HOW TO NOT LOSE MONEY ON CARS- FINANCIAL RISKS OF OWNING YOUR DREAM CAR

A slightly different format for today’s video, let me know if you like it!
Investing in cars is dumb. But owning something you have always wanted and protecting its value is always a good decision in my book. Last year I managed to trade my way into my unobtainable dream car, this 2010 Porsche 997.2 GT3RS, and since then their values have absolutely skyrocketed. On paper that seems great but there are actually a bunch of downsides for people who like using their cars as they are intended.
Here are my top 3 things that depreciate a collector car/ super car and my feelings on each. In between each is a mini-vlog to break up me yapping forever. Enjoy!
Follow me on the other things, I promise its not just cut downs from this episode:

No offense Vin, but this video is better than anything Hoonigan has put out in a long time. As far as the vlog style is concerned, it's interesting to know your take on the enthusiast market imo and I know you're passionate about it too so it's not forced. It could be cool to see you discussing it with other industry people. Cool to see the local scene as well. Whatever happens on the channel, thanks for sharing!

I hope so too. Hoonigan was special because they had corporation-sized budget but made content like a bunch of knuckleheads who love cars. We probably won’t see that happen ever again, but if the former Hoonigan and adjacent RU-vidr hosts could all build a new culture of content in the same vein (but on a smaller scale) then the value given to the global car enthusiast culture will be immeasurable. I think if anyone can pull it off, it’s Vin.

As one of the older guys here (probably), giving advice to help get people in cars so they can get out driving I feel would be a good thing. There are a lot of people that look to people like you, Hert, Zach, and even Scotto for what to do on their cars. Not a lot of info out there on how to get a car, how to make the most of your money to get on track. All the hidden cost to get on a track event is a surprise to most, they think they can just show up, pay an entry fee, and let it roll... Help keep car culture alive!

Thank you for covering several of the things I mentioned in my comment from your prior vid, especially the C&C. 4. It’s always great seeing the OG Hoonigan dudes. 5. This vlog style is what is needed in the automotive community, as you said there are so many amazing RU-vid channels that cover great builds but the average person can’t afford to build those cars without sponsors etc etc. you idea of talking about what it would take to buy/afford cars from a low to high scale would hit the nail on the head IMO
@AbominableJoshie
@AbominableJoshie 3 месяца назад
You are doing the thing already. You are a part of the automotive cultural phenomenon that was Hoonigan. You stay connected with your friends from there, you buy cars because of your passion, you have your own unique perspective, and you're used to talking to camera. My deepest hope is that the lot of you guys all figure out that your contributions to that entity are valuable on their own as well and deserve their own deep dives. The "Oh, that's just Vin being Vin" or "Scotto being Scotto" brush offs to keep to the Hoonigan format doesn't apply anymore. You've got the content built in, and people will either stay because they enjoy it or not. Stop caring about what you think people want and just do you. And bring a camera. The rest will sort itself out. The happiest content creators are the most genuine ones. Hell, we saw Suppy smile today.

Personally I find that following someone on the inside of the car scene, watching them meet people, see their cars and share their opinions makes for the best content. I really loved Hoonigan's Carcain Abroad series and Scotto's Van series, and this video reminds me of those. Something about simplicity and honesty and real life setting makes it enjoyable. I would gladly watch more vids in the similar format, and if you go on a road trip, make sure to film it aswell.

Does anyone have some insights on why hoonigan has gone to shit? Everybody is talking about that it's since they belong to wheelpros but I had the feeling it was already going down beforehand. Also why wheelpros has allegedly such a bad influence on their content? Why specifically? And why did they sell the shop? So many questions and sadly they don't seem to care enough about their original fanbase to explain it themselves..
@ADSImagens
@ADSImagens 3 месяца назад
Basically you're right. They were sold to Wheel Pros and after that things've changed. You have to understand that before that it was Ken and Brian that defined the kind of crazy content that we know for years. So now that they sold the company they have to follow rules put by the buyers that don't want the "Hoonigan" kind of content. Is more "arbitruary" and "responsable". And for the worst they started to doing the worst brand deals with huge car companies in the "This vs. That" like that Kia EV vs. Ferrari. We don't even have the crew working on cars anymore. So the guys that were part of the series basically quit and started their own things. What Wheel Pros didn't realized is that Hoonigan is not only a brand, is the people behind the scene and in front of the camera. @@Harry_Gersack
@Harry_Gersack
@Harry_Gersack 3 месяца назад
@@ADSImagens hmm responsible is not the first thing for me that comes to mind when thinking about how the content has changed. For me it feels like the videos are lower effort and more for the broad masses and not for the real car guys anymore. I know renting an airport or building a dirt track is not the least effort you can put in a video. But I see it like that: they rent the location and then they do the races and in one day they can get content for like 10 videos or so. I think compared to the hoonage and scumbaggery we know from years ago, that this is a easy way for them to make content. And from a technical perspective the videos have gotten really shallow. Not the true car guy content anymore. Probably helps to reach more viewers.. On the other hand I've recently rewatched a view daily transmissions from the donut garage and some of them had much more views than the videos from now

