It ain't pretty but it worked... Today we do a little bit of work on the Jumbo Sherman. Trying to separate the upper haul from the lower haul in order to tac in a support brace. If you can think of a better way we could have done it with everyman tools let us know in the comments. Would appreciate any suggestions.

The three spalling shots are from a HEAT round. The spall broke loose from where the base of the probe hit. The other hole you pointed out is the SABOT penetrator melting the metal as it comes through.

Weld you a heavy piece of angle iorn on inside of hull that your lifting off of. I'm sure you've got old plate steel laying around that you can cut to use as cribbing under your jacks. As there's no wood going to stand up to that amount of pressure without either crushing the wood down to point it actually splits as you have seen. Then get a piece of plate steel to spread load across the top that your lifting, and use two jacks to evenly spread the whole load out. You might also figure about where you can burn a hole in your top plate that your using to lift top, and get you a brace in there to support the upper hull by temporarily welding it to the spreader plate you have underneath the top hull. By doing this you'll have it securely in place to do whatever you need, simply remove it later on when you've figured out how your going to build the brace that you spoke of earlier in the video. Best way to do it, that I can explain to you, without being there myself, but as this is two months old, you've probably already figured it out, and this no longer is necessary. Sorry I am late to the party. I have watched every video up to this point starting with the first video forward. You've taken on very large task just to sell it to the new overseas owners, only to have them finish what you've started here. I certainly hope you were compensated accordingly, as you've done the bulk of the real work in the restoration by doing the structural repairs.

Always cool to see what’s going on in the shop. Keep up the great work and by all means be safe.

Could have used what we call a porta-power hydraulic system. Basically it's a hand pump that connects to different size rams, depending on the job. And if you don't have the correct length cylinder, make one from a cotton picker cylinder. That's what we used to do,and it worked! And as a side note, find some big pieces of 3/8 inch thick rectangular tubing and ditch the wood blocks.

I may be wrong but the top plate on your jack should unscrew to adjust height lol. Always fun using 50 ton jacks

6x6hardwood dunnage, then you could build it up from the ground, instead of using the hull. and lift the entire side of the upper hull using 2 or 3 jacks spaced along the length of the hull.

how are you guys pachin up them ap round holes? an easy way to do it is to cut a hole out with a torch get all that rust off then use some bar stock on a lathe to match the ID then weld er up, it should save a lot of time and look good too once its welded. junk yard heavy truck axles are a good place to find good bar stock. pre oiled as well lol

more jacks under that folded down battle damage piece, top next to the ring you cut,(where old jack was) add some heat to top section of ring about a foot and half from that old welded area you gave a bit of clearance,as i noticed it had a good dip in it, you may need to anchor the bottom half of body with something heavy like another tank, dozer, tractor, and use that as your jacking platform....from .aussie truck mechanic...

I feel for you there. Sometimes stuff will shove back and sometimes it has to be cut up and welded. Still, overbending and heat on the high spots has to be worth a go?

@@restorationh.i.a7139 I watched the 27-30 spanner. Do you use phosphoric acid? It changes the rust without hurting the details.

I can't believe that you have no steel plate around with all the stuff you have there or some blocks of say 3x3x6" to use as a base for the Jack consider welding a plate on to the top edge of the bottom hull with braces so that there is some flat support for wood blocks if you have to use them. That way all the pressure isn't on a 1" strip of the wood
