Great speech, u said don't disclose current salary, but employer asking for current salary and proof of salary slip, in that case how to handle.

I believe most women don't negotiate because we simply lack the experience. We buy many things but we rarely have to negotiate. When we are negotiating salary, it's a very unique situation which we lack experience and skills. Thank you for your insightful and informative video.

Thank you! That is so true! The best way to get experience is to try! Research shows that employers are very unlikely to withdraw an offer just because a candidate negotiates the salary. The worst they can say is no!

I never did until I watched my husband go through a job search. The way he was so cavalier about denying low balls right off the back was a eye opener for me.

Great video ✨ I am currently going through this right now. For me, this would be my first time negotiating my salary with my current employer who has offered me a permanent full time position after being on contract. I think initially when I was offered the position on contract I didn't negotiate because I had zero experience in the role and I was afraid the opportunity would be taken away if I decided to negotiate. Now 5 months later, I have the experience, I do very well in my role, and I'm still nervous to negotiate! I think the main obstacles for me are not knowing what I should be asking for, and coming off entitled.

Begin asking your direct manager for feedback every month. Write up all the positive things that s/he says and keep a digital copy. Ask if you should improve anything and work on anything s/he tells you. Also keep track of successes and other positive feedback from other colleagues. Build your case around the value you provide. 3-4 before your yearly review, initiate a conversation about your growth and success. Say that you will be asking for a raise at your annual review. keep the conversation going until that year point and make sure you have a clear ask with a specific number.

Wow, thank you for the tips. tomorrow i'll get an interview. I will practice this. One of the reason why it's hard to negotiate salary because most of the company will ask the applicants to fill some information in the form they provide. One of the question is about our current or previous salary. Then, how to deal with this? One of your tips is we should not talk about our current salary. I always get dilema in this part. Should I write the truth, or should I write bigger salary? I'm afraid it will influence the salary they will offer, if actually they can pay higher salary but because of the experience they will pay the lowest salary. Please help this out. Thank you for your tips and sharing.

Great question. You should not answer that question. If they ask you that question in an online form that requires you to complete that form, simply fill in the amount as 0. Then you can talk about it with the hiring manager later after they make you an offer.

The most difficult thing about it is seeming too greedy/selfish, and thus your colleagues losing respect for you or thinking differently about you after making an ask.

Liz Miller Definitely. A new Chemist at my job asked for more than the most experienced person there made, and he was right out of school. He continued to argue his case, and That caused everyone to lose respect for him right off the bat.

Have you experienced people criticizing you for this or is it more of a fear? If you negotiate with a hiring manager, usually no one else will know. Studies show that a majority of hiring managers expect people or negotiate. It personally makes me see a person as someone in high demand and makes me want them more! Like anything it's not so much what you say, but how you say it that determines if it sounds rude or not.

presenting the topic itself is whats made it hard but luckily i do believe im still in the time range for this most recent offer i verbally accepted to start negotiating. i now have it in writing and am going in to sign papers tomorrow but i believe i will sit down with the owner and start this conversation now that youve given me a way to present it. they already expressed that with the way my interview and practicals went that they really wanna pull me in the door so id assume a little negotiation at the doorstep isnt going to kill anything. besides the owner has been super encouraging about being open and transparent about any concerns. i know what im bringing to the table. lets see if hes willing to pay a little higher for it

I recently received an $80k job offer with a 12% guaranteed bonus in writing. They gave me 3 days to respond, and on the second day I asked “ if they can help me out with the base”. I told them $5k more and they said they’re pretty firm in their salary offers, but will see what they can do. The expiration date passed today, and the recruiter said she hadn’t gotten an update. I’m worried my offer will be rescinded.

Some great tips here! I know I always struggle with stuff like this because I feel like I'm lucky to even get a job or get a raise and don't think that I can really get more. I think figuring out easy ways to feel more comfortable and confident is really helpful. Thanks!
@HowtoHustle
@HowtoHustle 8 лет назад
+Liz Tanonis I think a lot of us struggle with this! A study by salary.com found that 84% of companies expect candidates to negotiate! This helped me feel more comfortable because I realized that a lot of people are doing it, they just aren't talking about it.

I have never negotiated a salary when offered a job, simply because I felt just happy to get the job. I have over 10 years experience in my career field and I have been unemployed for 3 years and currently looking for work...I recently graduated with a degree in the same career path, but I'm scared to negotiate and not get chosen for the job simply because I ask for more pay...I don't want to seem desperate for a job even though I am. I'm not willing to just take any job, but I'm probably willing to start at a lower scale in my desired job. Don't know what to do :(
@HowtoHustle
@HowtoHustle 8 лет назад
That's tough. I am sorry that you are in that situation. In terms of negotiating the answer to this is to make sure you get an offer in writing before you negotiate. A written offer will have an expiration date and I would have to look up the specific legalities, but they will almost never pull an offer that has already been put in writing. Why don't you email me at howtohustleblog@gmail.com? We can continue the conversation. :)

Great video and well explained. I always have negotiated my salary and other parts of the offer. You might get it and you might not, but it never hurts to ask. It's important to remember that they chose you, you have an offer. It would be expensive for the employer to pull that offer just because you wanted to negotiate, both time and money. I have never given out my current salary and have flatly refused to answer that question. I have even pressed recruiters to explain how my current salary now, in a different role, would determine future compensation. It makes no sense.