The point about mileage is so solid. Cars that have been driven have had some attention paid to them (especially older enthusiast cars). Plus, leaving a car sitting without taking care of it is potentially one of the worst things you can do to it aside from actually wrecking it.

Dropping in to see what others are up to, going to cars-n-coffee, driving, while your main story was talking about the financial risks of expensive cars. I guess that would be called the "B story". You are in a unique position compared to other RU-vidrs and that is, your viewers are invested in you as a person. Your time on Hoonigan gave us all a chance to get to know you and feel as if you're a "friend" so to be honest, most of us are just curious what you're doing on a day-to-day. RU-vid viewers are a voyeuristic bunch and we enjoy living vicariously thru the lives of people we relate to, & the same is especially true for car guys. We can't afford all the cars we really want so we enjoy watching others do it. Unfortunately for you that means you should just be a vlogger. Show us what you're doing. Even if it seems boring and mundane to you, it's a distraction from our own boring lives to watch how you live yours. I'm sure I speak for a lot of your fans when I say, we're just curious how you make a living playing with cars since that's all any of us really want to do ourselves. The other thing I'll say is, take advantage of your relationships with the OG Hoonigan crew and introduce us to your other car guy personalities. There are 2 keys to a successful RU-vid channel; being good at what you do (I think that counts you out as a car builder ;-) sorry) and being an entertaining personality (that's your bread and butter). Jimmy Oakes channel does well because he's pretty good at both but where he really shines is his crew of friends that all seem to be having a good time playing with cars. Show us you and your friends having a good time playing with cars. We'll watch that, promise.

I enjoyed driving the car, but only for joyrides and not on the track, because I didn't want to take the chance of getting it damaged. Knowing that the car would have been practically impossible to replace and a lot of its value was because of the mileage and condition took the fun out of owning it. I’ve never been afraid of high mileage, as long as there are good service records. One of my best used car purchases was maintained by a DIY mechanic that had clipboards with dates, mileage, what was done, etc, hanging in his garage for each of his 3 cars. I was very comfortable buying his C63s with 135k miles over 5 years. He did most of the maintenance himself, but every 6 months he brought it to MB to do an inspection - which was on the Carfax. I sold the car at 180k, and it was still running like a champ, and I adopted his record keeping and inspections for all my nicer cars.

This was such refresher for me. Thank you for sharing some knowledge, I can’t even begin to explain how well this video was able to grab my attention and keep it. Already these couple videos have been great to watch, I’ll definitely always be quick to watch any more to come when I see them.

Whatever you call this vlog/vibe works really well IMO. Your authenticity is what gets the views. It'd be dope to learn about the buying aspect, the driving, or even previous work you've done before, like you mentioned body/paint experience. Had no clue. Good luck and honestly at this point I'm supporting almost anything ya post.

Honestly Vin, as an older enthusiast in his 30s, I appreciate the more academic side of car culture and ownership, and it's interesting and thought provoking to hear other people's thoughts on it, yours in particular. I know you probably don't want to become the wise Yoda of the car world, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't pumped to see more content on purchasing, modifying, and driving sick builds of all types, but having a video every now and then where you/the channel explores the philosophical side of car stuff is actually pretty based. Also love the editing style, the jump cuts between car stuff, vlog stuff, and dogs is great lol edit: I am also an unapologetic E36 fanboi lol I'm pumped for *any* E36 content, I love your collection

I love this Vin, the transparency you give to explain why, or why not you do things is so important now, as so many people and channels only show the 'cool', 'interesting' or 'amazing' parts of owning or having incredible cars and lifestyle. It's nice to know just because you have all these things it does not make your decisions easier. Keep these videos coming through! Im enjoying them alot as well as others!! ❤

Love this type of video - might be my favourite automotive content I’ve seen in a long time. As someone who’s just entering the automotive market to buy like actual performance cars now (beyond my civic with an exhaust lol) these are the type of topics I wanna hear. Really refreshing and most of all helpful. For me at least these practical type of videos on being an enthusiast are important. Don’t really have anyone to talk to about it so videos like this (that are rare) are super informative hearing from an experienced enthusiast like yourself. Keep doing what your doing!

