Don't you mean set it lower? Because if you set the belt pack high, and the engineer accidentally does jack the mix or channel up, you're essentially blasting your ears more than tolerable.

@@TotalEvo7 no - set belt pack high (not all the way) this way you have lots of “down” in case you need it

​@@TotalEvo7 this is an old thread so I'm mostly responding for other readers' sake. Set your beltpack or otherwise "master volume" generally higher before you start setting your levels on all the other channels. This leaves you lots of room to turn down, and less room to turn up, helping to protect your ears in the long run, and allow yourself to compensate either direction if something changes from the signal source.

Easiest and quickest way if you have a camera with a HDMI output is to get a capture card for your computer and use that like you would a webcam I guess.

MX-Q... so far it's been working well for us. Most of our team had an issues with M32-Q after the last big ios update... scribble strips were messed up.

Looks like they use a backing track for bass. I'm surprised he hasn't had bass players auditioning left and right with all the youtube/online exposure.

@@andym7333 I've never actually used IEMs, but I think they get a little EQ, but no/little compression. If they have compression it can force them to strain or be too light on the vocals. If anyone else has some insight I'd love to hear it - are all IEM mixes generally prefader mixes?

@@bobbob123ful but how do you listen to the music?? i use post caus i need to hear the effect of the pioneer mixer... but this month tried all even a bit of both un compressed and compressed so i can still hear the effects heheheh thanksss

The part a musician contributes is not and should not be isolated. Even a good worship leader that has guided an ensemble well will be able to stop directing and start worshiping. Those in an ensemble situation have to learn where their sound fits in to whole. The one who sticks out is listening to no one but themself. There is nothing more satisfying musically when everyone is doing their part. Ask any musician and ask yourself when you’re back there mixing and you think, “Man, that’s just fantastic!” My experience in church as a Worship Leader, singing harmonies, and playing bass guitar, leads me to a different mix for each situation. For many years as a Worship Leader we couldn’t afford monitors so I learned what I sounded like in that room. I had to hear the entire sound from all instruments and voices so I could guide the levels for each. As a choir director, when using tracks we had to hear them and not drown out the choir in the house (medium-size room 90’ square). This is a very difficult balance to maintain. If only the choir could have in-ears! My harmonizing is highly dependent on listening to the other vocalists, especially the lead singer for a song. My timbre, volume, and style change with each person singing with me. I was trained to sing in a choir that used no sound reinforcement. My college experience in vocal music was always in an ensemble but with some solo work. I must admit that I can’t sing with in-ears as I’ve had decades of hearing myself in the room. Perhaps if we had a proper room mic that might have been different. As a bass player its me at the highest level, followed by a bit of drums. I stand right next to the drums so I need to hear me and then mix in a bit of them and rhythmically I must follow and feed off what he’s playing. Next is lead guitarist, rhythm guitarist, horns (to hear trombone playing bass part), keyboard/piano, and a bit of the vocals. In a church setting, it has been necessary to turn down an person that’s singing/playing “a bit off” to avoid the distraction. There were times in the past I’ve had to stop singing/playing because I just couldn’t do well with the distraction. Fortunately, the last 15 years of playing has been with very good musicians that know how to work as an ensemble. So, again. It’s personal and based upon one’s experience.

As a singer, you can't harmonize properly without hearing the lead vocalist. As a instrumentalist, regardless of instrument, you listen for subtle cues to dynamically change the way you play, whether that be getting a touch louder, inject more energy into the music, get soft, or drop out completely. Some of this can be scripted and prompted (which personally I don't love, but keep folks on the same page), but a band sounds tight because they listen to each other. Most musicians do not play strict parts that don't vary from take to take, so listening is even more important to hear when it gets too busy, to identify the lead instruments, to not play, to focus on being part of the rhythm, to put in a tasty fill, to inject countermelody, etc. The hardest thing to teach musicians is when to NOT play and if they can't hear each other, they'll never be able to tell when to NOT play. So in short, harmony, dynamics, sharing the sonic space and unity are the reasons why it's important to hear everything.
