Organizing seed packets helps with garden planning and efficient planting. Organizing garden seeds is necessary for gardeners with many seed packets and can be beneficial for gardeners with just a few seeds. Gardener Scott demonstrates and discusses a number of different ways to organize garden seeds. (Video#127)

I like this video because over the years I've collected seeds in so many containers. I have some in folded up paper towels, sandwich bags, envelopes...even some I still have on coffee filters (from collection of seed) that need to be stored. I have a Dollar Store Fabric Box hat I have quickly out grown. So I have little stashes of seeds everywhere. And that is no way to be organized! I couldn't find some seeds at all last year. I have them now. And I also have a collection of empty seed packets that did well for me, that I'd like to grow again. I love collecting seeds! Now I need to get organized! You gave me some really good ideas! Thank you!

I use binders as well. Found 4 pocket and larger 2 pocket clear plastic inserts on Amazon. The 4 pocket inserts are perfect for standard seed packets. and the larger 2 pocket inserts work great for over sized, such as seed collection packets. I use 2 1 1/2 inch binders. One for cool season and the other for warm season seeds.

Another advantage for the platic boxes, either simple ones or photo saving type, I believe is that you can add silica pouches to keep the moisture at bay. I save those pouches from shoe boxes or other things I buy, but since last year, I have a few 3D printers, and, because the plastic filaments need to be kept dry, I purchased silica beads in bulk. They change blue in color as they absorb moisture, and, if they become saturated, I can put them in the oven until they dry out and become orange again

LOL I've had every problem you described, plus one more. Rats got in and ate some seeds, and others they took the whole bag / packet, chewed it up, and then buried it in an unsed tree pot. Went to reuse the dirt as a seed starter, and got all kinds of things sprouting up! I once had the small plastic box you started with, with small mail envelopes, with the latin name at the top corner, all alphabetically organized. Great for archiving 200 common and rare seed packets, bad for planning a garden. Switched to boxes, also forgot / lost / dropped / spilled seeds constantly. Finally settled on plastic drawers based on purpose categories. Small flat-file drawers for herbs, squash, lettuce, brassicas, melons, witch's garden, ornamentals, misc, and a "what to plant next", and large set of drawers for survival bulk seeds like beans, cereals, and bulk root vegetables. The rare / unusual seed archive still stays in the latin labeled envelopes in the plastic boxes, but the common active garden seed goes in the easy drawers. So much better.

I repurposed a large binder and am organizing my seeds in trading card pocket sheets. I have a small basswood box with a magnetic closure that I’m using for my bulkier packets. They’re currently organized by Edible/Fruiting, Herb, and Ornamental, and the edibles will eventually be sorted into Cool Weather and Warm Weather crops. I have a spreadsheet to keep my planting info on, so I’ll be able to easily refer back to it without dragging a bunch of seeds packets out.

I use a plastic pocket file for monthly checks. It has 12 tabs. For example, I use one file for tomatoes, one for squash, one for peppers, etc. I have an extra refrigerator so I store the seed files in the vegetable bin. The seeds will last much longer if kept cold.

I love your custom cardboard trays for seeds. I use recycled Amazon boxes for storage because they are consistent sizes that stack very neatly. One idea: instead of tape for the dividers, I have an idea for a more "solid" solution. Cut the dividers 2" too long, and bend a flap on each end. Use some simple white glue, and a few clothespins as clamps. I bet the box would last YEARS... instead of worrying about the tape failing. You Must label them clearly, so, like you mention, they don't get lost. BUT!!!! We now have a plastic system like you show at 13:00... so it's a thought experiment, I guess!

My word, how many seed packets! And I thought I'd been binge-buying when I brought home twelve packets one day, hahah. I don't have more than thirty or forty, so I keep them all in one box and there's no danger of misplacing it or forgetting about it. I use a cardboard box, as I'm trying to reduce on plastic whenever I can. I store them by starting month, whether they are bought or picked by myself. So each month I can go and look what I have available for sowing and do those.

I use the plastic tote with smaller bins that you showed. I number by beds and then number the smaller compartments so they are organized by what goes in which bed. I like the idea of organizing by planting timing, maybe I’ll combine the two ideas. Some beds get multiple plantings over the season.. I probably need another tote! So many seeds this year!

