How to Organize Prismacolor Pencils [Best Color Order]

I am frequently asked how to organize Prismacolor pencils. Do I organize them based on the color order found on the box of the Prismacolor Premier 150 Colored Pencil set? Or do I have my own Prismacolor order system? Well, as you can probably guess, I have my own system that I am happy to share with you.
I find that organizing my Prismacolor pencils helps me not only find the colors I am looking for more quickly, but I also get more use out of them.
Is my order the best way to organize Prismacolor pencils? For me, yes. But you may like something different. So watch the video to see if you would like to organize your Prismacolor colored pencils the same way I do.

I love your cheery tone and attitude, I had an accident and am blind in one eye and can barely see out of 2nd eye, however with your rule of thirds & other techniques I am able to color at least sitting healing, thank you so much for making these videos, they are as good as the actual coloring oh, well not quite but you've taught me a lot LOL

I would love to see how you organize your other pencils. Would you consider coming up with a book that would show not only the three pencils within the same color family that blend together but other color combinations? I know not only myself but a ton of other people are always looking for color combinations in their coloring. This would be great!!!

It must have taken you years to know how to make all of those tritone combos. I took the time to organize mine by color wheel because I didnt have that chart on the box like yours, but if I had a better system, I would use that instead. Many of the colors in the 150 box of Prismacolor intrigue me but I have no idea what to use them with. I am fascinated with your system!

I love mine too! This was the first set I purchased. I have since bought Polychromos and Luminance for commission work, but I use my Prismacolor for practice, trying a commission work (blending colors) before I start the piece. They are sensitive. Besides the creamy soft core, they also don't have a protective barrel over the end (could have something to do with why they break(??). I wish they were lightfast...can't really rely on the color lasting on a piece I sell. Such a bummer because their color spectrum is unmatched!

Do any of your pencils end up in more than one spot? So for instance in the tritones and also in the skin tones section? Or is this only your 150 each pencil goes in one spot?

Yes they do! When that happens, I leave the pencil in the group where it gets used the most and then in the other section, I leave a little note to myself so I know where to go find it. Great question!

Great informative video, I would love to see more tips and tricks, I’m new to this hobby and am loving it....just had a nearly month long evacuation from Hurricane Laura Cat 4 and coloring helped keep me as sane and relaxed as possible. We are just getting back and it looks like a war zone. I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. We are now all working to repair and get things livable again. Love seeing different organization techniques. I think I'm going to take my second 150 set and pull your tri-blend combos out for a separate case. I'm too set in my ways with how I organize my current set that I can't change it. For my most used pencils, I barely have to look where they are. I just grab. *lol* I once heard the Verithin pencils being described as being for outlines and detail work, not for general coloring. It's similar to the Derwent Studio pencils where the hardness allows you to get sharp lines/details because the tip doesn't break so easily. My problem is: I forget to use them. Thanks for sharing!

Another awesome video about our favorite brand of pencils. I appreciate all the work you do for us, Jen. Do you have some workshops in the Color Bliss partner groups for using grey pencils? I have found I am not using mine much but I really don't know what to do with them other than shading. I did a mermaid using them recently to practice a technique I saw, laying down the grey and then the color on top that that was fun but I assume there is so much more?

Hi Jennifer and Steve , I have had a full case with my Black Widows . I organized them in the sets and case is full . Now I ordered a 160 pencil slot case to house the Monarch along with them . I have been wondering if I should put them in sets of 3 or all reds with reds , blue with blues etc ? Just curious how you store yours and what your swatch chart for all 144 Black Widows is like ? Just found your channel. I have a love hate relationship with prisma. I have a older 150 set from 7 years ago. I have several that keep breaking especially the greens and reds. The ones I use the most. They are great for a while then when I go to sharpen mid way they break and break. And then I stop colouring all together,😢 I give up for the frustration. I love sharp points but they don’t stay like that for long. I wish they were unbreakable and always stayed sharp. 😂❤

I need to make a frequently used pencils section. I have a 160 pencil case I haven’t filled yet. 48 Prismas, 30(?) Polychromos, 23 Prisma scholars, then...crayolas? I don’t have enough pencils to fill the case, lol. Will have sketch/graphite section. Maybe even watercolor pencils section. Who knows.

Yes! Something must be up with the way the pigment and the binder work together on the Tuscan Red. It’s one of my favorite colors but I’m on like my third pencil since keeps breaking. One time when I put the pencil to the paper it just disintegrated and I wasn’t even pressing hard.

Would you consider doing a video and maybe even a tri tone set on creyart colored pencils?? They are an awesome, creamy, and vibrantly colored set of 120 pencils, available on Amazon for only $29.95… That is their regular price too!! They are even creamier than Prisma scholars, but not quite as creamy as Prisma premieres!!

