To mount a Synology drive to a PC (Windows or Mac OS) we first need to obtain the local IP address or hostname of the Synology NAS that holds the files you want to access. We can do this by logging into the web interface of the Synology NAS, clicking on Control Panel and then selecting Network.
Under the 'General' tab you'll notice a box called 'Server Name' that we can use in Windows and Mac OS to connect to this drive.
Under the 'Network Interface' tab we can also select the active connection and obtain the IP address to use too. This IP address is a good alternative if the server name or hostname doesn't work.
To connect to this Synology NAS via Windows open up a new 'File Explorer' window and in the address bar type two backslashes followed by the Server or Hostname of the Synology NAS we found earlier. Now press enter.
Some Shared Folders should now appear, but if they don't, try this process again but use the IP address instead.
You may be asked for a username and password to connect and use the username and password you use to login to the web interface. You can also create other usernames and passwords and restrict access to certain files and folders, but that's for another video.
Once successfully connected and you can see the shared folders, you can now map these to a local drive. Simply right-click the shared folder and select 'Map Network Drive'.
On Mac OS open 'Finder' and from the 'Go' menu select 'Connect to server...'.
Enter 'smb://' and then either the server / hostname of your Synology NAS or use the local IP address. Click the 'Connect' button once happy. Click the 'Connect' button once again and then enter the username and password for the Synology NAS.
If you have problems, visit the Synology NAS Control panel, select 'File Services' and ensure 'Enable SMB Service' is enabled and click 'Apply'.
Select the volumes you want to mount and then click 'OK' once done. You can now access this mounted folder on the left under 'Locations'.
Please feel free to ask any questions regarding this video below, please like and subscribe and watch our other videos on the Synology NAS.

Great video. Thank you. A question, once mounted to Mac finder, can I drag and drop files? Also, can I deal and drop Final Cut Pro libraries? Thank you.

Teachable nice video very concise. I have a question do you need to do a special formatting of the Synology drives for it to work with a windows and a MacOS? Thanks

Not that I know of! It uses something called Samba to translate file systems between devices.

@@techable7524 thanks. I bought Synology DS720 and works fine with both OS without any special configurations

Do you experience latency using the connection via Windows you shared? I was able to successfully connect but I am getting 1.5mb speed so a large file takes a long time. Is there anything to check to determine the poor connection speed. Otherwise, it works. Many thanks.

I am trying to edit pictures on a brand new Mac Studio, the same way I did prior on my Dell PC. I used the SMB connection as described here. While in Adobe Lightroom Classic, if I right click on an image and click Edit in Topaz Denoise, via a plug in, it takes a very very long time to open in Topaz. Not sure if you have any idea on this process, but is the SMB slower than the mounting on a PC and is there a way to make this work?

Look into something called 'Dynamic DNS'. Go to Synology main console page, then Control Panel -> External Access -> DDNS tab, then click add button and follow advice.
