HOW TO MOVE TO HAWAII // AS A FOREIGNER 

Finally, a video of someone moving to Hawaii who is NOT American! My husband and I moved here about 2 months ago from Canada and it has been a long, tough journey. We drove from Sherbrooke, Quebec, across Derby Line Vermont, all the way to LA in 13 days to take a plane to Big Island. We're still having a bit of a hard time adjusting to various aspects of life here, but it is getting easier by the week as we figure out how things operate. So far the people are pretty nice overall & the aloha spirit is definitely alive. We now live on Big Island, the biggest & least populated of the main islands. My husband has a 3 year, renewable, non-immigrant TN Work Visa as a Librarian (Master's degree) and I am on a spouse, TD Visa, so I can stay here with him. I can look for work, but if I want to work I MUST fly back to Canada and apply for my own TN Work Visa as a Dietitian (Bachelor's degree) at a port of entry & come back. Decently simple process actually, just have your paperwork in order before getting to the border. It really helps that I did not work for the first 2 months to help settling in go smoothly. A 7 hour time different from home does make morning phone calls a necessary thing while you're getting set up. I imported a car here... it took 3 weeks to get here and we anticipated 7 days. The Matson website was wrong & there a a hurricane that back up shipments to Big Island. I had to have a minor symbol changed on my dash before import. You cannot import a vehicle that is financed in Canada, therefore you must pay it off before you bring it. All forms on public transit on Big Island are... not great & not all that reliable & you pretty well need a vehicle to have any fun. We ended up getting a moped day 2 so my husband could get from our AirBNB to his work... Finding housing... apartments, etc. is tough & expensive. Getting a Costco US Credit card is proving tough even though our credit in Canada is excellent; just because you have good credit at home, doesn't mean you have ANY credit in the USA. Getting mail service, depending where you are can be a challenge & everyone takes their own trash to the dump. Otherwise, so far so good. I've seen videos where people complain that Hawaii is expensive, but other than housing it is actually on par with Eastern Canada as far as the essentials go: gas, food, cell service, electricity, etc. Get a Costco membership, well worth it. I guess if you move to Hawaii from another Country, my best advice is to have a US Bank account BEFORE you come and have EXTRA money available because you WILL run into expenses you did not expect. I think I need some advices, as a not american going to work in Hawaii. I'm going to work for 6 months, I will stay with family, in honolulu but will be my first living in a place different to me, since I talk portuguese. There is places that I should avoid? I want to know dangerous places, so I can avoid. I dont drive a car, can I see beaches just walking or there is a bus that can go to many places? I live in a small country, I know traveling in hawaii will take more time than me going to the mall. And the last question, there is a big market, like walmart or target, where I can buy basic stuff?

But my question is that can I find an host family for me and then find an public school near to my host faimily? Is it possible? Because I can get a visa if I have a work or language school or something. But private schools are really expensive. So if I find a host family then I can apply for a public school or not? If I can't, will you tell me any programs or opportunities which can help me? Which doesn't take lots of money. Thank you in advance.

Ich bin erst 15 und überlege nach meinem Abitur in Hawaii 6-12 Monate zu wohnen und arbeiten/studieren zu gehen aber ich habe schon herausgefunden das selbst eine 1 Zimmer Wohnung teuer sein würde. It's lovely to visit but it's not that great to move there - for social and environmental reasons. Hawai'i is overcrowded and many native people as well as locals who were born and grew up there have to leave the islands because of how expensive real estate and rent has become :( It also has huge implications for the environment and natural resources. More Native Hawaiians live outside of the islands than on them - how sad it would be if there were no Hawaiians in the Hawaiian Islands :(
