How to obtain CATpart files starting from stl file formats in CATIA V5

Within this video I present 2 workflows that allow the insertion of editable stl file formats in CATIA V5.
The first workflow makes use of the convert tool within DMU Optimizer Workbench that can transform the stl file format to a *.model file format.
The main drawback is that the model will be divided in multiple surface and it requires extra work in GSD module to join the surface before you can start to work with it.
The second workflow makes use of the Digitized Shape Editor workbench and this allows for a smoother insertion of stl files in Catia. Having the stl file inserted as a mesh, the model is then converted to a surface base model.

very very helpful thank's when trying to create an automatic surface it give this message: the mesh contain some area not connect

That means your mesh has some areas that are not connected. You need to use Mesh Cleaner and split the mesh in multiple sub elements, The Mesh Cleaner will help you in this process. You can check the following video for this problem. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JojwXq_akLg.html

Please help me..The stl to step file conversion proces is not proceeding at all. It always gets stuck at 0% for almost an hour. Would you please tell me what can be causing the problem ? Thanks.

Hello, usually the step file conversion can take a long time if the model is complex. If you want I can give it a try and have it converted.

Hello! To edit the surface you need to use generative shape design workbench for tge resulting surface, or shape sculptor initially on the stl file

I am using a model that has sharp edges and open geometry (it is like the hood of a car). When automatically generating the surface, the corners are becoming rounded instead of retaining the sharpness. Any idea why, and how to resolve this?

Try to increase the automatic surface details so that there will more surfaces that will define the corner.

4:14 When I do this step I have a problem. I copy the the master, then minimize the window and open a new part, go into part design. Then when I click "paste" as you do I get the error message "?? paste operation is impossible". Any idea on why ? Also I tried the second method, but when I open the import tab and choose select my file (06:20 in the video), it appears but the "ok" button is unclickable (grey, and nothing happens when i click). If I click on the "Apply" button I get the error Any idea ? Precision : it is a very big STL file. The part where it creates an offset on the surface took my computer about 10 min or more.

It is weird that you receive the message that the paste operation is impossible. I will try to replicate the workflow with a large STL file. I am curios, how big was the STL file? more then 2 mil vertices?

Hello my friend, i hope you can help me. At 1:40 I can only choose between DMU Space Analytics and DMU Kinematics. Can I somehow enable DMU Optimizer in the settings, or is it because I only got an educational version of Catia? Thank you and thumbs up for the video.

Hello, you need to install the complete version to have acces to all the workbenches. You cannot enable them otherwise.

Hi! That's an amazing tutorial. When I try to paste the .model into the new part file, Catia throws an error which says "?? paste not possible". Can you please help me with this? Thanks in advance.

Check if you have set the "define in work object" on the part that you are trying to copy. You can see this on the Catia tree by rightclicking on the part and then select the define in work object.