My seed storage involves 5 separate plastic latch totes such as the one you showed, but they are the width and height of a large seed package plus about 5 inches long. Each mini tote is transparent have a different colour as accent and I separate packages inside with vertical index cards with seed type. Add a desiccant (especially at the end of the season for saved seeds) and you have a flexible, inexpensive and portable seed organization system.

that big plastic bin with separate storage containers looks really great!! This year I upgraded from a small cardboard box to three pretty storage boxes (the ones you can find at Michael's Crafts and JoAnn Fabrics) - one for veggies (a large one), one for herbs and one for flowers. I usually organize in the order of sowing front to back (from earliest sow dates to latest, starting with stuff like peppers and tomatoes that need to be started indoors, then peas and radish for outdoors, etc.), with a small divider for what's already been sown. And I also keep empty packets for reference and to remember to order more for next season. I appreciate that you reply to comments! Especially since you've been doing RU-vid for so long and you still take the time to respond. I don't have any gardener friends, so it feels extra special to be able to connect with people who are passionate about gardening!

I am going to integrate my garden with some flowers as well, to bring the bees and butterflies into the garden (or rather, give them more incentive to pollinate my garden) so I am going to separate my garden and flower seeds from my flowerbed seeds, and further break them down by time to plant/start seedlings.

I had previously used some wooden recipe-card-style boxes, but I neglected to give them a waterproof finish and they got really weathered when I had them outdoors with me in the garden. I then switched to some plastic containers that are often marketed for storing and pouring bird seed. The shape is not ideal, but the handles enable me to easily carry in one hand when taking garden tools inside or outside and they aren't going to let water in or blow away when outside. I like the custom cardboard box for storage. It would be possible, if one wishes, to dress it up with some paint or decoupage. Mod Podge would add some strength and water resistance.

1 plastic shoebox, six cardboard dividers labeled: spring seed start indoors, spring direct sow, summer seed start indoors, summer direct sow, herbs, and flowers. ("Seed start indoors" is indicated by a little house icon.) Alpha by veg name within those categories, and tomato varieties are alphabetized within tomatoes. I also have a 4 x 6 index card at the front with my key for seed starting indoors in there, with just four dates and what I start on those dates. Compared to a lot of youtube gardeners, I don't overbuy seeds. Compared to "normal" people, I guess I do because when I told a neighbor I'd "only" ordered 18 seed packets online this year, I got a very strange look. lol. I won't mention to her the 20 or so packets I'll grab at the store.

I organize my seeds by planting dates and keep it in a simple plastic container, similar to the one in your video. I use poly plastic check/coupon sorters which have 6-12 dividers. I get mine at the dollar store and label the top of each using permanent, metallic markers (Indoor Start, Early Start, Herbs, etc.). 2 seed packets can fit upright side-by-side in the larger pockets. In shorter pockets, I lay seed packets on their side with the tops of different varieties alternating on the left and right (older but viable seeds in front so I use them first). I run the veg garden for our church food pantry so I can just grab the pockets with seeds we’re planting today instead of dragging a big box every time. The plastic pockets also keep the seeds dry.

I have a huge binder so it can hold a lot of pages, organize them by leafy greens, tomatoes, peppers, herbs. It doesn't really work for corn or beans / peas though since they are too bulky... The inserts I have are kind of like ones you would use to collect cards except the squares are slightly larger. Pretty nice and I can put seeds on both ends of the sleeves. I also have regular paper dividers I might put in soon, but I already have everything all in sections so I probably won't need those. The paper dividers have the squares at the ends so I could write tomato or greens on them and flip right to them ( Hard to do with the amount of pages I have though ) I keep old seed packets for reference if something from the previous year pops up from fallen seeds.

