This video shows the basic oil and lubrication procedures for a Penn conventional reel. This is something everyone can do without disassembling the reel.
I have been servicing reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please "like" it. If you want to see more, please subscribe.

Thanks Dennis for this well made video. With your guidance, I revived two fishing poles with Penn 209 reels that I hadn't touched in 16 years. Now I'm ready to honor my grandson's request to take him fishing and teach how to be a fisherman! I also like the more detailed maintenance videos you made, but started with this simpler one and it did the trick for my reels.

Glad it helped. Just be aware that your drag washers may have dried beyond repair after sitting for 16 years. You may need to replace them if you notice the drag doesn't work. It should hold clamped down, but you will probably lose the tension variability that fresh drags will provide - Best wishes for great fishing with your grandson - Dennis

Love those reels, back in the day I used to service those reels mainly the 106 and 206 as they were the most popular salmon trolling reels and the Navy Exchange had those reasonable. I still have six of those girls on display but still ready to catch. All made in the USA. Was a trip do memory lane.

Excellent video. Wish I knew that is all I had to do instead of taking reel apart and not being able to put back together a long time ago!

I almost expect to be branded a traitor of a sort because I buy old level line reels and put them on chopped rod butts and use them exclusively for flying kites. But I sometimes have to work hard to lubricate older reels to make them operate smoothly again, and this is a real help.

Thanks for the video is the Penn peerless no.9 smaller than the 109?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 лет назад
They are the same size. There is a different internal design. Thanks for asking - Dennis

I'll often take the clicker side off remove the spool and clean and lube drive side without disassembly. Hate when those clicker springs go flying!🤣

What about the grease zerk fitting near the bridge screws? Do you ever shoot a bit of grease in there?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 3 года назад
I don't, but you can. Most of the time those fitting are stuck or get stuck during the process. as a rule, I overhaul my reels at least once a year, so I do not need the quick fix shown in this video. Thanks for the additional tip - Dennis

Hi Dennis how are you how do you lube a conventional fishing reel thanks for your time and help
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 2 года назад
Oil in the main gear shaft and bearings. Lube on the main gear and pinion gear and if you have a level wind assembly, use oil on that too. Hope all is well Jeff - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle okay I appreciate the info.I was taking mine apart and something fell that I didn't see and I looked on the garage for the only thing I could find was a spring. I was just making sure that's all.

@@2ndChanceTackle some people were saying that it gums up .I don't know if it's the grease or the oil that they were talking about. Thanks again.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 3 года назад
It is not normal for the fishing reel greases or oils to gum things up. That is usually how the reel is taken care of .... or not. If the reel is not rinsed after fishing, or of it is dunked or lying in dirt, then that debris will accumulate in any grease or oil.

@@2ndChanceTackle that's what I was thinking. All people have opinions, I like to learn from the people who are in the business.

Why don't you grease both ends of worm gear??
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Год назад
The one side sits inside the drive and does not need grease. The teeth of that drive is oils when servicing the side plate
