How to operate a single engine inboard ski boat {No steering in reverse}

Single engine inboards can be one of the trickiest vessels to operate simply because you have no steering in reverse. This applies to small ski boats or big single engine trawlers. Traditionally these boats are standard rotation and will back to starboard (generally). It’s important to plan out all of your docking and close quarter situations with this in mind or else you can easily get yourself in trouble. Since the boat backs to starboard, the more you turn the wheel or rudder starboard, the quicker it backs starboard. However if you reverse with the wheel turned port it will counter that starboard motion and help the boat back straight. The more detailed you can be operating these types of vessels the more capable you’ll be in all situations.

On older skiboats, (1980's) the Mastercraft propeller turns one way, and on the Ski Nautique, the propeller turns in the other direction. I wonder if the new boat factories have all standardized turning in the same direction?

Some boats back in the day were reverse rotation for sure. Not common anymore unless it has twins.
