey John! Not using an upmix plugin on this template. This is accomplished by bussing/routing and a calculated delay. Give individual control of how much level goes to the surrounds. Something I learned from my mix partner who has done it this way for a very long time. I hope it helps! Always appreciate you support.

Question, I am in resolve/fairlight so this may be a bit different, but I have noticed with music I still need to send a bit to LFE to hear more fullness. Is that ok to send a bit of signal to LFE on music, and would you recommend dialogue to always stay away from that or does the center channel in a theater for example have some sub built in to the speaker typically? Sorry if this sounds confusing at all. I'm not an audio expert, but trying to learn a bit for a short film that will need a 5.1 mix for theater screening. Thanks!

Hey! Thanks for the question and even more thank you for tuning in. In ProTools/Resolve or Fairlight, the same principles of mixing and panning will apply. When it comes to music, you can absolutely send information to the LFE, however, I am not sure that will solve your problem with “fullness.” Sometimes, usually when mixing source music or needle drops, you may revive a track that is lacks a general “fullness.” Often that can be solved with EQ. In that case I’d raise the mid and low frequencies. When I want to get “thumpy” and and a bit of low end to “feel” my score or source music, then I send some of it to the LFE. When it comes to dx we generally never send dx to the LFE. Just not a practice we normally do with traditional dialogue. Now that’s not to say it’s never been done before especially when you’re dealing with voices, particularly creatures or some sort of sci-fi character that also may have some sound design element to it. But yes, no dx in the LFE. I hope this helps. And one last thing, monitor at a proper SPL. This is crucial if you are going to be screening in a theatre.
