Brutha, Thanks sooo much for the G5120 tips...We just bought one and I thought the thing was never gonna be in tune. Your expertise has made me very happy and it was simple to do. We also have the Black Electromatic (Les Paul) too! I guess we're part of the Gretsch Family! Peace & Blessings to yoo & yours Bro!

Most Gretsch Guitars now come with posts to align and hold the bridge position. But the old floating bridge is still popular and in use today, especially with some Jazz players. It made sense when they came up with it 50+ years ago.

It is actually a great thing that the bridge isnt fixed, as it allows for intonating the guitar if you change string guage. Hollowbody instruments is a different animal, but they sound incredible! Nothing like a Gretsch.

My guitar teacher puts a strip of fine grit sandpaper under the bridge on his Gretsch guitars ... keeps them from moving pretty well.

I perceive this video to be more of a quick and dirty way to get the Guitar set up in an OK manner for OEM strings and not necessarily to fine tune the intonation for each string which most of us would certainly want to do. We learned that you take the foam strip out from under your bridge and put it back where it was. A couple of pieces of blue non-stick masting tape will mark the original location just fine. Big Ron

I own a Gretsch black penguin and I bought the modern gretsch space control bridge to replace the synchro sonic bridge. The result was really bad. My G strings was never on tune when I use to press a chord and as you don't have any saddles to move its impossible to correct tune. Then I bought the adjusto matic bridge and the result was even worst. Now my guitar was giving all the notes by pressing the 12 frett but the guitar went out of tune just by putting some chords. So I just put the Synchro sonic bridge again and the problem was solve. The message here is that all GRETSCH Bridges are very special. I set my Gretsch guitars very carefully and I take a lot of time to do it so. I also own a Masterbuilt with same synchro sonic bridge and it tunes perfectly so be aware of replacing bridges

I did it by lifting one end up and sliding out half the foam, because there's a gap in the wood half way, then putting it back down and lifting the other half and doing the same, then it's left exactly where it was (if you're careful). And when changing strings, change them one at a time, then the bridge can't move :) Obviously check to see if the intonations is ok afterwards.

Its a very good guitar for the money. Mine has a low action & is very easy to play. If I were a pro, I would want a higher end model, but the 5120 is a decent guitar.

@mailvilla both pickups have a volume knob. just roll down the neck a little and keep the bridge on full blast.
@keryadams

If you have a single string with bad intonation, you can move the individual saddles with a screwdriver. If it's all the way at the end of its range of motion and it's still off, you might conside moving the whole bridge and then adjusting the other 5 saddles. Since the climate is so different from the US to Australia, the guitar may need to bet set up on arrival. That is, the truss rod may need to be adjusted before it's optimally playable.

My advice to this would be; after intonating put small pieces of tape arond the edge of the bridge, remove the bridge and put 2 small pieces of doublesided tape at the ends and put the bridge back on. I'm not talking thick doublesided tape, but the kind you can get in hobbystores, or alternatively the kind that is used for photos. This will hold bridge enough in place not to ever slide. then remove the outside tape again and you'll have pefectly seated bridge without pinning it :-)

I heard using rosin also works to prevent the bridge from sliding around. I have not needed either technique so far.

well, you can either pin down the bridge (involves drilling, non reversible) or you can do as Brian Setzer did and use some electrical tape to tape it down (doesn't look too hot but it's more of a rock and roll solution).

@mjt11860 Sure, you can pin a mandolin bridge too. Don't do this to a valuable guitar or mando because you can de-value it to a future collector. Keep in mind that pinning a bridge affixes it semi-permanently. If you change string gauge later on, you may need to move the bridge foot a bit if the bridge saddles don't have the adjustment range you need to zero the intonation.

Brian, I purchased a used G2420T Streamliner with a fixed bridge. Strings are not over/under the Bigsby as I am sure you are aware. The guitar is in excellent condition but when I tune to pitch, low E to high E or opposite, all strings go up to sharp? I try again with the same continuous results. I also checked intonation. I installed new strings, one at a time with several winds but this will not stop? I presumed it might be the truss rod but it I cant imagine that causing an increased tension on the strings. I love this guitar but I am beginning to pull my hair out. I thought about going to a roller bridge as an option. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have one of these with the non fixed bridge and thought I'd pass along this info. I sanded the base of mine (bottom side) to better match the body contour and now it's so slick that it moves when I use the Bigsby or do bends. I marked the correct location for intonation by using masking tape on the corners of the bridge. Then I used thin double sided tape on the bottom to "fix" my bridge and all seems good now.

Um... I'm surprised no one has mentioned this... The stock G5120 comes with an Adjusto-Matic bridge. Can't you just set the bridge to the peaks on the F holes, tune the guitar, then adjust intonation on each string using the screws on the bridge? Isn't that what the screws are there for? Now if it were a bar bridge, it would be different....

Try intonating an Electromatic 12 string!!!!! The bridge is pinned, but clearly in the wrong position, I had to turn all the saddles around to get the thing barely in tune. I know they say, " You get what you pay for" but $800 is not exactly a cheapo for me. Considering all the the competition in this price range, Gretsch should re examine the Electromatic bridge
@incadove
@incadove 7 лет назад
A lot of the models have that rattling bridge problem. Gretsch should also make every model come with a jack plate installed. It's highly unlikely of course due to the fact that Fender owns Gretsch and Fender Jaguars have always had that shitty bridge that most people swap for a Mustang bridge.

Intonation points depend on how heavy the strings are. If your guitar was built for 10s and you put in 11s, then expect the intonation to shift off the center of the bridge.

You can get a g5120 used for around $350-450. For a beginner guitar it's not that steep of a price comparatively to a New beginner guitar that will be of a lower quality. New a g5120 with be looking at around 650-750. Now they have be replaced with a G5420. All better guitar IMO but new run around $800. If you want a new gretsch hollowbody, the new Streamliner series is between $450(550 if you want the waggle stick). That being said, the streamliners have a more traditional style pickup and thus will not have as much as "That Great Gretsch sound" as say a more pricey G5420 or G6130. Still a great guitar though either way.

I'm a complete amateur and I just got a G5420TG Snowcrest White last night new for just under $800 and I love it. The tone and sound is like no other guitar. I tuned it up once before bedtime played it this morning and it's staying in tune perfectly. Next up will be the Billy Duffy Model ;). Intonation is already good so I didn't have to worry about that. If budget is an issue pickup a used g5120 as Nathan said and see if you like it? I have 7 different guitars ranging from and Ibanez JS1200, Epi Les Paul Standard Pro, Fernandes Dragonly, etc, and I'm really enjoying my new Gretsch A LOT! Don't let your level of playing stop you from getting what you want and can afford. Every guitar has it's own sound and every model has certain traits both good and bad. Expand your sound :).

hey couple of quick questions, i have the g5129 and when your adjusting the intonation its easy to just move the bridge with your hands going into this will this effect tuning stability being its so easy to move the bridge? im having horrible tuning issues it just wont stay in tune im thinking cause its the bridge moving? would tapeing the bridge down hold it? or heavier strings like 11-52s? any tips ?

@thehyperchondriac tape it down :P... not the most pratical solution but you can proably hide a lil piece of tape under so it stays absolutely still... or as my friend taught me... replace one string a a time there the bridge stays and nothing moves :D

@thebeerbaron666 Sometimes they will..but a lot of the chains(G.C.,S.A.) have kids that have no clue as to what they're doing.Besides,with a moveable bridge it could get knocked out while being hauled around in it's case.,so it's probably a very good idea to know how to do it.
