Thank you for the good explanation video. The mounting of gas spring should always be mounted piston rod downwards to ensure proper lubrication of the main seal also the extension velocity is reduced so the end position is damped hydraulically.
Gas springs from STABILUS INOX, usually sold by Attwood, have retainer clips in the heads that can come out and get lost. Stabilus does not supply replacements! These are the clips that you must compress using needle-nose plyers in order to remove the spring from the nub. Very irritating when you've lost the darn clip!
How does anybody watch this and then complain that it gave no information? It told me something I did not know which will be central to the successful operation of the gas pistons I am about to install: Mount the piston end down with the cylinder end up. If you need to be told how to screw the strut at each end to the door and cabinet (or whatever) then should you be let loose on your own with sharp tools near expensive equipment? Probably not.
In the installation instructions of a gas spring that I just bought, it says to install it with the piston rod facing upwards. Which way is correct, upwards or downwards?
Rod down, so that it keeps the oil at the bottom and (i) dampens the fully-open position of whatever you are attaching it to, and (ii) lubricates and seals the strut, which will make it last much longer.