I have 150 set of PC but I recently bought a 520 brutfuner set and I need to swatch them. I didn’t know if I should start with reds then go into oranges but there’s so many I just know I wanna keep all the reds together and yellows on the swatch sheet.

Great videos thank you 🙏. My local office supply store had prisma premier on sale for 150 set. So I got them. I was a year into colouring. I only wanted to use water colour at that time. I have broken that fixation with Prisma because it appeared to be a favourite of most colourists and used in most colour alongs and used by almost every RU-vid colourist. It has been a year since this video. Do you still like prisma over most of the other brands? As far as I can tell it’s Prisma or the extremely expensive brands.

Hi Jennifer, love how you store and organise your pencils .. I would love to try the prisma pencils .. hopefully one day I can purchase them .. I have the small set of polychromos which I was bought for my birthday and the small set of inktense too .. I did purchase the castle pencils myself which I was told was good but I’m on the fence just getting back into colouring and I have been binge watching your Chanel to learn more and learn how to blend better and get a more even look … also I don’t know how true it is but I was told if you put your broken pencils in a bit of tin foil and wrap the pencil then put it in the oven for about 10 to 15 mins then take it out and leave on the side for an hour it fixes the broken cores as the heat helps melt them together again … have you heared this or tried this tysmfs sweetie 🥰

My Tuscan Red is a problem, I've had several and the color comes out of the pencil - I had to put a piece of tape on the bottom to keep it in.

Trouble with pencils? YES!!! Chartreuse, black, white, cream, canary yellow, lemon yellow, mineral orange, mahogany red, chocolate, espresso. There may be others. I started with 36 ct.; added150 ct. last week. I have only used a few of the 150 ct., and 4 of those lost lead more than once with initial sharpening. Ugh! How do you cope? Any way to get replacements easily?

I wish youd think about selling your color combination that are already colored like in your binder you showed us, i only been painting for three years im lear3so much infomation i feel like my brain will melt from all my info im supposed to hold thats why i like to color cause its z bit more relaxed and im learning more color comb5but my color scheme never looks at good as the videos i watch, if you put together your precolor that you swatch out i know id buy it and i think it would most like be a hot item for your business, thanks for this video..ive been looking at the global pencil cases but you could you yell me the size you used in this video as i know global cases run in four sizes....this video helped me greatly...hin hint sell preswatched colors you did ...lol..mikelle art mom🎨✍👩‍🎨

My problematic Prisma pencil is Chartreuse. I have two sets of the pencils and that color has serious self-destructive tendencies. No matter which sharpener I try, the core crumbles and breaks on me. I now have two chartreuse colored pencil nubbins that I... out of my need for a complete set, stay with their normal-sized brothers and sisters! 😭

might I suggest if your having trouble with any pencils, use a rotary sharpener personally I use a jakar hand crank and electric sharpener, I love them theybe never failed me problem with standard sharpeners is they can and do twist the lead leading to snapping, rotary sharpeners rotate round them causing alot less breakages, I've only had 1 pencil be a problem but ive used both with both woodless (damn near impossible to sharpen unless yu use a rotary) and wooded plus they give a very long point

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a Carl rotary helix sharpener that works well but it is sooo aggressive and removes sooo much product. I may need to try another brand.

@@ColoringBliss I do suggest jakar, ive replaced the blade once in I think 5 years and thats even with the sharpening of woodless and I'm sure you know how hard they are to sharpen, although woodless are better sharpened in the electric jakar as it does need to grip they do tend to sharpen to a point well and don't tend to over sharpen (from my experience and I've used palamino blackwing with this(we all know how pricey they can be)) in these so you might like them if you do decide to check them out it might be good to see a video on your opinions of them

I just got my first 150 set and the spring green & Tuscan red were already damaged. I tried to sharpen the spring green and it looks terrible.. I’m scared to sharpen the Tuscan red as it’s so pretty!

Can you help I can't afford the full sets of polychromos or Prismacolours which colours from each set would be nice to buy as single stock to complement other brands eg Arteza and Castle Arts Where in the UK can I get open stock Prismacolours I can get polychromos just can't find a supplier for Prismacolours any advice much appreciated

I had the same problem with some of mine so I contacted the company and they sent replacements. Those had cracks also! I asked why they sent cracked pencils, but they never responded. I was to return my original cracked pencils, but I never did.

them and they couldnt or wouldnt give me a reason for the cracking. They wanted me to return my set and then they would send me a new set. I told them to send me my replacements for the second time along with a prepaid label and I would return them at that time. I ended up talking to a supervisor. I was able to get it resolved at this point Let's just see if I get a quality replacement. I was also missing 14 pencils. I had several where the colors were doubled and one which had 3 of the same color. I also had 2 pencils that were sharpened down about 1/4 of the pencil and the points were like they had been used to write with. Very disappointed.
