People get hung up on trying to be fluent. Like they’re being graded on a test. I learned Spanish in the street. I’m not fluent. Not even close. But I can get by in almost all settings. Now I’m in Thailand. I’m lost. But most Thais at least where I’m at speak basic English. But if I stay here to live I gotta learn street Thai.

@jeremyleonbarlow
@jeremyleonbarlow 8 месяцев назад
@@LamaTantrapa EU citizens I believe can still move to Gibraltar for work rather easily under the freedom of movement regime which as I understand it remains in place in regards to Gibraltar as part of the Brexit deal. If you are worth more than £2 million you can move to Gibraltar and enjoy Category 2 residence as a tax resident as long as you have suitable accomodations available to you via lease or property purchase. You can also potentially move to Gibraltar as a third-country national if you are Highly Skilled as defined in their immigration rules and you have a job I think. It's not an impossible place to move, but there is some red tape. Gibraltar also requires a lump sum tax of about £44k pounds a year from Category 2 tax residents as I understand, but that I believe fluctuates with inflation i.e. goes up annually. The thing that is beneficial is that you can be there 1 day a year and maintain the tax residence as a Category 2. That would be beneficial for some nomads who are living mostly on tourist visas to use it as a home base. It seems to me like the slightly poorer, slightly grittier, slightly less tax favorable, but slightly better weather cousin of Monaco, or at least it will if Spain, the UK & Gibraltar can ever fully hammer out its inclusion in the Schengen region. And like Monaco with it's French neighbors, the Spanish-Gibraltar Double Tax Treaty which was just put in place makes Spanish tax residents who move there remain subject to Spanish taxes.

The distinctions between language and culture and between high and low context cultures are very important. I’d add that the local language is the gateway to the local culture. The local language also enables exploring the host country, especially outside of the largest urban areas. It’s worth the effort.

Obtaining Mexican citizenship is getting more and more difficult. I have lived her for 17 years and if I had applied for citizenship after 5 years I probably could have passed the language portion. My Spanish is better than most expats in my area and I can converse with my Mexican friends and hired help but the test is much more difficult today and I know several fluent speakers of Spanish as a second language who could not pass the test currently. There are two kinds of expats: those who only interact with their own expat community and those who interact with their whole host nation. In order to belong to the first group, wealth is required. Then the locals will be more than happy to accommodate and get paid. Otherwise, better learning the local language. Regardless, in the long term, living as a foreigner gets old.

I know someone in Mexico, whose first language is English, but he knows other languages with one of them being Spanish that he learned, he says he makes it a point not to hang out with any expats usually because he wants to use his Spanish that he spent some years learning. If you are moving to a country where they speak English fluently as a second language to just live or run a remote international business then sure just English is fine. If you are moving to a country with limited or no English, you want to make friends with the locals, get a job there or do business locally then you need to put in the time and learn the local language to a fluent level (B2 level). It’s not hard to take an hour out of your day to focus on language learning considering the amount of hours people spend watching TV or videos on the internet everyday.

The simple fact some people calll the local language 'a foreign language' versus 'another language' or 'a second language' says alot. Anyone can become minimally conversant in a second tongue. Somehow I think the 'foreign language' crod ont be as successful integrating. That book sounds interesting, thanks for the recommendation. Some people can not or indeed do not want to adapt to a different way of life and these are the people who go to Belieze for maybe a year then come back crying. You need to be honest with yourself and assess what you really want and what you can and can not give up before you decide on anything.

For me it seems that option 4 is the only viable one for me. I'm trying to learn Portuguese because I'm interested in southern Brazil, but failing miserably. There is no way I will ever be fluent. I simply don't have the gift of languages. It's a shame because it looks like a great place to live. The cities in the south look a lot like most middle class places in the US, but with the signage in Portuguese. If I could speak the language, I could easily see myself living there. My ultimate goal is to find an English speaking country somewhere like the US but without the woke garbage in the culture. I have no idea where that might be. Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand are out of the question for sure. They're farther down the woke path than the US. The English speaking Caribbean islands are a possibility, but I don't like the thought of being trapped there if a hurricane comes along. Belize looks the most promising at the moment, but I have never been there to see for myself. The good news is in March 2024 holders of a CARICOM passport (I have Dominica) can live and work in any CARICOM country except Haiti. That opens a lot of doors.

I challenge that mindset. That you will never ever learn it. You will. Because you exist. God gave you the ability Loveclassic and you can do it. When I landed in Brasil I was very, very nerve wracked. I landed in São Paulo mind you, during spring. Very busy. I could not even figure out how to get into my rented apartment. Instead, I went on duo lingo, and walked around the mall and talked with Businesses. They helped me and I even made friends whom are Startup founders there. Yes, Portuguese is difficult to learn, but if we all kept at it, our brains will begin to form the learning muscles. Its just muscles. That is all. Exercise my friend.

Agree with most of commenters, have you gone there and lived there and taken lessons there? Start before you go visit-- Italki is a website with CHEAP tutors, your mindset will hold you back. Learning a language- TAKES DAILY EXPOSURE and study for about 1-2 years, even polyglots say that. I'm taking a language and it's been hard but at 1.5 years starting to get it. School way of learning 1 or 2x week for 1 hour isn't enough that's why most folks can't after years of study...you need more-think of how kids learned, they heard the language 24/7 in context..mom might say "do oyou want food" while holding out a spoon with food on it...ah ok "food" ....
