I don't think most people realize how much your home affects your mental health. It's also important to mention that if you live in a shared home where you can't make big changes, just focus on changing the space(s) you do have control over no matter how small. Great video, Paige!

One time I helped a friend move out of her apartment in Minneapolis back in the 90s. She had a small but cute place. Once it was empty, it was a total shithole. I told her WOW, you are an amazing decorator. God, we were both single Moms back then and did a ton of DIY and curb finds, thrifting, all that. It's amazing what you can do when forced to be creative.

My grandmother passed away in 2020, and I inherited her home. I've been slooooowly decorating. I believe in not rushing decisions because you can waste a lot of money making bad decisions.

Back in the 90s HGTV used to have a few shows that were all about revamping a person's space with their already owned furniture and possessions. I was a teen and I loved those shows. I was always rearranging my room because of those shows. So much more attainable than the shows that came later. Aggravating that tmeveryone now thinks you have to spend tons of money to refresh their room. Or a target shopping spree.

"RIP Grandma" LOL.

We were a military family when I was growing up so we moved constantly. If we were in one place for more than a year, we got antsy. And because we moved so often, my parents kinda had to take what was available re housing. My mother was a literal magician with decorating. And for the first month or so, the house was constantly changing as she figured out what was going to work in that particular house. And ya, sometimes you’d come home and entire rooms had been swapped. My father used to say as long he knew where his chair and his bed were, he was happy 😂 All to say, I am an old hand at moving things around the minute I start to feel bored or unhappy with my home. Even if it’s a room I don’t spend much time in, just mixing things up somewhere in the house seems to unlodge stuck energy and there’s usually a cascading effect where the whole house gets tweaked even slightly (or sometimes massively). Sometimes I even go ahead and yank out things that are really depressing me even if I can’t afford to replace them yet. I yanked off the carpet on my stairs and yanked out cabinets in my kitchen a couple of years ago. The kitchen still isn’t “done” and one wall is still pretty rough and the stairs haven’t been finished totally, but I don’t care. I’d rather have something unfinished then stare at something I hate every day. Also, sometimes it gives me more time to come up with even better ideas than my initial ones or sometimes a new product comes out in the meantime that solves a problem for me. And no, I don’t think it’s a negative thing that your space is that important to you. Some of us are very sensitive to our surroundings and if they’re displeasing it nags at our brains all the time. Now, if you were going into massive debt to buy extremely expensive decor, that would be a whole other issue. But you’re not, so it’s not. ❤

Wise words! I recently bought a giant piece of art that took over a whole wall and it changed my space completely. It made it feel more finished, more mine. That renewed sense of love for my space gave me the willpower to tackle some other jobs. Like painting some trim and doors I left with just primer on all through Covid. Also decluttering. All the little steps matter. ❤

I love your suggestion to paint the smallest room because it’s lower risk. It reminds me of when I decided to put encaustic tile on the bathroom floor. It was the perfect place for me to try a pattern somewhere. I’m so happy how it turned out! Thanks for all your tips, Paige!

one small thing a week helps you create a home. Just pick one thing and change it. Just like you said. Before you know it, you will have a put together home. It's just setting goals and sticking with it.

Just keep meaning to mention that to you. About Grandma's coffee table. Everyone please remember this: Grandma loved her coffee table, which is why she kept it so long. But she loved you more than she loved her coffee table. And because of that, she wanted you to be as happy with what you have, as she was with what she had. I'm sure she would want you to sell it and get something you love. And you know what? Every time you look at that new coffee table, the one you love, you will STILL think of Grandma, because she made that possible, as a last gift to you. 🧡

Growing up my mum would sometimes completely move the furniture around in the rooms, to breathe new life into the space. She'd do this with my bedroom too, and as a kid I always found it so exciting to fall asleep and then wake-up in my 'new' room because the whole energy was totally changed. Your videos have helped me remember the extremely satisfying power in that. I would absolutely love to see more videos of you reviewing/suggesting changes for your subscribers homes, especially with things they already own - I've binged through the others you did and so keen for more 🙏

Oh my goodness, today I redecorated my shelving unit completely for the first time since I initially put it up, that is for the first time in almost 20 years! It took me almost three hours to complete the job, I inhaled a crapload of dust, but my, was it worth it! And then I sat down to watch your new video and hear this piece of advice , lol! Ah, the ol interior design high. I redid a little corner in my eat in kitchen to add a lamp that I love and some art. Its the little moments that really change yhe feeling of a space.

Love your family home. It’s very classic. Love that striped wallpaper in the hallway. It’s really great. To me, just focusing on one project at a time, and focusing on the areas you hang out in the most really helps you to not be overwhelmed. Also, get creative with what you have, like you said. Keep what’s good. And yes, be realistic. You are so right.

Learning to accept what you can’t change is so true. I am actually a little tired of a lot of interior design RU-vid bc they all assume you own the place, can afford to change/renovate, that it is even possible to change. And here are 10 things from CB2 and Article you can buy except I can’t because I live abroad and won’t because I won’t spend $1000 on a chair. And get real wood floors except I can’t because I rent. All peppered with the same advice about art height, rug size, no accent walls or furniture sets that I’ve heard a million times. (Mostly not wrong except for accent walls, some of us renters don’t have a lot of choice and I actually like them). This is more realistic: I can’t renovate my small bathroom with the orange and green accent tile so ok, we’re going retro 70s with it. I want a bigger kitchen but I can’t have one so ok, we’re accepting that it will be a little cluttered. I can’t have real wood floors so ok, we’re getting an amazing rug to distract from the vinyl plank. I can’t have stone counters so ok, we’re calling stainless steel trendy.

