** NEW VIDEO • How To | Set the User ... **
Do you have an SSD drive and struggle with storage capacity from all the documents and media files you own?
Well this tutorial will solve that!!
This can all be done via two registry tweaks that will relocate the default location for new users in Windows onto a different drive or partition. Once you've logged into the new account successfully, you can then copy the files and folders from your old user's profile to the new one.
HDD's are very cheap nowadays and storage capacity is a lot larger than that of SSD's so it makes sense for us to use a SSD to boot into Windows and load programs off, and keep our personal files on a separate drive without the need to create shortcuts and browse through long paths for files and folders.
For those who are getting problems and being locked out of your account I will advise to enable the built-in Administrator account, logging into at least once so that the profile resides on the C:\ (%SystemDrive%) and then do the registry tweak(s). If you lock yourself out you will still have the built-in admin account to gain access to everything.
From your currently logged-in Administrator account open up Command Prompt with elevated privileges. You can do this by pressing the Start+R to bring the run window up, typing `cmd` and then pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER together at the same time.
To enable the built-in admin account type the following command:
net user Administrator /active:yes
Then set a password by using the following command:
net user Administrator *
Login into the account so that profile can be setup on the C:\ drive. Then make the registry tweaks at `Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList` changing `ProfilesDirectory` and `Public` registry keys to contain the drive letter of the other drive or partition.
For those who are saying you can't move the whole profile over, I will tell you now it's impossible to do without causing issues. That's because the hidden files and folders such as AppData can't be moved/copied. If you copy these over to the new profile it will simply break! However, your actual documents in the standard folders such as `Downloads`, `Documents`, `Pictures`, `Music` etc can be copied/move over.
If you open File Explorer, go to the `View` tab and on the right side click on the`Options` button, click on the `View` tab and uncheck `Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)` and check `Show hidden files, folders and drives`. Any files such as NTSUER.dat or the AppData folder need to be skipped.
Note of warning, you will lose configuration settings to apps/software/games as these are contained in the AppData folder. My suggestion is to either find the exact files that store the settings for that specified program and copy over to your new profile in hope it doesn't break, export the settings and re-import them, or failing that make a note of them and/or take screenshots and set it back up.

I tried to do it and it worked perfectly, BUT this may cause some problems installing some software (my case, AutoCAD), to solve it, it is necessary to change some other registry entries: use Crt+F to find all "Shell Folders" directories and change ALL data beginning with "C:\users\public\" to "D:\users\public\" . This will prevent future problems.

Could you explain what happens to AutoCAD when you follow this guide? I'm currently testing a new method that should keep the current user account and move it over to a new drive. However, I've downloaded a demo of AutoCAD and want to see if the problem goes away.

I'm getting this video done this week. What's taking so long is I'm using SysPrep and the CopyProfile function to slim down the Windows build so that there is no bloatware and annoyances for you all. However, the function that's supposed to this is broken, not recommended by Microsoft anymore, and I've come across so many hiccups, leaving it in place would unfair for everyone watching the video to have to deal with them too. To cut a long story short I'm modifying the registry and then making a script which will do this automatically for everyone, if you choose to use the script(s). Else otherwise the new method with SysPrep I will be showcasing soon works amazing on clean builds. Stay tuned Sonic

Surge, This really needs a revision. I'd advise taking it down and fixing the title, twice. You call this 'How to How to [sic] Move A User Profile ...' - but this incorporates the New Revised Method of teleportation, not the traditional Star Trek method: you're duplicating, creating a new user and destroying the old. The traditional (Star Trek) method of teleportation is to MOVE. The trouble with your method is that you can't use the existing username (since it already exists) and so you must create a new username. You can't then easily rename the new username to the old one because it just changes appearances, retaining the folder names of the new username underneath (fiddle with those folder names and you'll be set upon by dragons). A tacky setup then. How about re-titling this video to something like 'How To Set Up And Copy An Old User Profile To A New Disk'? That'd be closer to the truth, and save a lot of people seven and a half minutes.

I'm planning on doing this video this week. Enabling the build in Administrator account is the workaround, but enabling it on the system drive. You'll understand it when I demonstrate it.

When you move your documents from the old location to new one, don't CTRL+A (select all) your entire Users folder as you will copy hidden files and folders that are for your old user profile, and this will corrupt the new profile if you replace with different ones. The best thing to do is to CTRL+click each folder and then cut and paste to new location. That way you are selective copying.

