After shovels of cement in would of added bit of water to let plasticizer mix through before adding sand after so u don’t get dumplings rolling around then be patient
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder 2 года назад
If it’s too dry you would of added water after the cement went in but this had just the right amount of water in it. If I’d have added water too soon it wouldn’t have mixed up as nice. I see where you’re coming from though as once you get the balls it’s hard to get rid of them!

That is one giant mixer buddy. Even with 16 shovelfuls of material it was like a little ball of mortar in that giant chasm of a mixer! I was thinking of buying an electric mixer for DIY use. Are they fine if used in smaller batch mixing and taking my time?
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder Год назад
Yea in this mixer I can fit 40 shovels of sand so you can batch some huge mixes up. Also when you mix a large batch you can get a lovely mix. If you had an electric mixer it would be no issue for you to make a small mix, I’ll do small ones if I don’t need much mix

I hope your mix is better than the camera work! Most of the footage is focussed on you. You don't actually say how much plasticizer to use nor show the consistency of the mix as you pour the water into the mixer. Some of those spades of sand going into the mixer looked well under weight. Sorry but gave up on this one.
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder 2 года назад
Hi Alex, this is just a general video to show doing a mix. I didn’t focus on how much plasticiser as it varies so much between different brand as to how much you use and can also depend on the quality of your sand as to how much plasticiser you need. I don’t heap my sand too much as you’ll never match the cement shovel fulls otherwise. This is my method and I know other people will have a far different way to mine - but as long as it makes a good mix that is the key!
@paulohlstein2236
@paulohlstein2236 Год назад
@@SamDaviesBuilder Assuming that you made the video for amateurs (like me) that need instruction on how to make mortar you should tell us precisely how much sand in gallons or liters, how much Portland cement how much water and how much plasticizer and the brand of the plasticizer. Watching you shovel sand and mortar is not helping me.
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder Год назад
@@paulohlstein2236 this is how I was taught. If you listen to the video I say the amount of water depends on how wet or dry the sand is so it’s not the same every time. Also how much water would depend on how stiff or sloppy you want the mix. Amount of cement is just a ratio so it’s 1 part cement for every 4 parts of sand - if you can’t learn off me doing it from a shovel you can use buckets, so 1 bucket of cement to 4 buckets of sand. Plasticiser will differ as to where you are in the county and what you can get hold of.

The febmix bit i was hoping to learn from but from your very useful comments and replies from your other videos regarding sand wetness, dry blocks, clamp or class b bricks, its a judgement call. Ive done well so far by just reading the instructions on the tub! Ive only done hand or liger board mixes but a mixer for half an hour is way more than i thought BUT when we did the Concrete block destruction tests the longer dryer mixes (then cured in water) were like iron! Ive done a few single skin practice walls now using salvaged bricks where the mortar course is mirror smooth and stronger than the bricks! Practice practice. The current crop of 'builders' in the north could do with your videos because i can drag my van vault key down their mortar and it goes 2-5mm deep! They are builders. Not brickies! (B.S artists more like!) Do you have a video on pointing? Repointing is an ARSE job! Is rhere an efficient fast way and just to see the skill involved would be very useful. Cheers!
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder 2 года назад
Honestly some of the mixes people use are terrible and it makes the job so much harder. People put too much feb in most of the time that's why the mortar is so soft so you can dray a key through it. I will try and do a video showing how little feb I try and put in a mix, I always put as little as I can get away with without it being a poor mix. As there is so many different types of feb (plasticiser) out there it is always difficult to have a rule of thumb as to how much to put in as they do seem to be different strengths depending on the brand
@SamDaviesBuilder

Will do a video on repointing as soon as I get a repointing job :)

@RedwolfDogrocket 2 года назад
The loudest braggard builders always have, if you look around at the sites around here (wrap around lean-against extensions) a bottle of Magnum by the mixer 😃 It used to be Fairy Liquid but times are tight! If you could do a layered comparisson say 3 courses thick. too much. just right. not enough or zero. washing up liquid. And how you make it mirror smooth pointed and then scratch it with a tool showing resiliance or lack of.
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder 2 года назад
@@RedwolfDogrocket that is a good suggestion! I may give that a go at some point and do a video. One thing to note too is that how to do a proper mix is lost on some people as if they’ve been an apprentice on a building site with a silo (ready mixed just add water) then they will never learn how to mix up from scratch properly

Not a stupid question. It’s building sand. The best we can get round here in West Wales but we don’t get much choice. If this sand was in England you’d probably call it sharp sand as their building sand is much better quality!

You should always gauge your mix with bucket so you always get right amount of cement and sand..for perfect mix then its same amount every time your not to old to learn young man also its same strength and colour every time, I've seen people big shovel of sand and not the same when putting cement in , so your getting different mix every time.
@SamDaviesBuilder

I only gauge my mixes on brickwork. My shovels are always even. I do get what you mean about people putting huge shovel fulls of sand in and then a tiny shovelful of cement but I never do big shovel fulls of sand. A beginner can’t go wrong if they gauge it.
