How to multi material print ASA and TPU in one part on Bambu Lab 3D printers

Today’s topic is multi material print on Bambu Lab X1 Carbon. To be mor exact using / mixing / combining ASA and TPU in one part.
Step by step we will design, slice and print a damper between two plates. The base and top plate are made of ASA, while the elastic part in the middle is made of TPU.
No AMS is required and the process should work the same for all other Bambu printers like P1 or A1.

Leiwand, Oida! Thanks for reminding me that the bed temperature has to remain suitable for the material of the first layer. Good explanation!

Hello. Great video. A tips for you, insted of hitting resume and pause, you kan hit close and use the meny as you want. You can even lift the table up and down ass you wish. When finished, go to homescreen and press resume. It will go back to correct tablehight by it self. Works great, espesially when embedding nuts and bolts in to prints 🙂

Some greats tips on combining these materials - I've often wondered about mixing TPU directly with another filament and while I've not printed with ASA before, I do have a roll, so I guess it's time to crack it open and experiment 😀

Hi, thanks for the feedback, I'm glad if it's helpful. Here is a short update video where PETG is bonded to TPU: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-htSE6qv_hSk.html

That's interesting, thanks for sharing this 👍 I don't use ASA but have a lot of ABS that I use when i need better heat resistance or electrical insulation, having used a bit of TPU (with good results) I'll give a try to mix the two!

You can print with overture tpu high speed or priline black or very hard TPU in the AMS (it will need a fake pla profile with tpu settings to work however) I just got a roll of overture high speed tpu myself and printed a torture test with 30 plus filament changes, all without issue. It's not guaranteed but I'd look at getting a tpu that works in the AMS before other more complex methods of multi material printing I printed pla with tpu and they stuck together very well

I don't understand why they don't allow different parameters per spool in AMS

Not only it's a useful tip, but also your video is well made and easy to follow. My only feedback is about the background music. Using automatically adjusted background music volume creates a very distracting and annoying result. Either use a consistent low volume background music, or some other creative alternative that suits your vision. But what you currently have with background music going up and down like that is not good experience for audience.

great start. proud to be one of your first 100 subs. now consider deep diving into this topic... how to do with with PLA + TPU and/or PETG + TPU -- far more "conventional" than ASA. can it work? if not, why not? and maybe test out the new overture high speed TPU; there are reports it MIGHT be able to go in AMS (success in a modded AMS). in my experience it's not very flexible. but some flex is better than no flex.

Thank you very much for the praise, I'm very pleased. Thanks for the suggestions too, I'll try to give that a try. However, I can't promise anything because, on the one hand, I don't really have much experience and, on the other hand, I just need more time ;-)

@@creativemakerat fair enough. but realize, we're in territory that NOBODY knows anything about. You're more of an expert than you realize 🙂 I'll give you an example. I was just trying to print multiple filaments at 0.06 out of an 0.2mm nozzle, and learned yesterday this is not clean and polished. the process realistically cannot currently handle this level of precision. (tested on both A1 and X1C)

I followed your advice and testet PETG with TPU. That also worked very well. Since there were also some very good suggestions for improvement here in the comments, I recorded a short update video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-htSE6qv_hSk.html. Again, thanks for your support :-)

You don't need to press "pause" again on the filament switch. Just press "close" and the printer will wait for for next instruction (filament change, continue).
@iandenton5618
@iandenton5618 4 месяца назад
Why not just use the close option on the popup (3rd button) rather than the resume. This just hides the popup while leaving the print job paused, so need to have to press pause quickly.

Why is there a purge tower at all? Just manually purge ONCE during each filament switch...
@creativemakerat
@creativemakerat 4 месяца назад
Hi. Thank you for this hint. To be honest, I didn't think about it. You can disable the purge tower, this is not needed, because enough material is already extruded when changing the filamnet manually. I have updated the project file.

I can do this exact same thing on my CR10s without all the software headaches by merely adding a layer interrupt script. Seems like more money to do more steps which in turn wastes filament by creating a purge tower which is wholly unnecessary.

Exactly, the TPU material is “simply” melted onto the ASA layer underneath.

I've seen that it partially works with some manufacturers. The only problem is that I want to use TPU precisely because of its elastic properties ;-)
@huzbum

Why is there even a purge tower here? I do this on my Ender 3 all the time. Just setup the model, add a pause at the layer you want to switch, slice with one filament, save the gcode, slice with the other filament, then splice the two gcode files together where the pause is. Doesn't even matter if they are the same temperature range, just add temperature gcode at the splice.
@creativemakerat
@creativemakerat 4 месяца назад
Well, I only have to configure the filament once and then I can use it again. In comparison, the G-code has to be adjusted for every part - if we ignore the fact that we have to add a pause with a click. It may be easy for experienced users to rewrite the code. But, as a beginner, I prefer the few modifications in the user interface. Never the less, thanks for the hint. Oh yes, the prime tower was my mistake, of course you don't need it - lesson learned.
@huzbum
@huzbum 4 месяца назад
@@creativemakerat in cases where the filaments are significantly different, it’s beneficial to use profiles tuned for them. Like my tpu profile has different retraction, and asa slightly lower flow. Without the splicing it doesn’t have the proper profile for each filament.
