The valves on the propane tanks have changed. You can open them without propane coming out if the valve is not faulty. To properly drain them you must hook up a section of the bbq hose to push on a valve inside to allow propane to flow and then leave it in a safe and well ventilated area to drain. Then you can remove the valve carefully (without your face or body over it) and slowly in case there is any pressure inside. Filling with water at the end is the best way to be 100 percent sure it is empty of any propane fumes.
@@jeffhayes2288 Yes it will. Just to be sure leave it upside down in cooler weather because the gas is heavier than air. That is not saying that the garbage man will take it. But if you are cutting it for any reason it is still better to fill it with water just in case. If you are making a portable air tank then go to it.
Just about blew a foo foo valve getting the top out of my 9kg bottle I made in to a forge. I ended up ratchet strapping the bottle to a tree and using a set of 36" stillsons as I couldn't get a grip on the valve with anything else. Never occurred to me to use an adjustable wrench on the lip of the valve! Will definitely give your method a try next time.
I've taken a look at some better methods and yes, remove the metal carrying handles with an angle grinder (after emptying the can). Then strap it down and actually a plumber's 2 inch wrench has worked better in my recent openings.
Evidently you aren't a follower of the smartest and most powerful man that walked this planet. The counsel doesn't come from a pair of sandals. The sandals are a pair of shoes that had protected millions of feet, having by itself better reputation than some men.
Wear stout footwear, then stamp on the pole attached to the spanner, a bit of shock works wonders. Assuming that the bottle was as near empty as possible flash over the opening with a blowtorch, you’ll get a small whoosh and know the gas is purged.
My buddy was welding on a fuel tank of a MIG-17 ...he filled it full of water! Somehow the darn thing still had vapors in it! It blew up! He wasn't hurt, but did need a change of underwear... The tank was toast!! It wasn't his first one either that he worked on. It was the only one that blew up!
I've done hundreds of those bottles, and one good smack with a heavy hammer sees them brass tops of,, obviously empty,, but there's always fumes in there, so the hose in the top sees of the remaining gas.
Really no way to get that valve off without trashing it since it's brass huh? A 24" or 36" would strip the outside....I guess unless you used a few sticks of hot glue on the jaws or something, but if you're using the tank for a project, no reason.
I took a 6" by 2.5" ID pipe and cut rectangles out of the edges to fit snuggly and now I can use pipe wrench on that. I can do about 6 to 10 tanks under a minute.
Sandals, short pants, I assume no safety glasses. Steel bar used to brace the steel tank when breaking valve loose. Steel wrench used to unscrew valve. A spark for whatever reason between the wrench and the valve and it's bad news. Standing over the tank when you were manually unscrewing the valve = wow. Any pressure in the tank at all and you're digging the valve out of your face. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I just worked for a propane distributor for 15 years.
Just open it all the way and flush it out really good with water so there is no lingering gas. You can leave the tank filled with water when you cut it if you want for extra precaution. Up to you, if you aren't sure about something, don't do it until you go read or ask someone.
A special sealant is used on the tank threads. I used a heat gun on medium heat for a while and this softens the sealant. The was done to replace the OPD which went bad. No issues since. This is the recommended method as far as I know.
I was holding my breath waiting for you to break the Cresent Wrench using it this way. All you have to do next time is just smack the valve with a good size hammer to pop it loose.
When they are recycled the recycling place will vent them slowly until empty. Of course this happens in the middle of nowhere and no smoking or sparks can be anywhere near. I did one and would vent for an hour then stop and when it was windy, then turn upside down because L.P. is heavier than air. Just be careful!
I Always Go to the fuel Station (Anonymus, with a Cap),and fix the Trigger from the LPG station.after that Run until you hear the Booom. Now Take a Marlboro and Turn the black Shirt and capy down.its done,Lil Bit loud but ITS Work really good.😂😂😂
I have been cutting them tanks open with torch plasma and grinder for years and all I have ever did was leave valve open till empty put flame to open valve then cut. il bet out of 20 tanks 3 of them had a small flame for a couple seconds.
As long as theyre empty theres not enough pressure to blow up.I've had a little flame shoot out of the cut I was making with a cut off wheel, but all it did was make a noise.
I am not sure why you ask if he has a voice. Video shows everything that is needed to get the idea, besides if he were talking you might have been tempted to say he talks to much, the video isn’t on the ability to talk or not talk.
Ok but you made a couple mistakes 1st Wear gloves. Propane can burn your fingers 2th Call any company who sells propane They have the right tools and will remove the valve for you Warning Be wise playing with propane is like playing with tnt
Always be careful when working with anything with gas. If you're not comfortable working with it, you shouldn't attempt this procedure. For this tank, I left the tank open for more than a week out in the woods away from everything, and then filled it with water through the valve. I didn't show this process, but there are plenty of ways to perform this safely. I wanted to show that anyone can do this with little to no tools. Everything I used could be found or bought at a dollar store or for less than $10 at a flee market. I'd recommend getting a belt clamp and pipe wrench and gas sniffer if you're going to do large quantities of gas tanks.
Doing this alone is fine but having someone holding the camera next to you is not right. You keep throwing heavy metal tools down to the ground as if you do not understand that they can strike rocks and make sparks. But even worse than that, you throw tool down toward a pile of other metal tools that are already on the ground. If you apply for a job at the gas companies, do not mention this video. It only takes one spark. I just opened and cut my first propane tank and did a much better job than you did. However I have no plan to post a video about it. My video will start at the point where you add water to the tank.
Actually that's brilliant to not say a word. Now no dumb ass can say well such and such told me how to do it and thats how I blew my eyeball out of my head and cauterize my eye socket with that there gosh darn tank.
