This is the true explanation. The Sea urchin is alive. It has a nervous system, but, it is not complex enough to feel pain or emotion. It tastes slightly buttery, and rich. The black stuff is a poisonous sac. This answers most of the questions. Thank you.
I really hate hypocrites and ignorant people who act like "oh my god, why do they eat that! Poor animal." When they brutally eat chicken nuggets and bacon without a second thought.
+DukesideoftheMOON well this is factual if you are into religion or the bible at all. the book of Leviticus tells us all about the food we are and are not allowed to eat. it helps guide us from the food that is good and the food that isnt. and sea urchins is not good for us humans because we are not allowed to eat bottom dwellers
+DukesideoftheMOON You got something against lobster, shrimp, clams, cod, flounder etc... too? Otherwise it's not really fair to target only sea urchins.
King Spooky Skeleton I want to try it but I know as soon as I get a chance to try it I will back out immediately but I love watching these vids for some reason
Fr it’s the sound of the shell and I just wanna eat the Shelly part. I get this with mr bean the movie when he eats that huge shrimp and the claws it looks so yummy but I know it’s inedible lol
Whenever I see a sea urchin, I think of that one scene from Surfs Up, where the urchin is complaining on live TV . "Stepped on me? THIS GUY WAS DANCING ON ME! Look at this - broken, gone, gone, broken, broken, broken..."
Well the reason why these things grow defenses is because they don't want to get eaten anymore. Like a cactus that wants to protect its water storage so cacti began growing pricks.
Geez even sea urchins arent safe from humans. Why would anybody want to eat those? ....why do we have to make everything into a food lol?....idk maybe its delicious just seems like to much of a pain in the ass . no offense to anybody else that enjoys these though.
Thanks for all the comments. = ) All comments welcome. Opening sea urchin in my opinion is the same as eating any type of seafood. They all need to die once before we can consume it right? People steam live seafood, boil live seafood, or smack a fish silly before cutting in, or fishermen freeze seafood right away when it comes out of the water. It's all the same. Seafood dies once we process it.
What most people do: Salvage all of the edible insides and throw everything else out. What I would do: Empty everything out of the middle (including the edible things, I don't have a taste for it), Cut off/sand the spikes so I can't get hurt, clean it, and use it as a bowl for chips.
i dont understand why people are saying that this is torturing the animal. EVERYONE eats animals. and how do you prepare it? by killing it. i just dont understand. people kill pigs, cows, squids, shrimp, dogs, cats. i can admit it is wrong to eat the animals the way we do, but people just do it. im not even sure if im making any sense but this isnt even torturing. if the person killing the animal was just killing it for fun, THEN thats called torturing. I JUST . UGH.
***** It's dead... who gives a fuck what people say... People say a lot of stupid shit. If the Urchin was alive the spikes would be moving. Well, they may barely be alive. But none the less, Urchins can not feel pain.
the very first person that ever try'd to eat one of these things, how desperately Starving was he/she to try and eat something like this. this is more work then its worth lol and 1 slip and your going to get poked
John Longneck Sea urchins cant feel pain, A sea urchin, like all other Echinoderms (ex. starfish, sea cucumber, sand dollar), does not have a central brain, but rather a single ring and nerves branching out from it. Its nervous system does not have any centralized processing as far as we can tell, and instead operates more or less like a diffuse nerve net.
BriBri Haze You do realize that the human brain evolved to its current state BECAUSE man started eating meat as a mainstay instead of plants, right? homo Sapiens would never have evolved into what we are now if we didn't eat meat.
+Audrey Roberto 1. They are "thorny af" on the outside. 2. If it tastes like 💩 and you know what it tastes like, you had to be curious to have eaten it some time or another . 3. Opinions are like buttholes, everybody has one but doesn't care to hear everyone else's.
+Melissa Jarnigan Not to mention that all raw seafood has a chance to cause stomach aches if you do not eat them often. A person that has never eaten raw fish won't have the proper enzymes or w/e in their stomachs to deal with it. After you've eaten it a good couple times, your body will have adapted and created them to deal with it. Also, depending on how careful the chief is, fish that isn't fully clean can cause some problems.