I have about 10 times amount of seeds each year) I use rubber band to keep them in small groups like: flowers to sow in plugs, flowers to sow in soil (also can break that by hight), early/late greens, summer greens, zuccinis/pumpkins and squashes, tomatos, aubergines, peppers, rootvegetables. Then i put them in bigger groups into open plastic containers: flowers, roots, solanaceous, cucurbitas, green. And then I put them into bigger plastic container that seals. Its easy to find what you need, you know when to plant what, and you can pick on group of plants, sow, and put them right back, no need to put them again alphabetically or smth. ok...well I may have gone overboard but most of my seeds are not actually in packets as I save and buy in bulk. I saw your last idea in another video and decided I had to have these - thankfully the price just keeps going down (at least at Michael's) as these started out at over $40 per case and I now have FOUR - yes 4 and may need more next year. I sort mine by type of plant because I sow multiple sets of each and have two cool weather seasons here in Utah at 6000'

My organization system is not as fancy as yours. The seed packets are dropped into large Ziploc bags -- one for each type -- and are filed alphabetically (Amaranth, Asparagus, Basil, Beans, Beets, Cauliflower, Corn, etc). Oldest packet is in the front of the Ziploc and the most recent is in back -- FIFO. All of the Ziplocs are stored in a plastic tub to keep out moisture and rodents. When I get to squash (Cucurbit), however, I have so many seeds from previous grow-outs that they get broken out into their own tub and are separated according to species (Maxima, Mixta, Moschata, and Pepo); as well as individual varieties. I keep a LOT of excess squash seeds because I: 1) share them with new gardeners and 2) use them at swap meets. It may not be pretty, but the system has served me well for the past ten+ years. You are absolutely correct about needing some form of organization. I agree; use the one that works best for you! Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA.

Am LOVING the new container idea w/individual bins inside. Am thinking of getting a 2-pack, and labeling them each with a week during the entire growing season, including fall/winter sowings. When I start a seed in the mudroom, I'll mark the packet with MUD and re-file the packet in the week's bin showing when it should go out into the dirt garden. Great!

Here's a question for ya. Have you talked at all about any benefits of garden layouts taking in consideration the track of the sun overhead. i.e. E-W track vs N-S. Or does it really matter for the sun to hit both sides of the plant for best growth. Thanks.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 года назад
I have discussed that in some of my garden design videos. Much depends on the height of plants and where they're placed in the beds. I encourage narrow beds to be oriented north-south. As the sun tracks it hits the entire bed relatively evenly over the course of a day. In most home vegetable gardens there won't be a noticeable difference during peak season.

I use the small totes like you have but have small cardboard boxes inside to separate the seeds. I then rubber band the like seeds together and put like seeds in the totes and label the totes as to what seeds I have in them. I have a separate tote that I put the seeds I have to start inside into. I bought the photo case but found I have too many of some varieties to fit in the individual cases. I love that system though.

Some great ideas there thank you. I'm going to go with trying the binder since I already have one with sleeves ready to go. My question is where do I store my seeds? Here in Sydney the summer time temperature can be hot. Several days this summer alone in excess of 43C (110F). Should I be protecting my seeds from the heat?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 года назад
I'll do a video on storing later, but the key is finding a cool, dark, dry location. You should protect from heat if you want the seeds to remain viable for a long time. A refrigerator can be the perfect spot for seeds.

I'm recycling 3 large Costco spinach containers which are the size of a shoe box. I have cut up some cardboard as dividers for each seed type and they are in alphabetical order. The only down side is what to do with the bags of seeds I have saved, these are too bulky to go into this system.

Could you talk about old seeds, last year seeds and seeds so old you can't remember when? For home gardens a seed pack is a bit of a nightmare of too many seeds. I might need 3 plants yet if I try to buy starts I'm limited to a very small selection, then I feel guilty about my seed hoard. If you already talked about this then please drop me the link, navigating through the vlogs is not so easy.

Great Ideas! I'm opting for the plastic container. Quick question, my husband always stores his seeds in a gallon freezer bag in the freezer! Is this necessary? Thanks again.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 года назад
Thanks! Storing seeds often depends on when you plan to sow them. Storing in a freezer can be good for long-term storage, but if you're going to use them in your garden in the next season, keeping them in the refrigerator or in a cool closet would be fine. Of course, as long as they are dry and you have plenty of room in your freezer (and it makes your husband happy), the freezer works too.
