Mega video! Full for great info! I've got a couple of questions... Did you study a bachelors or a masters in the US? When it comes to funding through scholarships, did you find your scholarship in belgium before you applied for the colleges or did you apply first and then seek scholarships? And did the scholarship include full funding, tuition, accomodation etc? I'm from the UK and had a look at the options. The one which keeps coming up is the Fulbright program, which is on a J1 visa instead of an F1 visa. This means you have to go back home for 2 years after finishing the program, hence why I want to look at other potential scholarships. Thanks again!

I heard that if you apply for lottery, your chances of entering US as tourist may be affected, which means they’ll have to review your application and may take longer than usual, so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re from a European country and plan to visit the US as tourist.
@TheLastCodebender
@TheLastCodebender 5 месяцев назад
Actually if you come from a europen country, you don't even need a visa, you can just get an ESTA :)
@MainActor
@MainActor 5 месяцев назад
@@TheLastCodebender Right and it’s a very quick and efficient process (usually within 48 hours), but if you apply for lottery, you might not be approved as quick because their system might flag you down, then they may have to intercept and review your profile manually etc, you may still get approved but it may take a bit longer cause they will have to review your application. I guess just don’t apply for lottery if you know you have an upcoming visit to the US.

That is a really nice video to understand the process. I am supposed to move US next year on Green Card and currently working as a Software Engineer in MNC with 8+ years of experience. How would be the things for me when I get there and do you want suggest me anything to improve my chances of getting job quickly?

3:50 you forgot to say that some people cannot apply (if they're born in a country that's not allowed e.g. China, India, Brazil, etc)
@TheLastCodebender
@TheLastCodebender 5 месяцев назад
Yeah good point, forgot to mention that, some countries are not eligible for the green card visa. But you can still apply to the student visa and get the H1B later

I am starting my career as database engineer right now, I am at day 4 of learning in database engineer, in your opinion, should I learn software engineering better than database engineer? I am really looking for your reply, thank you very much.

Nice vid, I already have a Canadian MSc and don't have any issues really with staying here. The market is worse though and salaries aren't as great, so I'm definitely considering moving to the US but is another MSc really necessary for Canadians? I'm not sure.
@TheLastCodebender
@TheLastCodebender 5 месяцев назад
Yeah Canada is a bit of an exception, I think for canadians its easier to move to the US. I know that US companies hire students from University of Waterloo for example and that's pretty common, but I am not sure which type of visa they get. So to answer your question, you might not need another MSc, I would just check the visa situation specific to Canada directly.

Do you need CS degree to standout in the job market? I am planning to get a programming degree which doesnt need the unnecessary advanced math, more practical on how to code. How should I make myself relevant? Or should I get my math up to get more «fancy» degree. Both give same job essentially.
@juanblockman9924
@juanblockman9924 5 месяцев назад
Yup math is the way. There too many programmers, not many engineers.
@ekay6566
@ekay6566 5 месяцев назад
Yeah, but whats the point if both perform the same job?@@juanblockman9924
@TheLastCodebender

CS degree helps for sure, but I would say it depends which degree and from which university you get it. If it's a good university where a lot of companies hire from, then it helps if you have it. Otherwise, a bootcamp could be just as effective, but here again, if you go for a bootcamp, choose the one where companies hire from. You can check on Linkedin, the people who recently graduated from that bootcamp/university, where do they work now, this will give you a good idea. About math, if you go for web or mobile development, you don't really need it. You just need to be a good problem solver, but math itself is less important. If you go for data science or any other field that relies on math more, then you need to get the math skills for that

Hey man. Is it not possible to join a US company in your home country and attempt to get a transfer? I’m 31 and I’ve already done a postgrad, I don’t want to have to do ANOTHER masters. I also know people who have transferred so I don’t think it would be that difficult (especially seeing as I’m from the U.K.).

@TheLastCodebender 5 месяцев назад
haha yeah i get you man, another masters has advantages but obviously its a significant amount of time. About transferring if you work for US company, that's definitely possible but from my experience its more rare. It's easier to transfer from the US to a European country, but the opposite is much harder. It makes sense because from a company perspective, they just have to pay you a lot higher if you work from the US, so it's better if you do the same job in Europe. Sometimes, companies just have some specific needs and they need someone in the US, so they can accept a move, but its a case by case basis and spots are very few in general. You need to find a company that has a history of doing that and where there is a path to achieve it. I know people who have worked for years at a company hoping to get the move, but it never happened. You don't want to be in that spot, so better do all the research before joining a company to make sure it's something you can do. It's doable, just need to be very strategic! All the best man!

What if i get married to Greencard holder while studying? What if i seek asylum when i arrive? Will this help stay and get FAANG jobs later?
@TheLastCodebender
@TheLastCodebender 5 месяцев назад
if I am not mistaken, when you marry a greencard holder, you can also request to get a green card. From there, you are basically like a US citizen in terms of work permit, companies dont need to worry about any paperwork when hiring you so yeah it helps get a job and stay longer in the US. You can also ask for citizenship after 5 years on green card