Lol these comments! Herbivores judging carnivores, carnivores judging herbivores. I'm just waiting for the cannibals to show up. That ought be an interesting convo.
I came across this video when I was like 7 and come back time to time as im seeing it all over tiktok and I just wanna eat the shell the sounds of the opening is lush
Let me get this straight. thousands of years ago Jeff- "hey bob, does that look good to you?" Bob- "What?" Jeff- "This sharp thing." Bob- "No." Jeff- 'I need this in my mouth A.S.A.P."
Top Three seafood that are my best choice to eat. They are; Sea Urchins (my #1), Sea Cucumbers (my #2), and last but not least the slipper lobsters (my #3). If I had my way I would eat them everyday. Jasmine C, man, the inside of that urchin is to die for, its meat was fat (A HEALTHY CHUBBY URCHIN). It just made my mouth watered-heading to the fish market today to get me some, I have not eaten urchin in a while. My style of eating them is to soak them in soy sauce mixed with lemon juice and hot pepper then have them with a bowl of steamy rice.
Hey I'll tell you a way of opening a sea urchin! Throw the spiky thing and a god damn wall. If that doesn't work do it again. And again.. And again....
They say "brave was the man who ate the first oyster" But braver was the man who ate the urchin, but boy was it worth it. Fresh uni is easily one of the top 3 seafood
umm afaik, sea urchin is a scarvenger, it help the sea cleaned by getting rid of garbage by eating it. eating it raw might tasty but remember you are eating a sea garbage e.g. fish poop, muds and dead fish. umm
well the thing is the yellow part (the only part you're suppose to eat) is the urchins "gonads". Its not actually its stomach/intestinal tract so you won't be eating any of the suspected things you've mentioned
Question: Is the shell in any way alive or neurally connected to the urchin or is it simply like and out protective shell detached from the urchin itself? Please no comments about me being stupid or ignorant on the matter i just simply don't know much about shellfish and urchins.
It is similar to a shell like on any arthropod (insects, crustaceans, etc.). The urchin does not feel anything. In fact, urchins are very primitive in terms of neural function (it's essentially non-existent) and it would be fair to say that the urchin does not feel anything that is happening to it and it DEFINITELY does not know it's being killed.
+Willow Bayonetta Jeanne Yes, you can. There are videos on how to remove the spikes and the black stuff then putting it in a bleach/water mixture making it a ornament. I don't understand why she didn't do that, if she wouldn't have wanted it she could've done it then sold it.
Tbh, uni sashimi is bomb diggidy af. We wanted to make sum at home but we only buy sum because 1, we cant find sea urchins. And 2, its hella spiky. Thanks for making the vid 😀
+Shmagala It's kinda hard to catch sarcasm when you are reading a comment. Unless someone clearly explains it (which did not happen here) it's almost impossible to notice sarcasm.
that's a waste you could use the shell. all you have to do is take the spikes off and soak it in bleach until it's all white then rinse well and you could use it as decoration. you could also use the teeth which is what she took out first. it isn't only for food don't waste such a creature just for the inside because u can do a lot more with the outside
+Kyle Conley well that really depends on what you watched parents eat as a small child doesnt it? i mean dogs think it's prefectly natural to eat kibble, there are people whos main source of protien is insects. it's cultural.
+Kyle Conley i'd say it is because there are some noobs at fishing, so when they really cannot catch even a flu, well, they see the poor sea urchin as their "worse could be not to eat"... so yeah... they're stuck with the sea urchin XD
+Kyle Conley I mean, why would you think that a fish looks like food in the first place?Only our culture makes use think that specific things "look like food". For instance, cow's milk, peanut butter, and tomatoes were all considered either a.) disgusting or b.) poisonous, and thus were not food, for several countries around the world.
I tried Uni sushi. The most difficult thing about eating this is trying to get past the smell of fresh sea water and the texture. You may have to keep eating this to get used to it, but when I tried it, I would inhale and there was an overwhelming smell of freshly caught salt water fish in my lungs. I would try it again. Maybe the experience would be different! Lol
Who saw this spikey volleyball in the ocean and thought "Hey, I should totally eat this rock with dozens of needles on it. It definitely can't be dangerous whatsoever"