Hi Surge. Initially I thought this was a great idea and would resolve my issue of having a small SSD and creating profiles on my 2nd HD. However, I did further research and learned that maybe this isn't a good idea and can cause future issues with system upgrades, updates, and other system errors. I read this information on Microsoft and 3rd party sites advising against it and to only use this tactic in a test environment. They suggest only moving the Quick Access folders to a separate drive. Have you read this documentation as well? Is your process a work around for that?

Great Video, simple and best solution I found on RU-vid. Stick to window user solutions and forget about Call of Duty. Yet, programs don't migrate from one user account to other!
@TheSurgeNetworkTV
@TheSurgeNetworkTV 6 лет назад
When you mean migrate, do you mean the program looks and behaves the same way it did on the old account on the new one? If so, this is normal as the AppData folder is not copied to the new profile/user account and this folder contains all the settings for programs and apps. See my reply above to Teri about making note/exporting settings so you can re-import them later and/or copying individual files from the old AppData to the new one, such as configuration files etc.

@TheSurgeNetworkTV
@TheSurgeNetworkTV 7 лет назад
UK Vapours It would probably most likely break the links as there is lot of hidden folders that become linked to a user profile. Even if you move the folders to a new location the program will have registry settings and its own configuration files telling it where certain folders and other files are located, and trying to update these would be a nightmare. It would be safer to reinstall the software even though its a long winded process.

The best solution I have found before carrying out the tweak above is go in to each program/app and export all the settings/make note of them and save so that you can import them again later on. The entire process needs to be clean as possible which is why I I've done this tutorial a more long-winded way, otherwise data corruption or computer misbehaviour is mostly certain. In the tutorial I make a new user account and the reason I do this is because all the programs and apps are generated when the user logs in for the first time. If you were to copy the AppData folder from the old account to the new one, when you open a program on the new account it will ask "what is this data you've given me?" and of course you will get a complete mismatch of files pointing to different locations, hence why nothing will work. There is talk of using XCOPY or ROBOCOPY to copy the AppData folder but their main limitation is that it won't copy open files, so you can't guarantee that EVERYTHING will be copied. Though I don't recommend doing a bulk migration of the AppData folder I couldn't see too much harm in making a backup of the AppData to a sensible location and copying/moving individual files from the backup and overwriting the files inside the new AppData folders on the new account. A good example would be backup and restoring the Microsoft Word template found here > C:\Users\YOUR-OLD-USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dotm and placing it into the new location of > D:\Users\YOUR-NEW-USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dotm

When you say it wasn't downloading, was Windows updates not downloading the latest build automatically? My user account and registry entries were still pointing to the my data drive and I checked to see that I was definitely running 1909. I wish this was actually moving the folder. It's just creating a new profile and then copying surface level stuff into it. I want all my settings and registry, programs, etc. to work the same. What's the actual reason I can't log into the new temp account and then copy the entire old user profile folder to the new location? Is it because of permissions? (meaning if I booted into Linux it would let me do it) Or is it cause of corruptions in the user registry? Thanks.
@TheSurgeNetworkTV
@TheSurgeNetworkTV Год назад
I wouldn't recommend it because some files have user name specific associations so when programs are looking up for files with your new username and they've been replaced with your overwritten files from the old account. This will most likely cause issues.
@joeshmoe000
@joeshmoe000 Год назад
@@TheSurgeNetworkTV Thanks for responding. What if you actually just use the temp account so that you can fully copy your entire original profile over, or stuff is "in use" or permissions? Either way, if it doesn't work I'm just going to use a symlink junction again. I did that a long time ago on another system. It works great, but you have to boot into a separate windows OS, copy the entire folder (inc hidden, system files) , and execute mklink command. That lets you create a real true shortcut so even the OS thinks that it's still in C:\Users, but it's actually D:\WhateverYouWant.

I'm currently writing the blog up now going through the entire process from start to finish. I've had a look on my own personal PC and if you were to copy the AppData folder to a new location you would indeed break most programs because they have specified paths that the programs are looking for. This is why making a new account is an important step because during the setup it will generate folders for all of the programs you have installed based on the account you're signed into.

