Yeah, for me it feels like it wasn't my fault at times. For an example, let's say I'm fighting a zero suit Samus or Zelda who both love playing keep away. I know what they're gonna do before they do it and when I go to punish either lag or a mis-input happens and I'm frustrated. Edit: Also when people constantly go behind me (Why can't our character automatically turn around since its a 1v1?)

@@billbolt9458 the first person to WANT the turnaround mechanic? Lmao but yeah crossups are annoying ah, countering them just comes with time. What i find helps with thinking its not my fault, and maybe its just me, but i prove to myself that it IS my fault. I save the replay, look at whatever happened that I thought wasnt my fault, and try and figure out what I did wrong. Theres always something, and if i cant find it, i ask for help. It might just be me, but once i prove to myself I couldve done better, I not only feel less mad about it, but also come out of it having learned from it.

This was very helpful advice. I don’t normally get angry while playing Smash, but it does happen. Also to anyone who gets *SUPER* ticked at a specific character, I have agood stress relieving method: Step 1: go into an offline match versus a level 1 CPU of the character that annoyed you Step 2: select Ridley Step 3: down b Step 4: down b Step 5: down b (ok, at this point, you get the idea) This doesn’t completely remove the frustration, but it helps a little bit.

Awesome video! Wish I could've seen this years ago. I used to play Smash competitively and go to locals from about 2017-2021, although the pandemic obviously limited much of what I could attend during that timeframe. Stopped going to those tourneys because my life got busier + I realized that my local scene was corrupt and full of toxic assholes, so I eventually started focusing a lot more on playing online. But of course, online was always frustrating, and it didn't take much to piss me off. First, I'd get a little annoyed, then mad, then full-on rage mode. I knew this game made me angrier than anything else in my life but I wasn't sure how to fix it, and it got to the point where I was playing on Elite Smash against THAT type of Samus player (as Ganon nonetheless), and got stuck in the mindset of: "I just want to win once and then I'll leave," which of course didn't work because I dug myself deeper and deeper into a hole of misery and frustration, even though part of me knew what I was doing wasn't helpful anyway. By the time I turned the game off, I hadn't beaten the Samus once and was so pissed at the game that I ended up uninstalling it, even after I'd beaten another person before I was done. Then, I told myself that I wasn't going to touch the game for at least another month, and that's exactly what I did. I actually didn't install the game again until just last week, and I started playing again with no real expectations, and found that I wasn't getting as angry or frustrated anymore. Yes, there were still some moments where I encountered bullshit and got annoyed, but I felt much more calm than I had before. And so, this video coincides perfectly with what I've discovered recently about how to make the game more fun. I'll share some advice from my own experiences below if anyone is interested in it! Set Time Boundaries: Burnout is a real thing in Smash. I've found that the more time I spend playing, the more likely it is that I'll get frustrated with the game. For me, it's always around the two-hour mark. Remember to take breaks, and it's okay to leave on a loss! ( I used to have a lot of trouble with this one, trust me.) You could even set it up like: "I'll play in five different arenas and then be done for the night," for example. Fun Assessment: Obviously, this was touched upon in the video, but something I think everyone should give a try is "assessing" how fun a match was. Ask yourself: "What did I like about that match? What didn't I like about the match?" If you find more negative things than positive things to say about the match, then it might be time to find a new opponent. Give Them a Taste of Their Own Medicine: I'm dead serious. Is your opponent spamming the same projectile option over and over again? Are they camping you out the entire match? Picking cheesy options because they think they can take an easy stock? Teabagging? Just straight-up playing like a little bitch? Dish it back out to them if you can and/or want to. I've found that many of the players who like to be toxic or are ultra-sweaty can't handle dealing with the same things they use to torment their opponents, and tend to crumble when they face unexpected adversity. Granted, this definitely won't work every time, but if it does, you'll feel good, and you'll probably have a lot of fun doing it. Ignore The Smash Community (Sometimes): Some parts of the Smash community are, for lack of a more elegant way to describe it, really fucking annoying. People will endlessly argue about tier list placements, top players, and other stupid shit just so they can die on the weirdest hills when in reality, their opinions only pertain to the top 1% of Smash players anyway. People will publicly hate on, bully, harass, etc. players and community figures they don't like (this wasn't uncommon within my local scene, too). I've been told I'm trash at the game in another comments section just because I said both of the players in a match played really well. The Smash Community can be a great source of information on how to get better and and perhaps provide camraderie, but in my experience it's important to apply critical thinking to what it has to offer, and sometimes just to ignore it altogether. Have Fun: Just have fun! Play however you want, whenever you want, with the rules you want. Don't worry about what other people say or think. If anyone tells you that you need to play a certain character or that you should only play on certain stages, they're wrong. It's up to YOU to define YOUR experience while playing this game, and nobody else can take that from you. Hope this helps!