Hi Team, Thank you fo this amazing video. I have interviewed in one of the biggest tech giant recently. They have made an offer with fixed CTC which is equal to my current fixed CTC. And they just added add-ons like options, bonuses etc. Though I do agree options in these techgiants matter a lot but not much as fixed salary because options's values may fluctuate. During the negotiation, they had mentioned the below three things 1. they cant go beyond the current offer being made 2. How much do you want? 3. tell no, we can go ahead with other candidates In the middle, HR also said 4. HR will be getting back after discussing with manager if there is anything the HR can do about the offer I still dont understand whether there is a chance of negotiation further because of POINT No 2 and point no 4 or this is a take it or leave it offer because of point no 1 and point no 3. When I say tech giant, its a big tech giant. Wht should I do? IF your answer is negotiate further, how can I make them do the hike (given my profile is very strong, i already conveyed the same to them but it dint work out). If your answer is dont negotiate, then why? and how you came to the conclusion that its no more negotiable
@HowtoHustle
@HowtoHustle 6 лет назад
You only really know if it's negotiable if you try. They want you to give a number early on because then if they meet it, you need to take it. That is why it is important to shoot high when asked that question.

I've talked to recruiters who will say the salary is "set" upfront, even before saying what the salary is. How do you approach this?
@HowtoHustle
@HowtoHustle 8 лет назад
+Kelley Robertson Great question! Recruiters tend to stretch the truth a bit. It's possible that the salary is not negotiable, but it is also possible that they are just saying it to get a better deal. For example, a recruiter once told me that the company I was applying for didn't giving signing bonuses, but I ended up getting one as part of my negotiation with a hiring manager. Until you know who you will be giving you the written offer, assume everything is negotiable.

Super informative. I am actually interviewing. I was asked what my salary requirements are and I responded with "at market". Did I just shoot myself in the foot? If so, how can I turn this around? Thanks in advance!! 😊
@HowtoHustle
@HowtoHustle 7 лет назад
No! Philosophically, this is the correct answer. However, many businesses expect you to throw out a specific number and this requires research. If you know what the market value is, don't be afraid to say it. If you don't, you want to try to get insight from someone who works at the company or in a similar role at a similar company. Sorry for the delayed response! I am so glad you found the video helpful!

What should one do if one has been offered a job that is better in many ways, but the salary is much lower than one's current position? I am willing to take a pay cut, but not too much of one.
@HowtoHustle
@HowtoHustle 5 лет назад
I think you already have your answer. :) For others considering this, there are other factors such as benefits (stock and options can be a lucrative one) flexibility to work from home, and PTO. Other reasons why you might consider a pay cut could be getting experience in a new field or growth opportunities. I would just caution anyone in taking a job for less money if they think that they would be paid dramatically under market value for the role and there isn't a logical reason.

What should you do when a recruiter says there is no wiggle room and the base price is the highest offer they can manage ?
@HowtoHustle
@HowtoHustle 5 лет назад
If they say there is none, you have decide whether or not that is a number you can accept. If it truly is not, make sure they know what your bottom number is. This way if they really want you, they know exactly what they have to do. Also if they are paying under market value or they get turned down a few times, they could come back to you. Do not bank on this though.

I give an expected number and now I`m afraid they`ll turn me down because they think I expect too much. Could you help me how possible will this happen?
@HowtoHustle
@HowtoHustle 6 лет назад
If you give a number that is too high, they will almost always tell you that you have chosen a number outside of the range. Then it is their turn to offer a number. If they do not, you can say "That's ok, let's talk about a number you can afford."

Question: I've only been at a firm for 4 months but our annual reviews are this week. I don't want to ask for a raise so soon, but if I don't, I'm definitely stuck for another year. Thoughts?
@lynnjuve4187
@lynnjuve4187 7 лет назад
Christina Hampton You can always ask about mid year raises. Ask if that is common practice and if it's not, ask at your 4 month review. Get ready for it by finding out how you are doing and what you can do better. That way you have already proven yourself and your boss won't be surprised by the salary conversation.

I went on an interview 2 weeks ago, (had to interview with 3 people) took 2 tests since and have been called back to interview with 3 more people. During the last interview they asked my last pay and bottom pay, I panicked and said a lower number. I'm not willing to accept that number. If I make it through next rounds, If offered the position, how do i counter a low ball offer? Is it too late at this point to negotiate? Please help!!!
@HowtoHustle
@HowtoHustle 5 лет назад
I am so sorry that I didn't reply in time! For others who are in this situation, it depends. If you say a very low number and you really can't afford it, then you won't be able to take the job anyway. You want to try to avoid going back on what you said, but if you realize you have made a mistake, go back and prompt a discussion with your recruiter or point of contact right away.

It can be much harder to negotiate an hourly wage than a yearly salary. If you have already asked, it sounds like it might not be negotiable. Typically it is easier to negotiate a salary because they will give a you an offer in writing which isn't always true of a job that pays hourly. Don't forget that you can work your way up or look for another job once you have something that pays the bills.

@HowtoHustle
@HowtoHustle 6 лет назад
I probably would not. Plan for your next review by making sure you know what success looks like in the role. Ask you manager for feedback on your performance so you know you are doing a great job. That way when you ask for a raise, you will be more likely to get it!

It seems they really want you to say what you want before they hire you, I already gave out my minimum mistakenly. I want to try to get them to offer the job then negotiate more, what can you say to postpone the question of salary until the job offer? Also a side story you may like, at one job they flat out asked me what was the bare minimum I would take I was caught off guard this woman was a tough negotiator. She said x to the penny I was insulted, I felt rushed & took the job later I told the recruiter I respectfully decline I can not work at that price. I got a higher offer, but the insult of them trying to get me at a bare minimum never did sit well & I declined.
@lynnjuve4187
@lynnjuve4187 7 лет назад
Good for your for seeing that experience with a possible employer as a bad sign. Many companies need to try to get you for a little as possible, but the way that they go about it tells you a lot. As far as postponing the question, I would say that you would really like to be paid market value and would like more time to do research about how much that is. At some point they are probably going to make you say a number so if possible find out what other problem there make. Glass door payscale and other site are great Resources for this.