@TheSurgeNetworkTV
@TheSurgeNetworkTV 2 года назад
I wouldn't recommend moving the Program Files and ProgramData directories because you won't benefit from the SSD speeds. I use my SSD for the operation system and programs as I want them to open the quickest. This guide is for relocation the users profile directory to another drive. User profiles are often bulky and this makes in perfect for storing on HDDs and off the system SSD. You can however install most programs during the installation stage and select the HDD rather the default location. This is how a lot of gamers install their games as SSDs soon fill up and they aren't cheap when comparing the price of traditional HDDs in the terabytes.

If you've created a new user account you ideally should be going back into the Windows Store and re-downloading the apps. Some of the apps on Windows are system-wide meaning they are installed no matter what account you're on. However, there are also user apps which are located in the AppData folder, and like I've mentioned to others I don't recommend copying as it causes problems.

Is it reccomended to have your user profile located on other drive than the system drive?
@TheSurgeNetworkTV
@TheSurgeNetworkTV 7 лет назад
Luboš Kadeřábek Well technically you could keep your user profile on the system drive like default even on an SSD drive and when you work on large data tasks such as video or editing etc. you could the keep the larger files on a separate data drive. However, when you use the file explorer to browse for files, having multiple shortcuts would be messy as you'll confuse yourself when folders are. Having everything in central place keeps your files more organised for your own sake.

Also, consider changing your channel icon as RU-vid puts it in a circle, and the flash in a circle is a fascist symbol associated with the British Union of Fascists and the Singapore PAP, unless that fits your political views.

So once changing the the Users location in Regedit, I make another account where the User folder will be in /F, then I simply copy and past the old User folder to the new account, then delete the first User? Does everything from the first user save to the new one? Will my desktop look the same, have all the same desktop settings and control panel settings?
@TheSurgeNetworkTV
@TheSurgeNetworkTV 7 лет назад
Potominkus When the change the drive letter in the registry, the next time you make a new account a folder is created on that drive/partition. In your example this will be located at F:\Users\Your_name. Once the new profile has been made you need to go into your old C:\Users\Your_name folder and cut and paste each folder you would like to keep and paste it Into the new F:\Users\Your_name folder. Finally logged in as the newly created user profile go to PC settings > Accounts > Family & other users > Other users and select the account you wish to remove and click remove and click Delete account and data. Don't worry about losing any data as you've already moved it to the new drive. er will created on the new drive (drive letter in your example).

@TheSurgeNetworkTV
@TheSurgeNetworkTV 3 года назад
The steps you should have taken are: Make the Registry tweak and set it to the new drive, go to Settings and make a new Administrator account, then login to the new account so that it creates the Users folder on the new drive, then you should have copied the files and folders from the original user profile found on the 'C' drive to the new destination on the HDD where the new user profile folder is. Once your happy you can log in and out on the new user account and that your documents are all in tact, you can safely remove the initial account that is stored on the SSD drive ('C' drive) under Windows Settings > Accounts > Family and other users.

Sorry to break it to you but this is a terrible idea... As soon as you want to install certain Software, such as DirectX, the programs won't find the needed DLLs... There are probably some other Problems with this, that's just the first hickup i noticed.

I have had no problems with any software using this method. I have tried audio production software, video editing software, AutoCAD and non of them have had problems. If you are referring to the AppData folder this will be freshly created when you login into the new account for the first time after making the Registry tweak.

It's nice , but can I do this without having to delete my first account ?
@TheSurgeNetworkTV
@TheSurgeNetworkTV 6 лет назад
gggggggggggggggg5262 No you would need to make a new account so that the AppData folder containing program data is linked properly. Also migrating/moving a user's entire user folder including the AppData folder doesn't work as the links would be broken.

Chuck H. Are you on about the ProfileList registry entry?
@CGStudiosYoutubeChannel
@CGStudiosYoutubeChannel 7 лет назад
Yes thats the one
@TheSurgeNetworkTV
@TheSurgeNetworkTV 7 лет назад
Chuck H. Well considering the ProfileList registry folder drops down and has important registry settings inside for every account on the computer, including the built-in Administrator and SYSTEM account, it's quite worrying how your computer is still working... Only thing I can suggest is reinstall Windows and backup your documents to a different device and copy them across later into the new profile in the newly located 'Users' folder.