Happy to watch you drop any type of knowledge I think you've done things a lot of people aspire to do, whether that's flipping cars up to your dream car, your job at Hoonigan or simply just owning tastefully modded cars. I think casual / honest conversations about any of this is great content

100% in for financial car move knowledge. Not enough people talk about how they went from say a 2k$ mk1 Gti to a e63 wagon… my own moves. But I probably could have done it faster or smarter if someone with the knowledge shared it with me back in the day. Keep this rad line of videos going!

Your vlog style is grippy - it holds my attention. You’re adding a lot of value with your experience that people want to hear. You have a perspective a lot of people don’t. Love the videos! Keep it coming. Definitely want to see a finance video on how you think when buying / selling.

This is some good content man. Love how it's real ownership of cool cars and not just hypercars/supercars and what crazy trip/event/wrap we're doing next. Had a ND Miata and recently started working my way up to something with an OG M2. Subbed and keep it up!

Bro I just started watching your channel and been catching up on older videos. I see you ask the follower what we would like to see. But honestly just be you do you. That’s why I stayed. Everyone one RU-vid just recycles everyone’s material and it’s got boring. Just do you bro 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Longer format, no click bait, rad dudes and chicks, sweet cars, honest and open talk and most importantly…….dogs, these are the reasons I’m loving your channel already. I think being able to show the stuff that you find interesting that partners previously didn’t see value in is a great way to do something fresh, I see threads creep into each channel as they start to fallow the add/stat route which I completely get as it’s how you stay afloat, but I feel like there is defiantly some value in deviating from that and developing a fallowing around more wholesome content, not sure if that helps but just know we are here for you, not because of what car you have, or what you are getting next, we are here for you and enjoy seeing how you do. Much love from aus.

Love your honesty coming from the viewpoint of an enthusiast who's worked hard to get to their dream ride. I got mine last year (although not to the same scale - '19 rs3) and reality and stress of ownership has tainted the pleasure somewhat. The financial worry and having to think twice where it gets parked is tiresome.

Im enjoying these vlogs because they are real. Hope you continue, you totally should do the builds/repairs to your collection, more buying advice, track days are hard to capture, you should invite out others to do track days with you, if it drifting or racing its always more fun with friends! Cant wait to see the next one!

Video idea, talking about what ever you feel like talking about (when doing maintenance) on any of your cars, oil, coolant breaks. "info dump" while giving some value or more knowledge about cars. "work and talk" series.

Unpacking the finance of this life is super valuable. Culturally, people are far too scared to talk about their personal finance journey. Financial education is sorely lacking. Please keep sharing this. The best information on finance could help people manage their way into the hobby.

Coming from someone as influential as you, this was perfect and willing to bet a lot of people wanted to hear it too! It's true, it's not spoken about much and cars appear out of thin air on RU-vid without context of the work and dedication getting to that point. Realistically putting the numbers out there is nice! At least you're human and know when it can be "too much" and everything you can do to maximize your enjoyment out of the investment!

You hit it right on the nail. I just landed on your channel today and I went through all FIVE of your new vlogs in one setting. Never heard about you before but I do know about Hoonigan because of Ken Block so I watched. And to be honest, your vids are really great. Your mix of content between car projects and sharing personal knowledge of car related info really drew me into this channel. Keep it going. I think you have something great brewing. I’ll keep watching and following, which is something I hardly consistently do with other channels.

Vin you're making all the right decisions by being prudent about what you do with your RS3. Its my bucket list car, but who knows. Great video because you're just being honest and you're being really focused on your audience. As a "new" content creator, I think you're killing it! I feel the same way as you about creating valuable content. Keep up the great work. I am following you and appreciate the inspiration on just making videos on what you love.
