This is so fascinating. Buildings 'traveling' or 'walking' at 30cm per hour. Most buildings used to be cheaper to reconstruct (or construct something else instead), but no longer.
@evanweitz5614
@evanweitz5614 3 года назад
From an environmental standpoint it's a very important change to make as well. Our habits of demolishing perfectly useful structures and rebuilding on the same site might be cheaper, but only because the costs are being shoved onto the environment. If we can move some or all of the original elements (maybe to push them together, or dedicate them to another purpose), a site can be redeveloped or densified with a much lower carbon/pollution footprint.

The reason resistance rose up was an attempt for the beaches to be protected in the name of the light house. Sadly today they are just letting the beaches erode with no new solutions like rebuilding the jetties.

I have worked at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for now 3 summer seasons and visitors are always floored at the fact that they moved the lighthouse. There are dozens of great stories from that project like tourists handing coins to the workers that would be placed on the rails to get flattened by the lighthouse or how the park superintendent and the chief project manager both "rode" the lighthouse during the first push to show how confident they were in the engineering. As it would turn out, the move would also finish ahead of schedule by about a week. You definitely did your research, good job!

The US is well known for knocking down historical sites for golf courses. So it is welcome to see that they do occasion keep some sites. I wish they would continue this programme in future.
@sergpie
@sergpie 3 года назад
The US is also the country where the most homes are relocated for preservation and/or safety. There should also be a distinction between “historic” and “old”; the US destroys A LOT of old infrastructure and buildings to rebuild, but only small percentage are ever actually designated as historic. That said, I do think there could’ve been more effort between the 40s-90s to have a little foresight before demolition.

This is so interesting. I didn't know moving heavy buildings was so common. I live in the Amazon, and in the countryside, wooden houses (either floating houses or stilt houses) are often built, sold, and then transported to its location. They are also moved seasonally when the rivers flood and dry. But then again, they are only small wooden houses that can be moved by manpower alone.

I remember what a big deal it was when the Gem theatre in Detroit was moved. The theatre stood in the path of what's now Comerica Park and to prevent this, it was moved five blocks southeast to the corner of Madison and Brush. To add to the challenge, the Gem was built as an addition to the Century Club nextdoor and it was determined that you couldn't remove the Century Club without damaging the Gem so two entire buildings had to be moved together.

About one hundred years ago, George Eastman, the founder of the Kodak camera company decided that he wanted to enlarge the central "great room" in the center of his mansion. Almost everyone told him that it could not be done without demolishing the rest of the house. One company said that they would cut the house in half, push the sides apart and rebuild the center. Eastman paid for it and they did!
