How do you define the look of a brand? How do you come up with a visual aesthetic? How do you communicate those ideas to your clients? What are Stylescapes?
In episode 4 of Building A Brand, Blind's team of designers - Sang Chung, Emily Xie, and Minhye Cho, use the references they brought together in episode 3 to create Stylescapes. These visual interpretations of the brand will give the client the opportunity to see a curated collection of images, typography, and textures that will allow them to further hone the look of Hamilton's rebrand. Matthew and Ben will direct the three of them as they refine their stylescapes, and prepare for a trip over to Hamilton Family Brewery to present them to Josh and Crysten.

A note on Stylescapes:
The “Stylescape” (mood board) is the digital version of the old tear sheets in a client presentation. Because we are only using the work to educate and help our client understand the style it prefers, and then creating new and original works for the client once we understand this preferences in style, we are not recreating the already published works. Fair use under copyright law promotes freedom of expression by permitting the unlicensed use of copyright-protected works in certain circumstances. In our video, we are using the sample material for reference and an educational experience, a use different from the original purpose of the samples, to sell products and services. This is the type of use that is is permitted under copyright.

Man one thing I always struggled with when getting feedback from the Art Directors is how to note down the changes and feedback in real time while still paying attention to what's been said eg in Emily's situation. I could tell she was overwhelmed a bit. What helps me out in such situations is coming with my Gopro on such days. I place it on my desk facing the monitor and since it has a wide angle lens it captures the hands of the Directors when they're pointing at something specific. So I focus on what's been said rather than taking notes, then for clarity on the Art direction I just rewatch the recorded videos later when my mind is clear before making changes.
@fizzaiftikhar

I struggle with this a lot too. Thank you for sharing your way of tackling this issue. I also think what if all of this is being operated from home as we speak about the changes in office environment due to pandemic. In that case, you could be talking to directors or clients through online meetings. I came up with a solution in that situation as well. Screen record the call so that you can totally focus on what the other person is saying instead of getting distracted by taking notes. Then later watch the recording while you start working on the required amendments.

I frickin love the blind feedback Chris gave. Straight to the point and productive. For me, Sang's last stylescape was the best. Minhye's was also good, but it would have really worked with better photography. For me Jessica has more of a chip on her shoulder than what she picked.

1. Notice the crunch time in a creative industry. The review always happens late in the work day. The office is empty. 2. I like the integration of futur course deliverables . Stylescapes, Project management. Generally these things rub me off the wrong way, but its a fken creative way to do it. 3. Positioning full service creative agency. Positioning is critical for businesses and everything that adds to their brand statement, is great. 4. Quality, quality, quality. I really hope you get the RoI on your investments. All packaged in a format that's enjoyable to watch. Hyped for what comes next.

This is amazing! I'm a designer from Panama and is really cool because makes me feel I'm like a intern learning with you how you help your clients to create a brand or even how is the work energy in your agency! Thank you a lot for this content!

Damn Ben's comment on 16:38 was spot on! I didnt realized that is was a bit irrelevant to the stylescape prior to that comment. Then as i look and think through, Ben was right. I really loved what Emily was came up with. Keep up the amazing work Guys!

This part is a huge show of design acumen... well done guys. Truly professional the way these are constructed - I learned a thing or two about what visual keys are important when it comes to styling a brand identity, and the importance of small edits to existing images that have the power to express a lot. This shit is not easy. Great job.

I like Emily's stylescape, very bold and communicates the tradition of the Brand... And likewise the second stylescape of the third designer.. It's feels like a great direction for the Brand too... You guys are awesome so far have grown is such an immeasurable way... Thanks to the future.... Love from Nigeria

This series is really great and super helpful. Thank you for taking all this time and energy to share your process!! I'm a graphic designer of almost 10 years, but I am always wanting and needing to learn. Dope work being done!

Thank you guys for posting this! This has exposed so many holes in my creative process for my clients. I'm 100% self taught and have never had formal training in marketing and design, but have had to rely on videos and tutorials to feel my way through designing, so resources like these help me to grow and recraft my approach.