I think its something to how you feel on the inside is represented on how you show up on the outside. So your surroundings can be a game changer. I love some of the tips about thinking of small spaces first. My realtor told me you are never finished decorating a home so don't rush to an imaginary finish line. No truer words. I do think switching room around and decor feels fresh, also doing small projects or even geting a plant can help a lot. And don't underestimate the effect of color on your mood....

Lol…loved the philosophical struggle at end. My friend has a good take on the matter of self-love/acceptance & how it relates to our personal spaces. The thinking is sometimes we do things to pamper our ego (ie, gut reno) vs doing the self-loving things that honor who we are in that moment. I like looking at it that way because it helps with accepting reality (and being happy with it). I haven’t had the funds to focus on the aesthetic stuff coz I had to do some major repairs, but I try to look at is as new foam insulation, water system repairs & new fence are self-loving gestures for safety/health. Once that foundation is there, I can pivot to the beauty stuff. It’s worked out better that way…I’ve found lots of items in my cart that I’m glad I didn’t purchase! Patience is virtue in a new home, for sure.

It is totally normal to not feel fully comfortable with your space at all times. And money and work needed is always a factor. Most people don’t hire decorators. Sometimes, you have to live in a space to let it inspire you. I think the dramatic makeovers we see on tv & RU-vid have warped our thinking on decor and how it should be: instant wow factor. It should not be static. I feel the need to change things every 8-10 years. Around year 8, I start thinking I need a change. Then I look at other things, see what gives me inspiration, let my mind brew and create a new vision.

I love your channel but this might be my favorite video of yours. Love the accessible tips AND how it all came back to self acceptance (and dead grandmas 😂).

We rearrange constantly. Also, partners parents are carpenters and help us with quick upgrades like putting fresh carpet in nursery (only cost us $100 at a bargain store) and tbh these are skills most people could quickly learn. But tbh my biggest “upgrade” is just getting rid of stuff. Cleaning out your space makes it feel fresh and new instantly.

Excellent advice. Thank god for dead grandmas or I’d have very little furniture. I’ve known those periods of discontent, a lot due to finances, but realistically, when I look at new things I don’t find them very appealing. Can’t wait to see you redo someone’s space with what they have!

You say you talk about lighting too much but like, it's the biggest game changer. A space could seem so awkward or even oppressive.... warm lighting it's transformed to a livable, cozy, enjoyable space. Love this. Needed this. Moving soon to a live-work space with a lot of open area... won't know until I'm in how to approach that. But this video is a great reminder that it doesn't have to be this huge production all at once. One step at a time til there's absolute love for the space.

Yes. I live in a studio that is a tiny square with the kitchen island as my headboard. I’ve wrapped that in bamboo, I’ve thrown a borrowed white restaurant tablecloth over it, currently have an Ace Hotel sheet as a side curtain, filters light nicely,. I collect and sell mid century and have gotten up in the middle of the night to switch out an artwork. I’ve been told get rid of my records and books for more space but No! I need to have physical tactile things. Thank you for this video, very relatable m, and good to know I’m not the only one this gets bummed/ obsessed over placement of things and bad layouts etc

I've been doing this non-stop for the past month or so!! A neighbor in my apartment building joined the navy and didn't need his furniture anymore or want to haul it all down 2 flights of stairs, so I suddenly inherited 8 bookcases!! I've found other homes for a couple, but all these extra shelves really started a domino effect in my home of moving around ALLL my art and trinkets. I'm also a BIG fan of long wall shelves with layered frames and decor, so they've all been getting a refresh! I find myself going into each room just to look at my stuff haha.

I'm in the middle of the first "wave" of renovations to my little old craftsman. I painted the living room and dining room before I moved in so it feels good even though it's still unfinished. I love color but the previous owner didn't paint any two adjoining walls the same color. So far I'm finished with my hallway, my bathroom, now I'm working on making my son's room magical, and stewing my ideas for my bedroom next. We're starting small and gaining momentum!

How not to hate your home: 1) Don’t follow trends. 2) Figure out what YOU like. Purchase what resonates with your spirit. Does it make you *feel* something? 3) Be practical. Does the item go with the architecture of your home and your existing decor? Will it fit? Is it too big or too small? 3) Look around. A lot. Browse stores, magazines, and the internet. 4) Once you find your personal style. You’ll be happy with your items no matter how old they get and whether or not they’re still “in style”.

I love this! You've always got such realistic fun tips to make a space YOURS but also sometimes kill your darlings (while still making it gorgeous). Lately I've stopped completely to make my flat to please others high expectations. I have 34 sqm. My latest purchase was a tall trash can. Actually kind of pricey. The old one was hidden but tiny, flimsy and no pedal. This one is white , sturdy and so well designed. To me it blends in. I also know people will criticize it since it's an open floorplan and it's visible almost everywhere. But I don't care I love my trashcan! It makes me happy. I live here. They just visit.

I had an idea a couple weeks ago to move my dining table into my living room and a side table & comfy chair from my living to my dining space. Made a huge difference!! Love it so much more and it feels like it was always supposed to be that way.

I agree people want a total renovation all the time when one or two changes will make a huge difference. I would bloody love you to revamp my place using my stuff so if you ever do a London one let us all know because I'm somewhat a hoarder of art and decorative objects and have trouble editing them down. You could work wonders.

Hi, I enjoy watching your videos each week. To be brutally honest, we don't always have the same style of decorating. But, I truly appreciate yours. I especially enjoyed this video because I feel that many people feel less than because they can't do a big renovation (or a small one). Daily, we're bombarded with unrealistic images and homes of "others."It's not doable for 90% of people. Making small, systematic changes over time make a huge difference. I think most of us should give ourselves a break. Makes life better. This video was a perfect reminder of that.

You can change the color of tile grout by painting on and wiping off a 'glaze' of watery paint, it works realy well
