Quick Tips Ep. 4: Fixing Common Ollie Problems a.k.a. How To Ollie Higher and Better
(I recorded this in February but right before I released it a few channels uploaded how to ollie higher videos so I decided to wait a little.)
Quick Tips isn't a how to series. It is meant to address specific issues not only with particular skate tricks but also with other areas of skateboarding knowledge.
This Quick Tips was geared a little more towards the beginner skater who is either working on their ollies or has just learned them and wants to try to improve them. I didn't want to give the same old "put your foot lower and pop harder" explanation that everyone else gives. A lot of concepts in skateboarding are easy to teach but there are also a lot that come down to straight muscle memory and experience. I tried my best to explain my thoughts on common ollie mistakes I've seen but when it comes down to it the best way to learn is to get out there and practice!
What do you guys think of this quick tips series? Is it helpful to go more indepth into certain aspects of a trick or is a regular trick tip good enough?
Good luck and have fun! :D
Thank you for watching!
P.S. 10,000 subscriber giveaway winner will be announced on Friday, the 20th of May.

For what is held to be skateboarding's most basic trick, whole books could be written on Advanced Ollie Theory. To get the feel for the ollie, it helps to really understand what it is you're trying to do, and how the weight of the board and inertia play a crucial part. Most tutorials heavily emphasise the back foot kicking down the tail hard, and then just say 'slide the front foot forward'. Aaron Kyro even recommends practicing the 'slide' separately for minutes on end. I'm not convinced this is useful, since when you do an actual ollie, you're going to have to do this 'slide' on a board that is quickly raising up, rather than staying at a 40 degree angle to the ground. I've always thought of the 'slide' more as a case of deliberately trying to 'grip' the rubber of my front shoe sole in the sweet spot (kind of in the pocket) and using whatever traction I can get to lever the board straight. This can take some time to master, but as far as timing goes, you're going to want to integrate a slight delay in this front foot action - indeed, trying to do a 'late' push can really help you get the feeling for this one. Basically, you need to snap your tail hard enough so that when the nose end of the board comes up, you can feel the pressure of the board pushing against the side of your front foot. All this in a slit second, naturally, but for me that's what makes a good ollie: popping the tail, waiting for the board to kind of 'snag' on my front foot, and only then sucking up my back foot and pushing out my front. Hope this is useful to someone.

Agreed. I wish I had seen this video before the Braille vids. The scraping your shoe up the board thing is a good illustration for how to level the board out, but it's a little like putting the cart before the horse. I tried that for weeks with little improvement before realizing that I had to get my front foot out of the way before anything else. Saw this vid and was doing better ollies within an hour. The Braille vids are great, but this one was much more helpful.
@kreep182
@kreep182 6 лет назад
Arno Theadorno yes I totally agree. Getting the ollie right is extremely important. I can do a sluggish ollie almost everytime, and rarely actually do a proper one. Thats just not gonna cut it for me cos I think ollies have to be done right in order to progress on to the next trick. I think the "sucking up the back foot" after you pop is extremely important like you have said. I am not an expert or anything, but I think this part in particular makes all the difference in the world. Also timing the pop is really difficult as well. This is the hardest part of all in my opinion. I am having alot of trouble popping the board right before I jump.

One thing these tutorials always miss is that jumping is important but sucking up your feet towards your body is more important. Watch a short guy that can dunk, his legs might be fully stretched out but three feet off the ground, his head is also three feet higher in the air. Watch a skateboarder ollie over something that is three feet high, his head will be a little higher in the air than it is when he is standing but his legs will be sucked upso that his knees are near his shoulders.

This is by far the greatest Ollie tutorial I have ever seen. I am 34 and getting back into skating. In the 90s the lesson I received was "pop the tail and slide your front foot." I never was able to Ollie more than 2 to 3 inches off the ground poorly. I just watched this held onto something and I was able to get almost as high as my board standing upright. I was actually scared because I had never been that high off the ground on my board. Thank you for all of your tutorials. I feel like I will actually be able to reach my goal of landing a kickflip and even set more goals. Your "impossible" tutorial actually makes me feel as if I will be able to do my favorite trick that I have ever seen. Honestly I saw Rodney I am a god Mullen do it in the Plan B video and I was smitten. I never thought that was a trick I would ever be able to do. Thank you for all that you do. You have given me hope that I will be able to have an actual bag of tricks.

Dude you seriously do an amazing job with explanations. Tutorials often gloss over subtleties that actually end up being the key to performing the maneuver. A lot of times it’s just a different way of looking at the problem or a different way of explaining it that gets it to click in someone else’s mind. That’s what you’re doing with your videos! Keep it up.

Henrik Bergström For me it was all about timing. I could pop the board up but my front foot just didn’t know when to push down. When I started to push down my feet were messed up and off the board. What you need to realize is that the second you feel a little pressure from the board onto your front foot you need to push down. Also getting really comfortable with throwing your board down and jumping onto it can be really helpful. Just building your balance is crucial to an ollie and really all of skateboarding. Hope this helps! Best wishes on boarding.

Literally the best ollie tutorial, people always just say (pop, drag, land) it's not that simple and there's so many key important steps that no one talks about (besides you) such as the jump, forward foot down motion, and a lot more. Amazing video

Hey man great vid. I need help with my ollies. I am able to do them consistently and with decent height. But whenever I Ollie my board always turns a bit frontside ( I ride goofy). I think this is due to my habit of swinging my right arm behind me whenever I Ollie. If I try to keep my arm straight and not swing my armbehind me this affects my Ollie and I can't get the same height.Do you have any tips on fixing this problem?
@johntoth9150
@johntoth9150 7 лет назад
I have this twist built in my ollies to. I found 1 my body is slightly "charged" with a twist which releases itself when i jump (try to "decharge" your body by turning it slightly before jumping - align your shoulders differently, left or right) 2 Kick your ollie straight! Don't allow it to turn for a long time while u watch it. 3 Watch the Tony Hawk video from sept 2016 where he shows how its done. best wishes!

Piont your shoulders like a hockey player doing a bodycheck in the direction you are ollying, this will make your feet paralel & straight, as well as shoulders, the spinning/turning problem shall hinder you no more...
@MariaGarcia-mz5et
@MariaGarcia-mz5et 7 лет назад
your shoulders should b parallel to your board that way u wont go fs
@darthskyblader9848

if shoulders are too forward you land on nose and slam into the pavement. A fine balence i guess, depends on how fast and the obstcale, must be feel?

Flux maybe it’s the timing like he mentioned. or maybe its that its not just a slam against the tail, it’s a pop then you move it up a little

I’m super comfortable on my board, it was just that I didn’t have any desire for tricks lmao. But at least it got me to get tricks quicker, so on the bright side, you should be rlly comfy on ur board :)))