Awesome video. I appreciate this one a ton. I've been trying to figure out how to improve at a faster rate, but this has the drawback at getting more frustrated with my gameplay. After watching this video, I thought about my recent losses in tournament. I didn't actually play like trash. I just lost close games because of lack of MU knowledge, mainly. I noticed as soon as I picked up on some of my opponents habits and/or learned how to counter them, I'd start stomping them until they adapted and stomped me. I have so much more to work on, but I can confirm that my mindset is holding me back. It has held me back for 2 years.

The biggest frustration I feel in this game is when I’m missing my inputs. Everything else comes second (in terms of frustration) But I really like making sure everyone’s having a good time. That’s the most important part to me. I select my mains based on who people like playing against too, not just who I like playing as. With maybe a few exceptions

You wanna know what game I have never had a rage fit at? Dark Souls. Why? It’s a challenging game where you will fail more often than you will triumph. That’s the key, when you go into something knowing it’s extremely difficult and has a reputation for being so, failure just becomes a part of the process, not something to be ashamed of With smash, you have all of these people saying that characters are “easy” or “cheesy” instead of the huge challenge it is to outplay your opponent and achieve victory. If you go into each game thinking that it’s an extreme challenge and failure is inevitable but also something you can learn from, losing will never feel as bad again.

well yes, i put it like this: the tryhards are just an challenge and an item to gain experience, the teabaggers are people who you can just ignore because you’re playing online and there’s no way they’ll know who you are or where you live in this universe, and the spammers are people who are obviously worse than you so when you lose to them don’t feel bad about yourself because you’ll know in this world there are people who need such strategy to win against someone like you. also, thank you redgerran for this advice, definitely will recommend this video to my friends. You’ve earned my sub :)))))))))

I remember a couple years ago, there was one day when I was having a really tough time with Byleth online, and then I just kinda stopped caring subconsciously. At that point, I started tearing through the GSP heavens - pun intended - and went on a 4 million GSP win streak, and I didn’t even realize until I decided that I had played for long enough, after having a really good time and not consciously thinking about losing (like the tryhard that I usually am). I’ve tried to get back into that mindset dozens if not hundreds of times since, but I’ve never been able to just put my frustrations aside for long enough. Nonetheless, this video was really helpful, so thanks for helping me feel at least a little better about my losses in retrospect.

I gotta say, I didn't think there would be any advice on this topic that wasn't easier said than done, i.e., "yeah, sure, don't get mad. got it". But this actually seems like some legitimate advice. I, too, have been playing Smash since the N64 days (yeah, I'm that old). I've always approached Ultimate like a try hard with a sense of entitlement, like I should win because of how long I've been playing, and I get angry when I get bodied constantly. It's time to just start having fun with one of my favorite franchises of all time. It's not like my old ass is ever going to be a pro gamer anyway.

@sword_pro_8

I feel like this video personally called me out cause I got super tilted yesterday playing quickplay. I have spent over 1500 hours in the game playing locally, and I always incinerated my oponents. So when I played quickplay it was a way to test myself and try something new, but then I started losing... over and over... and it stopped being fun. I was like "How am I losing against this bad player" if I had spent more time in the game. That coupled with lag was enfuriating to the point where Smash litterally stopped being fun. One of the reasons I play so much is because for me smash is a way to escape reality and have fun. But this fixed mindset and the toxicity was keeping me from that. The point of playing a video game is to have fun and I didn't realize that smash turned from hobby to chill to a stress maker. I thought I had a growth mindset because I even told people that the point was too have fun and I never realized that I wasn't having fun. This seems like something really obvious, but its a real issue. I really liked your video more than other growth vs fixed mindset video and I felt like I connected personally more to that.
@sword_pro_8
@sword_pro_8 Год назад
Additionally I get mad not because I loose, but because of the lag, the cheese, the unfairness. Because I do have fun if we both put up a good fight even if I lose. But to just get cheesed or too loose by lag and to get the GSP taken away from me just felt so bad in general.

I can say with 10000% certainty, my single biggest drawback in this game is getting mad/tilted, and like no other game. No other Smash game has annoyed this much, and it has a lot to do with how permissive it is towards new players. Players can get away with so damn much, and this is very evident on wifi. I wasn't mature enough to handle that, and at this point, it's unlikely I will. That never allowed me to grow as a player and just adapt, because I'm too caught up in my head and emotions.

