Great video, but the term for these shells is "welded" as I've heard the manufacturing was that the plastic halves of the shells were "welded" together using a device that heated up the seam, slightly melting them together. This was less problematic than using glue. Thanks for the good video. Others please note to be careful and use a lot of patience with the X-Acto knife so that you don't harm yourself (or the tape). If using the same shell again, yes, use Scotch tape. Using glue for plastic could outgas some and the fumes *might* damage the tape. Also, people should watch for the thin plastic slip sheets that allow the stack of tape to slide easily in the shell. Make sure to put those back in place if they fall out.

Yes, you're totally right about the word "welded". It actually dawned on me later that I shouldn't have said "glued". Thanks for watching!

Thank you, I never thought these cassettes without screws could come apart, it was actually fairly easy and all I used was a Utility knife (box cutter) with a new blade. I just repaired a Beatle tape which sounded excellent but the end of the tape came off the leader, I carefully cut some Scotch tape the right width which is all I have here, put it all back together and then the other end came off, haha! It is all set now. I haven't spliced tape for probably 50 years since I was a kid.

I find tape splicing is really not that hard, once you get the hang of it. It can be very rewarding!

Surprisingly I haven't had this problem with my 120 length tapes but I have a few pre-recorded cassettes I need to open and splice the leader back onto the tape.

I found that it varied. I definitely had at least 2 or 3 120 minute tapes that snapped. But I have others that never did.

Sadly I just dealt with a prerecorded tape (GoGo’s Beauty and the Beat from 81) where the splice came off. No surprise really after 40 years.

I would transplant the tape into a new shell. Not a fan of the welded tapes.
