Amazon affiliated links below for products used to create this video. In this video, I discuss practical methods for achieving good recording audio that can be used for producing videos or a podcast episode. The main equipment I will be using are the Zoom PodTrak P4 and the Shure SM58 dynamic cardioid microphone. For filming, I'm using the Rode Wireless Go lavalier system and the Canon Vixia G60 camcorder at its highest 4K 150 mbps setting. If your current recording audio quality sucks, well let's try to fix it!

Hi Mark. Thanks for your super nice compliment! Experienced RU-vidr types will say my videos are too long. But real-world viewers and users like yourself appreciate the extra details, I have noticed. Since my videos on this topic are usually tutorials, that means my videos will go over the average 10 to 15 minute video length of a typical video. It's sort of like sitting in a class in school that lasts for an hour, haha!

Once again, Casey, BRAVO. I have often described myself as a technological idiot. I do it mainly so others don't get to call me an idiot themselves! What I like most about your videos is that you explain this stuff the way people like me need to hear it. You call the "gain," "volume," which is what it is to people like me. I'll learn the other words too, but let's start with calling it volume like you do. I'm able to understand. I also appreciate the time you take to talk about how different mics work. I recorded my first podcast with the PodTrak P4 the other day using one condenser mic and one dynamic. The condenser was MUCH louder and reacted completely differently than the dynamic. Now I know why. I also now know why I could hear so much background noise on the condenser mic track. One comment/question regarding the volume...I mean gain ;-) level. When I began post-production I found the condenser mic my guest used was MUCH louder than the dynamic mic I used. There was even some clipping. But I found that I was able to reduce the level of the condenser mic in post-production with one quick move using Audacity (again, thanks to the links you provided). I was not able to increase the level of the dynamic mic. Perhaps I just didn't know how. So my question is, is it better to err on the side of too much volume rather than not enough? I hope you provide links to the products you used. I might want to purchase them and I'd like to use your links to do so. Lastly, did you do a video strictly about the rode lav mic? I'm interested in learning more about it. My lav mics SUCK. If so, can you share the link in a comment here?

@caseyonlocation8257 3 года назад
Hi Jeff, thank you much!! Pretty much everyone who does recording will tell you not to use a condenser mic, unless you are able to record in a very well treated sound room. If you don't have one, then use a dynamic cardioid microphone...it's that simple! If you are going to err, you should err on the lower side of volume/gain. Once an audio clip goes to zero decibel, otherwise known as clipping or peaking, it's pretty much screwed and hard to impossible to fix. It's easier to raise up the volume in post if the original recording was a bit on the lower side. I haven't done a video specifically dedicated to the Rode Wireless Go mic yet. But if you do a search on the microphone, there is a metric ton of glowing reviews about that product because it's been out for a couple years so it's nothing new. It's definitely worth the $200 price tag. I simply record with the built-in mic in the transmitter. Some other users prefer to plug in a wired lav mic into the wireless Rode transmitter, which is another good method especially if one is fond of the sound coming from a particular wired lav mic. Rode sells their own version of the Rode wired lav mic for an extra $75 which can be plugged into the Rode wireless transmitter. I'm lazy, or maybe I just don't feel like spending an extra $75 for that extra wired lav mic, so I simply use the built-in mic in the transmitter which I find convenient and the audio results to be more than sufficient for my needs. I have links to all these items in my pinned comment that I created. The pinned comment is located at the very top of all the other comments, and is right below the video. You will need to press the button that says "show more" or something like that to expand the entire comment. There is a whole slew of products you can check out with links for purchase if you're interested. Thanks for watching and your kind words! EDIT: Or you may have to click on the "Read more" where it says "Pinned by Casey Cheung" comment.

Hey, Casey. Love the video. Can you tell me if it's possible to use two wireless lav mics to record at the same time with the P4? i have a P4 but can't find anything that tells you how it would work. Let's say you wanna do a walk-and-talk interview, can it be doe with the blue tooth port on the right side? Thanks

Thank you for your useful lesson..may i have a question? I recently bought shure mv7 and mv7x mics for podcasting. And zoom p4 and zoom h8 is in my shopping list. Which one do you suggest for me? I m not a musician and if i buy h8 maybe i can record some field/nature record or may support my fuji x100f's videos with sound. Will zoom h8 a bit overkill for me? And my last question is ? Is zoom p4 appropriate choice for my mics (shure mv7 or mv7x) can zoom p4 feed my mics or can there be any harm to my mics from zoom p4? Sorry for my newbie questions because these topics are very difficult for me.

As far as I understand, you shoot with a Canon G60 camera? By the way, you know that a new firmware has been released for the Canon G60, Canon-LOG and other functions have been added there www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/camcorders/consumer/vixia/vixia-hf-g60?subtab=downloads-firmware
@caseyonlocation8257
@caseyonlocation8257 3 года назад
Wow, very nice, thank you much for letting me know! I don't check the Canon site too often, so I wasn't aware of that. I'm usually wary of doing firmware updates because sometimes it causes problems, so I will search around to make sure there are no known glitches before installing. I've been preferring to film with my Canon G60 camcorder over my other 2 Canon cameras which are the Canon 90D and Canon M50. The G60 camcorder has way better features for filming, including adjustable speed autofocusing and zooming, plus super sharp focusing and accurate exposure, not to mention its large 1 inch sensor. Now I see why others who shoot high def videos prefer a camcorder versus a DSLR or mirror-less body. The lack of interchangeable lenses on a camcorder isn't a big deal for me, cuz the built-in lens on the G60 camcorder is crazy sharp and accurate. If I really want interchangeable lenses, I simply switch to my other Canon cameras for that ability. Anyway, I hope you find my videos helpful, thanks for watching. Thanks for subscribing too if you did so. -Casey

@@caseyonlocation8257 Yes, I also like camcorders much more, and a non-removable universal lens, on the contrary, is a great advantage in most cases, and this fact will not be understood by those who shoot cameras, whether they are DSLRs or mirrorless cameras, until they try camcorders themselves
@caseyonlocation8257
@caseyonlocation8257 3 года назад
@@csamd9049 Yes, I agree. If I had to do it over again, I would have maybe gotten the Canon XF400 camcorder model for its top handle and XLR inputs. Maybe. At the time I didn't feel like spending an extra $1,000 more for that top handle feature. But the larger 3.5" LCD screen would have been a nice welcome upgrade. But now that I'm using my FeelWorld 5.5" external monitor on top of the camera, that's more than sufficient for my needs. Plus the FeelWorld monitor is more "accurate" than the built-in swivel screen from my G60 camcorder. Accurate meaning colors and vibrancy is better on the external monitor so I'm able to better judge what's going on when I'm in front of the lens.
