A Raw file dragged into Photoshop will, by default, open in the Camera Raw editor. When choosing Open, any changes that were made are burned into the image created in Photoshop. However, if Open As Object is chosen within the Camera Raw editor, a Smart Object containing a copy of the original Raw file is created within Photoshop. Double clicking on the Smart Object thumbnail within the Layers panel reopens the Camera Raw editor at any future point. Opening as a Smart Object allows for non-destructive edits to be made on original Raw file data.

Technically it is the associated xmp file that is loaded. Move the xmp (or delete it ) and the raw file will be as before. The raw file is unchanged - photoshop or lightroom just will load an xmp file of the same name if present.

Very true and great point. I wanted to keep this video simple so I glossed over the XMP file that you see appear on the desktop.