I can't help but feel like I'm the cause of so many rage moments for others online. Not because I'm toxic or do anything in particular to upset anybody, but because I'm so proficient at the game now that it must make people feel like they're just starting out. I usually only find myself losing to those that eat, sleep and breathe Smash, or who typically only use a single character for thousands of hours.

I went into this video when I tried to practice the growth mindset with like, Fox on Quickplay. Couldn't land bairs, couldn't juggle, and relied too much on jab and utilt to rack up damage. I have the learner's mindset with my current career (associate clinical social worker), utilizing evidence based practices, learning about some of the ethical and organization based limitations (like if a client wants to kill his/her/themself), and how to write proper clinical documentation. I found it a lot easier to practice the learner's mindset with a supportive cohort, supervisor and spouse. I do NOT have this with Smash or other fighting games, because every Leffen, Alpharad, Little Z, Low Tier God and Filipino Champ tell us we are shit at the game and we don't have fun playing. But I think what'll help me develop the mindset for Smash is my clinical career alone. Good money, high demand career at least where I'm at (we don't have a lot of male clinical social workers), and I can utilize what I teach to clients as a clinician in my Smash journey. I am not giving up my clinical career for Smash. I didn't go to school for 7 years after high school just for Smash. Besides, after a month or so of grinding, tears and anger, I got my main in Elite (Jigglypuff), and that's all I wanted.

I will say, and this wasn’t really mentioned in the video, something I find myself getting angry at most often is how I feel like I’m fighting the games unpolished mechanics at times more than my opponent, and it’s not exactly something you can “just practice” things like sticky platforms and bouncing off the side of stage even though you air dodged directly to ledge are all inconsistencies that will make even the most calm player a little tilted. I do think the growth mindset is a good thing to have regardless of inconsistency in the game, because it will probably lead you to be less angry when those kinds of thing do happen

I just got back into the game after buying the dlc. I’m loving smash online but I think the most common problem people have is just how much the game punishes you for losing not only do you lose more gsp for losing than gained gsp for winning but if you lose twice in a row you lose even more gsp. This encourages people to just never rematch when they lose and hope that they can beat the next person. It also propagates cheesy strategies like choosing ness on the character select screen. This is because a cheese strat will probably get players on the first or even second stock, but most players will be able to adapt by third stock. Basically they rely on catching you by suprise rather than just outplaying you. What’s even worse is that if a player realizes that you figured them out they will usually leave with their win before you can take a win in return. So yeah if you get cheesed a few times in row you feel like your wins have been stolen AND your in gsp hell. My advise if your on a losing streak take a break. Trying to end on a win usually just results in more anger and more losses. Also about “tryharding” try as hard as you need to just take a break when you use 100% of your brainpower. I’m a joker main and the most fun match I’ve ever had was against another joker player. on some level he knew me and I knew him we both had to constantly adapt and anticipate each others moves. The best part about any kind of ditto is that you can’t blame anything for the result except for the skill of the players. Rant over bye

Red Gerran I hope you read this comment and give me some feedback I like the points you bring out. I myself am not an angry person when I lose in smash but I will say that as a person who plays smash I loki play smash online and that experience sucks so much especially when you have people that bully you. Now a lot of people would tell me why do you choose to play smash online and overcome your bullies? Why? because honestly I can't stop thinking about the situation and sometimes it demotivates me to play smash and i feel like I get worse and worse the mre I play. But there is one thing that I recognize and that is even though I lose a lot online I actually realize that I am indeed the best player when It comes to smash and the people I play with online on a day to day basis. Why do I say this? because even though I lose a lot my playstyle improves and what matters is that I'm able to put on a good fight. Yes there will be times where I actually get bodied and yes there will be times where I bodie people. My aim is to be acceptable of what the game is. before I was the top tier online players amongst my friends. suddenly the tables turned and they have gotten better than me some how. but in the end progession is key and in this scenario I'm trying to train myself and being better mentally I kid you not when I play 4 player smash amongst my friends and always get 4th or 3rd Inside me I would start crying but honestly that's just how it is there is no changing it but it means is it makes me stronger and stronger I may not win but I'm able to keep a fight going this also goes the same with 1v1's I never win or barely 1v1's when I'm playing with the people in smash but that doesn't make me a bad player. infact the people that win only shows me they are more vulnerable and gives me the ability to push myself to where I have no limits meanwhile they brag about how many times they win. another thing to mention at the end of the day it is an online match and online doesn't matter as much as people make it matter. One thing that I'm trying myself is not allowing myself to get bullied and if I do get bullied I take the punch but never give up. and continue to be strong because that's what smash is all about especially when it comes to having fun. having fun matters more than trying to prove something. I hope that we can play some matches together or something like that. Now I want to be honest with you my current state when it comes to smash and how much I lose and how much i get bullied online it makes me want to cry and have a mental breakdown but in the end there is always going to be a twist.

