To the novices out there trying this with play sand, I recommend sieving the sand first to get any large bits out. I had a few small pebbles in my sand that drew streaks down my finish which look bad. I just tried this on a ceiling closet using a sack of play sand I got from Lowes. I was satisfied with the application as it was going on. My hand was inconsistent from start to finish because it took some time to get the hang of it. All-in-all, I'm satisfied and really glad I did it. I really prefer the sand look to various types of skip finishes that lack sand, because I like the earthy texture, coarseness, and the way it encourages more rough and natural looking shadowlines.

Great video! I need that done to part of my walls because of water damage. Does the texture need sanding before prime?
@AnythingOutdoorswithSteve

Can you use the texture mud the same, or does it have to be the joint compound? I figure texture mud may be thinner. This is going into a bathroom, so has to be moisture resistant.

Im excited to try it out ! I see silica sand is used but what exactly did you use? I see the bag from home depot and it comes up as play sand is that correct?

So after the 1st swag (in any direction with the trowel), how long till u “knock it down” from opposite direction? Is it immediately after you dab it on the wall? Or do you wait a few minutes to let it “sit”?

Paul, I am repairing a "plastered" (1950's) ceiling with drywall where I have patched bad spots with drywall and joint compound. Noticing that plastered areas are much slicker than joint compound, will this skip trowel method with joint compound work over both the plaster and joint compound in equal fashion or do I need to skim coat the entire ceiling with joint compound? Also will pool filter sand 20 grade silica work? Couldn't get link to the sand you sell to work (

RE: sand questions below, we always used silica- sand. it has sharp edges and "skips" better than smooth sand (like "play sand"), seems like. Wish I knew where to get some in the Philippines, now :-(
@PaulPeck

Hey TJ, so true. I never use the play sand. Do they not have silica sand there in the Philippines? Thanks for watching and subscribing my friend!😎 -Paul

@@PaulPeck Almost NO "ready made" building products in Philippines (so no silica sand, only "your choice" of local geological sand.) Construction is rarely gypsum-plaster based, I think the extreme humidity + aggressive termites (so no wood-frame construction + "sheetrock") is probably WHY. I'm trying to figure out if I can "texture" with nearly 100% cement and a little - - river sand(?). Maybe do a "scabby" skip-trowel cement layer with texture, then lay a skim-coat near 100% cement over it. BUT it may all fall off after a couple years. They do an AMAZING job of flat-smooth-cement "perfect" finish work here, laid over re-bar reinforced cement-block construction. But they will spend ALL DAY troweling and re-troweling 20- or- so linear feet of a wall, and then adding 100% Portland for the final finish, to make it stay in place. Beautiful, but not interesting to look at. After a while, a fella gets BORED with looking at ALL-flat, ALL-smooth walls. ;-

That was oddly satisfying to watch, thanks. I have an old ceiling with a light orange peel on it. It has a big crack and a few holes and I wanted to also change up the texture to a skip trowel. Would it look okay if I skip troweled directly over it, or would I need to skim coat?
@PaulPeck
@PaulPeck 7 лет назад
Sachou, yes, I find watching these videos are very therapeutic for some reason too. As far as skip troweling over an existing orange peel texture after you repair your cracks. Yes you can go right over that orange peel texture. One thing I always do when I'm skip troweling over an existing texture that also has been repaired is to match the existing texture on the repair before doing the skip trowel texture. Reason being is, skip trowel texture is not total coverage so you can kind of see in between the texture and a smooth spot underneath the skip trowel texture will show after it's been painted a lot of times. Hope that helps and thanks for stopping by, -Paul

Got it 1 cup of sand to half a bucket at a time. I guess just thin enough that it's still controllable ?

I''m to the point on a project that I need to texture a room I'm remodeling. Lady wants skip trowel and your video will help me get it done. I don't understand what the sand in the mix is for. I'm guessing it is to keep the trowel from getting the mud too thin? Like a "thickness gauge"?
@PaulPeck
@PaulPeck 7 лет назад
royalhawaii, Your partially correct in that sand keeps the joint compound from going to flat and sprad out. The sand also is what makes the joint compound "skip" to create the skip trowel pattern that you see in this video and also how I always do my skip trowel. There a some texture artists that do not put sand in their skip trowel mixture. Which results in more of a larger more flattened out looking skip trowel. Hope this helps, -Paul

Nobody anywhere tells you where to get sand. I bought general purpose sand from homedepot and ruined 1/2 bucket of mud. Was giant pebbles. Will roll-a-tex work?

Why one use sand You ever try spray it on with the mixer from the Bucket. I'm in Arizona and wall texture looks like leather or Alligator skin.

Good god why do people texture walls or ceilings? I’ve never seen it in a house built after about 1950 around here. That’s got to be a dying art.
@davehall3351
@davehall3351 4 года назад
2 reasons I know: give depth/character to the surface and more common to hide imperfections, you don’t need as much skill or time to spray on orange peel as you do to get a level 5 finish