This game knows how to bring out the rage in me. My anger grows every time I lose a match, especially in a row. Byleth, Samus/Dark Samus, Pyra/Mythra, Peach/Daisy, Palutena, Robin, Wii Fit Trainer, Corrin, Mr. Game & Watch, Bayonetta, Sephiroth, Pac-man, King Dedede, Zelda, Sheik, Marth, Jigglypuff, Ike, Snake, Joker, and Diddy Kong are the characters who I lose to so many times and I hate fighting against them. Out of all those characters, Byleth is the one who I really hate the most. That one is so stupid and bullshit how he/she is so slow, but so powerful that it’s super annoying and not funny. That’s when my anger rises to the max. No matter how many characters I choose like my mains Terry Bogard, Sonic the Hedgehog, King K. Rool, Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter, and Mii Gunner, how many matches I played, I still can’t counter Byleth with anything. Nothing works and I couldn’t do anything about it. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a very fun game, but man being frustrated with tons of crying because I couldn’t improve my skills and myself sucks. 😔😡🤬😭

When I get mad at this game,‘it’s usually me getting mad at myself for doing something over and over and getting punished every time for it. It’s a me thing not them The other 5% of the time it’s stupid rules. 1stock matches, lag switches, teabagging etc.

I would love just consistent connection. Some matchs my movement is fine but others especially matchs against projectile based characters. I go into the training area for 5 minutes and as soon as I play quick play the lag is so bad my shield input comes out so late they can do their most end laggy move and still grab me or continue to combo me. So some matchs they can get free combos or reads because however i adjust my timing its almost never the same from match to match. So i have to train myself to get as much information on first stock. I can adjust but when its so bad they can forward air me from the height between the 3rd and 2nd platform by fast falling and greb me before it can come outni just wsnna die. It hurts my ptide and only makes it worse in the next maych because it could be better or heck way worse.

Let's just say sometimes heavies aka king k rool, or bowser, are the only real gripes I have about this game besides the two yellow rats. If the heavies were more like DK, I would have enjoyed fighting against them

its almost getting impossible to enjoy this game anymore even when i hear 100 times to just think positively. even when i take week long brakes and month long brakes it does not help the situation even when i win i dont feel happy because the next game is just as aggravating. and the worst part about it is when i play with my friends they arent good enough at the game to give me any challenge but im not good enough to play in elite smash. and i can never approach right because every time i attack im just a little bit to far and the shielding in this game is something i cant get around its just impossible to approach online and i just feel like i can play without getting angry anymore and no about of "think positively" changes what happens in game. i just dont know what to do anymore

The most frustrating part is not winning and not knowing particularly what you did wrong. At that point, it's just about gaining experience. That's literally what it comes down to. You just need to gain more fluency with how your opponent's character can move and what options they have (plus knowing your own character with a similar fluency). If I run into a Yoshi or Metaknight, I'm probably gonna lose just because I'm not as familiar with their movement patterns. If I lose against Joker, it's just because Joker is free. But because I know these things, I can be a little more patient with myself. Tl;dr: it's not about just being positive. It's about how you frame it in a way where you can see it as a learning opportunity which gradually builds up over time.

@@redgerran thanks for this, yesterday I was beyond tilted and I know that getting better is not easy so ill try to focus on learning what other characters can do rather then just the ones I play.

It's so weird for me😅 i do not really care about going to tournaments or anything. But i still have this strong will to get better for some reason. I did get angry last time when i was playing against a Ivysaur who was camping with Razor Leaf for the entire match. I play Cloud and Sephiroth, and Sephiroth is a character that i adore. But i can't seem to have fun with the character no matter how much i play him. My combo's don't get better and consistent, my Neutral is ass, i do not even know what my optimal gameplan should be. And i have a really hard time adapting to good players. Especially against players who are good at mixups. I mostly lose against my Discord buds, and i can't seem to understand why i keep losing so much😢. I have way more hours then them and i still lose a lot more than them. I know for a fact that i have a fixed mindset. But i do not completely know how to change that. I wanna have fun, but i also wanna get really good to clap my friends asses😅 just for fun aswell😊 can anyone give me advice for my issue atm? Thank you in advance

I just did an experiment where I dropped my GSP as far as it could go. Between 2 and 12 million, there is essentially no difference between the talent level of players. (At 12 million they're a lot more competitive since they're trying to get into Elite Smash)
